buy it but dont cut it down. long barrels are simply better as shooters and getting rarer everyday as morons take hacksaws to them. "but i need it to be short" that theres a takedown model it splits in half. "but i want it to be short for hd" spoiler a shotgun with an 18 inch barrel is still fucking long and will be outdated for hd when you buy an ar 2 years later or just decide to use a pistol instead.
at this point your hd shotgun rusts in a closet. if you kept the long barrel you could still have fun with clays or hunting.

I've got other guns for HD, I honestly just want it short because I think it'll look good.

Maybe I'll look for another barrel to chop, something with a polychoke or some shit. Will I have any trouble fitting something like that? I've heard (perhaps falsely) that some parts are hand fitted and not interchangeable.

I don't think I'd pay to make the trade, but I was thinking about just doing the trade straight up. Do you not think a Model 12 is worth close to a 8-shot Mossberg?

Is it just for blasting and general appreciation? If so, M12s are gorgeous guns. Beautiful machining, fit and finish.

They leave a lot to be desired as working shotguns though. They're not rated for steel, so they're pretty much out of the question for a high volume waterfowl gun. They're very heavy for upland hunting. And it's worth checking if the one you're being offered is even chambered for 2.75" shells. A lot of those older guns were chambered for 2.5".

IMO it's not a good idea to chop them down. I understand why people do it, but they're best left as is and appreciated for what they are.

Sold mine and bought a mossman for less moneys. I'm a student and needed a good versatile hunting shotgun more than a beauty queen and the M12 couldn't compare in terms of practicality.

I don't hunt, it'll just be a fun gun. I'm also a broke student (I'm finishing law school and I have a fiance), but for something like this I'd be willing to trade some practicality for some character and history.

Actually I don't have much into it at all. I the stock polymer stuff to a friend for the wood furniture. I bought a side saddle for $25 and an extra stock for $14 to make into a pistol grip, but that's just about it. The heatshield came with the gun.

I think if they won't take a straight up trade I'll walk. They have a 20 gauge Mossberg with a ribbed barrel for $350 on the same rack, so who knows, maybe they'll go for it.

It's a steel receiver on the Win 12, it goes "ching ching" when racked, not "clack clack."
