I suppose that depends on how in-depth he wants to get with each nation. For instance, do you toss in Berdan II with Russia or Mauser 1887 with Turkey? Royal Navy also used Arisakas and 7x57mm Remington Rolling Blocks as substitute rifles for instance. We could get way into the weeds here with Mauser Fleigerkarabiners, Serbian M80/07C Mauser-Djurich 7x57mm repeater conversions, Chinese M1907 Mausers in German service, etc.

Anyone know if k98 front sight hoods will fit on an m48?

>>33250884
Everything seems to be fine even though the sight was flipped forward when it fell, its like hard vinyl not concrete so it seems like no damage was done. I did die inside though.

I think it fell barrel first so it might have hit the edge of the barrel or bare front sight but it was like slow motion with me diving to grab it so its a bit fuzzy.

Besides that and it missing the front sight hood and sling and cleaning rod its good for $290 total.
>>
>>33253315
Now that is a good question. I'll check tomorrow. I believe it's an FN Model.
>>
>>33253443
FN-made rifles have the crown crest on the receiver and the serial # in Arabic; Century-built rifles have the eagle crest and a serial number in Western numerals with a "D" serial prefix.

I think it's pretty clear that you're just working on the commonly issued arms. The Royal Navy issued Arisakas were limited and most were dumped on Russia anyhow so it doesn't make much sense to talk about them. I guess you could also say the same about the P14s, but they made a million of them so it's a lot more of them and served a better purpose.

Though, I should say machine guns would be nice addition, but those are harder to get and have someone loan it and shoot it.

So when are you gonna get to WWII?

I had a question in regards to the mosin's accessories. Where would you keep it exactly? I know the cleaning kit comes in a burlap pouch, but does that just get placed anywhere in your pocket? How about the oil bottle? Did they have an assigned place to put these or a pouch on the belt like with the ammunition?

Please help me out milsurp friends.

Can you guys give me an estimate on how much a Gewehr 98 and Lebel will run me if I'm looking for one in a decent, shootable condition?

Are there any decent auction or milsurp sites that you'd recommend for tracking these down? Because waiting for them, especially the Lebel, to pop up on gunbroker seems like it's going to take a while. I'm not familiar with milsurp at all and wold appreciate any help.

solid price innit?
>>
>>33256639
That's a good looking MAS but it's a gun that's cheap an unpopular for a reason, the bolt is profoundly simple and the lockup is less than ideal. It's basically a french mosin innit?

That sais, it;s still a decent price, yes.
>>
>>33256639
No, $100 tops for sportered garbage.

$400-600 will get you a shooter Gew.98; they don't draw the Wehraboos like the Kar.98k does.

Post a WTB ad on the Gunboards' Trader forum and see if you get any bites.

My shooter Gew.98 isn't even a Gew.98.

That's a lot cheaper than I was expecting, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised that WW2 weapons are more desirable for the Nazi connotation.

The ones you find in that price range are usually mis-matched and/or have Turkish property marks (but I don't mean Turkish re-builds); they got a LOT of Gew.98s in 1917-1918 as war aid from Germany and left behind by German troops fighting alongside the Turks.

The serious Gew.98 collectors don't really go for them because they feel the rifles have been tainted by Turkish use (and they don't shoot their rifles anyway).

They no longer look like Gew.98s; they have a different barrel profile, flat tangent-leaf rear sight, handguard that extends from the lower barrel band to the receiver ring, and Mauser 1890-style bayonet lug.
Pic related, my Turkish M98/37 rifle built on an ex-Gew.98 receiver. New Turkish-made barrel, sights, stock, barrel bands and bayonet lug.

I'd like to be able to afford a down payment on a house some day.

I don't even deserve surplus, I just throw my gats in shitty old closet with a bare wooden floor protected by nothing but a gun sock and some ballistol sprayed on the metal.

I also am impatient and impulsive so I don't bother with auctions, and end up only buying direct from dealers sight unseen and get luck of the draw/overpay because of that impatience.

