A friendly 1911 thread.
Post your 1911s, discuss 1911s, talk about the parts inside of it, if you fit them yourself or not, make judgments about the personality of other 1911 owners, etc.

Posting one of mine. SA Mil-spec with Harrison ignition and Ed Brown trigger and other shit. Got it as a project gun to learn how to fit parts. Fuck, filing the safety was a pain.
>>
>>33264257
Neat, 1911 thread. Building mine from a Sarco dual-serrated parts kit and a Fusion frame, probably going to swap in a Wilson spring kit, extractor, and magazine, and a Fusion K-hole trigger.

Any tips going into this build on how to do it right? Critical areas that need work, etc. Barrel is pre-throated but I will polish the hell out of the feed ramp.
>>
>>33264274
>Sarco
My nigga. I back ordered a parts kit and a few days later, they charged my card and didn't tell me what was going on. Was gonna call them and ask what the fuck when FedEx rang the doorbell and handed me a box of parts.

Working on an 80% frame from Stealth arms, gonna Cerakote it black to match the parts kit. Already got a couple Wilson mags since I wasn't impressed with the one that came from Sarco.
>>
>>33264373
Nice. Been thinking of doing an 80% frame but I'm not sure I can do a good job without heavier equipment - currently have a Foredom flex-shaft grinder that accepts up to 1/4" inserts as well as some hand tools. I have a drill press, but I wouldn't trust it for anything precise.
>>
>>33264373
is that what the finish on those sarco kits is? thought it was phosphated

Oh snap. I like this thread I've been looking at sarco for my first foray into builds. Want to make a officer/lda style. Would a regular 80% jig work or would I need a special one.
>>
>>33264393
Did the hammer and dear pin holes with a Harbor Freight press and vice, the real touchy part was counter sinking the left side. The slide rails and barrel seat were basically whittling with the fancy jig.
>>
>>33264274
>Building mine from a Sarco

The Sarco part kits are dogshit. I had a frame and slide, put it together with a Sarco kit, and the ejector bent at 90 degrees first round. Replaced that, and the gun wouldn't cycle due to weak springs. I threw the Sarco crap away and used Brownells and Wilson parts.
>>
>>33264414
No, Sarco kits aren't Cerakote, but they are black. If I'm satisfied with the frame, I'll probably do the slide. Haven't Cerakoted before so this whole thing is an experiment.
>>
Just bought an ATI GI 1911 for $390 new. Awesome. Only put 70 rounds through it but no issues so far. First 1911, I dig it. Big piece of lead going downrange and IMO easier to shoot than polymer 9mms.

Got this one awhile back.
After a few months i figured out somebody had half-ass converted the internals from series 80 to series 70.
I bought the correct spacer kit and finished the job properly.
It ran fine before but now its seems a little smoother. Never have any problems with it.
Fun as hell to shoot.

I'm thinking really hard whether or not this year is the year I buy a wilson combat.
Wanting to get an x-tac model, something like pic related.
I thought I'd be happy with my series 80 Colt but since I rented a Nighthawk GRP I have been a broken and distracted man.

I know how you feel, after fitting some shit, I realized that I need more, and I want more things to fiddle with. It's consuming all that I am and it hurts my bank account.

>>33265039
>scratches on delta ring from RAS
sounds about right. Mine has those too.
>>
>>33265069
Sounds like its time to build one from blanks, then. Go get yourself some bare parts and build a masterpiece.

Doing something as relatively simply as tuning your extractor or fitting an oversize firing pin stop is so satisfying.
Old Slabsides is a tinkerer's gun.
>>
>>33265136
Just hand-file and scrape a gun from bar stock.
It would be so sad, living as a hermit going mad over the perfect 1911. Sad, but in a poetic sort of way.
>>
>>33265187
I could see a Japanese guy doing that, and a documentary getting made over it.
>>
>>33265187
My buddy says this will happen to me, I am obsessive over the most minute details of the 1911.
The current story is I'd have the frame forged from the blade of the spear of destiny and the grips made from George Washington's wood teeth.
>The gun would be put into a random rest and tested for accuracy.
>The group would be 0.46 inch wide at 100 yards.
"PIECE OF SHIT!"
>proceed to chuck 1911 into nearest volcano

I really wish they'd bring back the GI model, A1 parts on a gun with angled slide serrations just pisses me off.

