TANK DESTROYER THREAD:

/k/ what is your choice of tank destroyer?

I would have to go with Sturmgeschütz III Ausführung G (StuG III Ausf. G)

because it is quite maneuverable, it can traverse relatively fast and has a powerful 7.5 Pak 42 L/70 Gun.

No, it doesn't.

T28/95 is the sexiest assault tank ever designed, but playing lots of WoT doesn't mean their stupid, arbitrary classifications are valid in real life. It's like calling the Strv 103 a TD.

That being said, if I had to go with a real TD, it'd probably be something like pic related. The concept today is pretty much resigned to nations with the industrial capacity to produce their own equipment on large scales, but lack the money to mass produce real tanks, current generation tanks. Sprut-SD is also a contender, but for some reason the Type 89 just looks better to me; more meaty.

>Following the defeat of Nazi Germany, the US and UK declare war on the USSR to stem the advance of the Red Army across Europe
>After a over a year of fighting, the US has pushed the Red Army forces all the way back across Germany, and now fight to retake Berlin

>0800, June 19, 1946
>Just inside the city limit of Berlin, Germany

>Two T30s and three M26E1s of one of America's numerous newly formed Armored Heavy Assault Divisions roll past numerous burned out structures
>All is quiet as the commander of the lead M26 scans ahead of him, supporting infantry following behind the column
>Two flashes, one less than a second after the other, are seen about 800m ahead
>The second tank, a T30, is hit first. The round bounces off the mantlet
>The second round hits the turret ring of the lead M26, instantly killing the gunner and commander
>Infantry scatters as the surviving crew of the stricken M26 abandons their vehicle.
>The now lead T30 commander identifies a bunker at the end of the boulevard, occupied by a pair of 100mm Mod.1944s
>Another shot rings out, this one hitting a structure to the direct left of the T30
>The Commander gives the order to fire.
>A deafening roar and a massive fireball scream from the muzzle of the 155mm T7
>Not a second later the bunker is raped by the 155mm high-explosive shell
>All that remains of the emplacement is rubble and a fine, vodka-scented mist
>The T30 crew pushes forward, using the bulk of their vehicle to push the wrecked M26 aside

>The unit, in their haste, soon outpaces their infantry support
>Passing by an alleyway, the lead T30 trundles carelessly into sight of a well hidden T-34/85.
>The T30 Commander orders the driver to move the vehicle
>The massive tank careens into the opposite curb and into a structure as the Panther fires
>The tank is hit, propellant cooking off as the crew hastily abandons their vehicle
>A second later the ammunition detonates, sending the colossal turret flying into the building with the force of a crashing aircraft
>The T-34 is dealt with quickly as the infantry moves up, easily flanking the hidden tank.
>However, by now a second tank, an IS-3, has rolled into the path of the armored column
>The tank fires, the D-25-T cannon tearing a hole through the number two M26, directly into it's upper glaces
>The second T30 rolls around, using the wrecked M26 to cover it's hull as it opens fire.
>The 155mm HE shell the front turret face of the IS-3
>The tank's mantlet is torn off and the turret itself pushed back on the hull.
>The driver’s hatch implodes from the force of a direct 155mm HE round hit.
>What crew members that aren't decapitated by the force of the impact are subjected to a swarm of metal fragments flying around the inside of the vehicle
>Having not seen the tank brew up, the crew of the T30 fires a second shell, this time one of the newly designed armor piercing rounds
>The massive projectile easily punches through the pike nose of the Russian tank, the plates cracking apart along weld lines
>Fire quickly engulfs the vehicle as the Americans continue up the street, the T30 easily shrugging the IS-3 to the side as it passes by.

Hope you like that. I whip it out every now and then.

Except it's not. Tank destroyers rely on docterine, and after the resignation of the M56, the US doesn't have any. Fair enough, if you gave Russia 100 M551s and asked them what they would use them as (inb4 target practice), the answer would probably be TDs, but this was not what they were desined for. Similarly, if you gave the US Army 100 Sprut-SDs, they'd probably classify them as Assault Guns, similar to the M1128 MGS.

The issue we face here is that a TD is such a specific thing today that it's less a matter of "oh, it can do this and that and also kill tanks, so it's a TD." and more a matter of "It kills tanks and it only kills tanks, so it's a TD."

fair point.
I'm just having trouble with the concept of that being all it does vs that being all it can do, you know what I mean?

I just don't get the idea of having something like the hellcat where
>all it does is kill tanks
>that is all it could ever do
vs something like the sheridan where, if you set up the doctrine
>all it does is kill tanks
>it could also be pushed into a scout/light role if necessity arose
I just don't get the point of pigeonholing all your equipment into these very specific roles and therefore fucking the possibility of adaptation.
>>
>>33259757
>I just don't get the point of pigeonholing all your equipment into these very specific roles and therefore fucking the possibility of adaptation.