I don't even know what I want in particular except when I see something in these threads I have to have that too.

tl;dr help. If you can't/won't help me stop this terrible addiction altogether at least steer me in a healthier direction. So far I have a pretty nice yugo SKS, an ok-ish swede m/96, an ok-ish K31 (got some minor rust on trigger guard/receiver/mag and the buttplate isn't totally flush with the stock), and the M48 on the way, what should I focus on next and how much should I pay?

Also, wtf did they do to these bayonets that made them last fucking forever? Should have made the whole damn gun out of it.

I'm going to a local pawn shop to look at a Rifle made by Remington in 1917. I've looked around google and it doesn't seem to resemble a M1917 Enfield at all or any other rifle I can find. I don't know what the hell it is because they didn't list the caliber. It's just a mishmash of numbers. This is the only picture I could get that isnt fucking shitty.
>>
Might be able to get a Long Branch No 4 Mk 1 with a peep sight, "perfect" bore, and matching serials. Unsure on price, but if it's going for the same as another one he has, it's $450 (non US).
Even if I can just get a normal No 4 Mk 1 for $450, should I do it?
>>
>>33258373
I think that if the 1917 had more time for refinements like the mas we'd be seeing more carbine versions like the Chinese did. Plus the weight helps whatever recoil but eh, not much to start

Century models have a plastic butt plate. Either way, $700 is a fair price. Century didn't really "build" them, they assembled new old stock barreled actions and made new stocks for them. They are basically brand new rifles, but don't have that "historical value" jazz. Mine looks great and shoots great.

Yes, but that belies the cost of ownership, I.E. ammo. That is no longer cheap, at least by what most of /k/ would consider cheap.

You buy what you want most first. Only reason to buy a bunch of cheap 'surp is if you're actually getting it CHEAP, not "cheap by 2016" standards.

Was at the gun shop getting a refund. That was from a round that fired while the bolt wasn't completely closed. Those are from pieces of the cartage methinks. Sheared the rod that sits in the back of the bolt clean off the firing pin (was rattling around in the action), bent the dust cover out a ways and cracked the receiver. Anybody here know about 49's having feeding issues or r firing with a partially open bolt?

In all fairness all mosins were linseed oiled during both wars and before being shelllac'd for storage. Finn mosins even got a taste of birch/pine tar.
>>
>>33267420
>how are the Roach-made barrels?
Fine.
>did Mauser set up machines for them or something?
No, it was actually CZ-Brno which sold them a TON of spare parts and used rifles in the 1920s as well as technical packages and also helped to set up their domestic rifle production at Kirikkale (before being annexed by Germany).

>>33267634
Russians started using shellac as a final finish in 1943. They were churning them out so fast that the shellac was sometimes not dry during final assembly and gummed up in the barrel bands. Pine tar in Finnish Mosins is fuddlore that will not die.

You're right. It was Birch tar mixed with linseed oil and turpentine.

Unless you have another theory what the smokey tar substance is that contradicts the experts.

You must be blind or unable to do further research on your own.

That link was from 2011. There has been plenty more research into the subject.
>>
>>33268185
Yes, the Finns say it's BLO with a varnish.
>>
>>33268426
Do you even know what a varnish is?
Usually a tree resin, like birch or pine tar, dissolved in turpentine.
Finnish and Russian turpentine was not particularly pure and contained amounts of pine tar as well, especially during the war years.
>>
>>33268426
var·nish

noun
1.
resin dissolved in a liquid for applying on wood, metal, or other materials to form a hard, clear, shiny surface when dry.
Guess what pine and birch tar are made of. Hint: it rhymes with Esin.

Pine tar in particular is easy, you take the resin and heat it up to burn off any turpentine.