Sorry, couldn't contain my aspergers, hope you end up liking yours though.
>>
Just bought a Springfield Milspec just cause, but know I'm left with a question?

How long does the mainspring last on these things?
>>
>>33265405
The hilarious part of all this is my bro is not far off from describing my actual standards.
Lots of brand new 1911s need to be heavily lubricated and run with standard power ammo during a break in period.
I had a couple failures to feed within the first 500 rounds from my brand new and definitely under lubricated Colt series 80 full size shooting Winchester white box.
I wanted to throw the damn gun.
Stupidity? Autism? Probably both, to be honest.
>>
>>33265476
>Having high standards means that you are autistic.
But seriously, I can understand the feeling of getting angry at a malfunctioning piece of equipment.
>>
>>33265432
Forever, really. Replace it every few thousand rounds.
>>
>tfw fitted a new trigger and filed your safety to fit.
>tfw there is this nagging itch in your mind that you somehow fucked it up even though you did it by the book you think
>keep doing safety checks and listening for the click in the hammer
>tfw you keep thinking you hear it.
Help me friends. I can't do anything right.
>>
>>33265183
This so much. This is why I love the 1911. I do a lot of tinkering (film, guns, cars), and that's what drew me to the 1911.
Abandoned Glock and haven't looked back.
>>
>>33265041
Decide if your eventually gonna buy one.

If yes, then understand that the sooner you buy it the longer you'll enjoy it.

My shitty looking Kimber. It's been holstered over nine thousand times, been thinking about paying to get it recoated because it looks like hell. Fabulous gun though, it's smoother and more reliable than anything else I've owned.

My SFA range officer has served me well over the years
>>
>>33265406

I wish so as well. I had one of the GI models but sold it in a time of need. It liked to bite me bloody so probably for the best.

Just bought a Colt series 70 level II for the Pony, beavertail, and most of all the vertical serrations.

I will not own a 1911 with angled serrations. Looks like low class trash.
>>
>>33266014
I wouldn't get it refinished, it looks really nice all worn and such. Was it a leather holster that wore it down? I want mine to eventually look like that.
>>
>>33266036
I just got one. You replace the sights on yours? I kinda hate them.

Agree with the other poster, that worn finish looks great. /K/ beats up on Kimbers, but I'm quite happy with my Custom Carry II.
>>
>>33266232
I got it used, from a trade. So I'm really not sure what its early life entailed. I do know it has about 2k rounds through it though, 1k of which I've put through it myself and judging by the wear I'm assuming it was an EDC for a long time. I've been agonizing over getting it refinished for a while because it's currently my EDC and I know I'm going to scratch it up again eventually.
>>
Are AO 1911s any good? I just want a basic ww2 type 1911 to use as a woods gun
>>

You're better off with a Rock Island if you want a m1911a1 clone on the cheap.
Of all the more budget brand 1911s Rock Island seems to have a good reputation for making them run.

>spends an extra minute forcing recoil plug back into hole before twisting barrel bushing into place
What a thrill. What grips do I get for an M1911? Mine came with Hogue rubber grips, are there any better?

I love my Remington R1 Enhanced. 1,500+ rounds through it and have only had two malfunctions, both of which occurred when I accidentally loaded 2 9mm rounds in to a magazine. Giun fired fine but the casing expanded in the barrel and jammed. Had to use a cleaning rod to get it out. Zero damage to the gun, but sure made me start being more careful about separating my ammo.

Hey guys, I recently won an STI spartan .45, I was wondering if anybody could tell me what I can except for my first entry to the 1911 world.
>>
>>33268225
A good, functional gun, that if you have any modicum of a tinkerer in you, a rabbit hole of fun and hell
>>
Other than replacing the recoil spring every 2k rounds, is the extractor the only other thing that needs regular looking after? Is tuning the extractor really fiddly or is it not a big deal?
>>
>>33268500
Do an extractor test ever thousand or so rounds. Generally the extractor once tuned isn't so finicky, but don't quote me on that.
>>
$1500 budget. Dan Wesson or Colt? Rail or no rail? Something else altogether?
>>
>>33268563
I like Dan Wesson.
Do you plan on using the rail at all? If not, don't bother with it.
>>
>>33268586
I like the way the Dan Wesson Valor looks. I wouldn't mind a rail but then holsters are going to be a pain and it's going to look gross without a light at all times

Yeah, I think you've got it figured out pretty much. Valors are awesome guns