Yeah, welcome to 21st century weapon design. For some reason most nations, and the US especially, has a bad track record with things like this. We look at our stuff, ask "why can't it do more" and then some faggot shows up and says "Why can't it do EVERYTHING?!" Then we end up with shit like the MBT-2000, FCS, LCS, and F-35 (not going full Spreytard here. We all know too much was asked of it).

The other thing is that now, in an age of man-portable and airborne precision anti-tank weapons, the need for a mechanized, ground based system has waned. For example, if you wanted to turn a Stryker into a "TD", you could develope a 120mm gun turret, or missile launcher system for a few million dollars, or you could throw an FGM-148 team in back and call it a day.

>>
>>33259915
Was it really? You're sure that's not the 2S4 Tyulpan? I mean, I get that barrel length isn't necessarily indicative of role when it comes to artillery, but I'd think a long-barrel 17 inch gun would be a howitzer and not a mortar.
>>
>>33259954
This is a circumstantial matter. The German's lack of tanks to oppose the M18 doesn't change what it was inherantly designed to do. The M10 was arguably a more effective SPG than it was a TD, but it doesn't change the fact that it was a tank destroyer.

All this being said, my "Kills tanks and only tanks" was more in terms of post-war and modern weapons. Admittedly, with America in WWII, the line is a little bit less about function and more about what department wanted, or didn't want, what features.

If you watch the video that this anon >>33259721 posted, you'll see that the US had a lot of bureaucratic issues when it came to the development, testing, procurement, and production of anything armored.

Totally fine. Not everyone can know everything.
If you want a quick summary of the Ferdinand:

>Competition for Germany's heavy tank (Tiger) comes out
>Two companies quickly jump to the front of the line; Henschel and Porsche.
>Henschel's design becomes the Tiger I we all know and love.
>Porsche's design used a complex gasoline-electric hybrid transmission. It had the benefit of equal forward and reverse speeds.
>Except the whole idea was terribly executed, there were mechanical breakages, electrical shortages, and fires. Plus a lot of regular maintenance needed.
>Porsche loses the contract but already built 90 hulls because he was confident he would win.
>Turn those hulls into tank destroyers.
>Hitler accepts them, they are named Ferdinand.
>Debut as Battle of Kursk
>Lose half of those 90 vehicles (Mostly abandoned by crews after they became stuck, broke down, or were swarmed by Soviet infantry because there were no defensive machine guns)
>Following Kursk, the remaining ~45 Ferdinands are given: wider tracks, a new gun shield, a bow gunner, commander cupola from a StuG

Never had B-52 CAS. Never really wanted it, either. The Lancer pilots in my AO fucking loved playing Top Gun and doing low-level fly-bys, I guess because they're the only swing-wings left in either fleet. It seemed to be effective, too; never had much trouble when a 300,000 pound bomber was constantly swooping down below 1,000 ft AGL at 400 mph.

Nigger, that's like trying to out-cool an M1A2 with an M4. They're both great, don't get me wrong, but this is the 21st century.

Admittedly, yes, this is all off topic and no aircraft is really a tank destroyer in any concept except maybe the A-10 and AH-64.

Surprise there American bureaucracy fucks ribs things up.
All of the tank destroyers over ww2 did more than just kill tanks

The video is of course Tyulpan, I posted it to give you an impression of what a large calibre mortar sounds like as opposed to a typical artillery "boom" sound. Oka was a self-propelled mortar, don't know why would anyone think it wasn't. Your own pic >>33259676 related, the round is visible in front of it.

I mean, I see how the C-103 is a mortar, just by looking at it, but visually the 2B1 doesn't share a lot of the same characteristics of Soviet SPMs, namely the overhanging breech to allow high angles of fire. The 2B1 just doesn't seem to fit into that, whereas the centrally mounted gun and the layout of the suspension to compensate for recoil more back than down would indicate an SPH to me. Admittedly, Iim not sure what about the weapon's projectile is indicative of it being a mortar. I'm no expert, so I could be wrong.

S-103 is a recoilless gun, it's a different thing.
The decision to cancel Kondensator was made, among a umber of other reasons, due to how fast the the recoil damaged the chassis beyond any repair.

>T28/95 is the sexiest assault tank ever designed, but playing lots of WoT doesn't mean their stupid, arbitrary classifications are valid in real life. It's like calling the Strv 103 a TD.

do you consider the ISU 152 to be an assault gun or TD?

In reality most "TD" had gun capable of both engaging hard and soft target, with british td being the exception.

How in the fuck did they spent an _entire year_ slugging it out in Germany?

Without Lend-Lease, the Soviets would have ground to a halt within a month while the U.S. and British bombed the fuck out of them the whole time, while launching Normandy v2.0 on the Polish Baltic coast.