But please define "Finns" If the Finnish armory has bottles of Kiväärintukkiöljy for use on stocks, and that word i cannot into pronouncing contains Linseed oil, Turpentine(or naptha), and "Varnish" that smells smokey (Like birch!) (and turpentine at the time was less then stellar in Finland and contained pine tar by accident)

The makers of Kiväärintukkiöljy refuse to give the ingredients of what its made of, their "varnish" is a trade secret, or so they act.
Now i'm not saying there weren't other finishes used. It was whatever they had on hand with BLO being the most common
>>
>>33268487
>>33268526
Again, the myth of the pine tar used on Finnish stocks has been disproven for years.

There are ton of varnishes and lacquers.

>>33268526
You also sound a lot like that DeanDallas bubba who has a vested interest in Pine Tar (TM) being used on Finn stocks because he refinished and sold a ton with pine tar finishes.
>>
>>33268605
So you're saying instead of using the natural resins of their country the Finns decided to import exotic varnishes? They then used pharmaceutical grade turpentine, likely also imported, to dissolve it?

It's known they used linseed oil, it's also known they used turpentine which because of production standards and intended use also would contain things like pine tar. They may have used additional pine tar/birch tar, no sources have a consensus and nobody has stepped forward with a GCMS reading or original recipe.
>>
>>33268664
There are lots of varnishes, and I'm sure there are a lot of them in Finland or easily importable in the 1940s by Finland that didn't require silly pine tar. There is zero proof they used pine tar. It was just some dumbass supposition that bubbas took to heart.
>>
>>33268737
Pine based varnish had been the most common varnish for at least the previous 500 years. Cheap and readily available even to ta country with limited industrial capability nd funds.
Even if the did not add more to the mix it was still used as it was present in their turpentine, it's one of those constituents that gets distilled out during purification to better grades. They were not about ot start making artisit or better grades of turpentine simply for industrial use.
>>
>>33268807
>Even if the did not add more to the mix it was still used as it was present in their turpentine, it's one of those constituents that gets distilled out during purification to better grades.
I eat a delicious Reuben sandwich. My body breaks it down and I release the broken down Reuben sandwich from my colon the next day. Is it still a delicious Reuben sandwich or is it shit?

Just because they turned pine tar into turpentine doesn't mean they used pine tar on the rifle stocks.

>They were not about ot start making artisit or better grades of turpentine simply for industrial use.
And why not?
>>

http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?429225-So-what-to-use-on-Finn-M39-brand-new-stock&p=4047385#post4047385
>The original recipe used during the Continuation War was consisted of 95 parts of boiled linseed oil (probably with added manganese borate as a dryer), 5 parts of bitumen (also known as asphaltum or gilsonite) and enough pine turpentine to dissolve the bitumen. The mixture was heated to 70 centigrade before use. The oldest reference I would find for using asphaltum as a wood stain was on a book printed in 1868.
>>
>>33268847

really depends on what you're looking for in a rifle:

want:
>semi-auto
>low recoil
>high mag capacity
>easy to find ammunition
>light/compact
>okay with harder maintenance relative to a bolt action

go for the m1 carbine

want:
>heavier round
>like bolt action rifles
>extremely reliable
>easy to maintain
>great long range capacity
>okay with harder or more expensive ammo

then go k98k

honestly either rifle will do you quite well. it mostly comes down to whether you prefer a semi-auto to a bolt action and the pros and cons those incur along with the ammunition.

i'm not seeing a source. just a Finnish screencap of some document. Highly unlikely they used bitumen as we know it. Though if its just a translation/new meaning error bitumen could also be pitch or tar. which would probably be birch based...

I wouldn't think so, as long as you've done your research. For example, you'd better know not to use anything not M2 Ball spec (150 grain bullet @ ~2700 FPS) without an aftermarket gas plug.

Recoil on a Garand is pretty mild for a full-size rifle cartridge, so I don't really see you developing a flinch or anything.

I suppose one problem you might have is that the ammo is not cheap (~75cpr) and that affects how much you can shoot. I can't really speak, since my No 4 was my first gun, and that's about the same per shot. Reloading helps bring that down, though.

Are you getting it from the CMP?
