Has there ever been a successful vigilante?
Ever? In the 10,000 year history of humanity, has there at least been one?

What is successful? What is a vigilante?
If you're just talking about people who broke the law while doing something for their own perceived ethical good, then not getting caught, then there's probably been millions. Tens of millions.
Has a vigilante successfully quelled crime in their area?

Then yes. If you look at the community defence groups in Mexico, some are successful, many are not, it just depends if it's worth retaliation by the cartels or not.
A smart vigilante will help the criminals not lose face, and give them a viable alternative.
This is also the case in a few anti-poaching groups, where they give the poachers the opportunity to work in national parks instead. Gives them an alternative, and the alternative is often better paid and regarded in higher esteem amongst the community.
