So after reading both Flight Of The Intruder and The Intruders within one week and preparing to start with Thud Ridge tonight I thought it would be nice to have a thread dedicated to C-SAR.

I only got rudimentary knowledge about modern C-SAR (and what I know is all about Vietnam era) so it would be cool if some anon could help me a little bit.

So lets say a war breaks out between two equally stron adversaries (for example the US and China)

Bombing mission over some Target 150 inside china, the F15E gets shot down, both crew members hanging from their parachutes - WHAT NOW?
>>
They're probably fucked
>>
>>33238648
Because? I mean what are the pararescue jumpers for?
>>
C-SAR from an apache
>>
>>33238656
Those don't magically make IADS disappear
>>
>>33238656
recovery once you reach a relatively "safe" area. they didn't get everyone that went down.
>>
>>33238656
Not much use when they're shot down too
>>
>>33238682
But aint C-SARs raison d'etre to bail out downed pilots although enemy air defense?

I mean north vietnam back then had the tightest IADS in the world - still the US managed to get lots of downed crew in north vietnam back home - yeah, with big losses
>>
>>33238688
Yeah, thats what I thought. But what would happen step by step? What would the crew have to do and what would happen inside the Air Force as soon as they get a message that "Dragon six-eight" got shot down with two surivors?
>>
>>33238709
>But aint C-SARs raison d'etre to bail out downed pilots although enemy air defense?

No.

Fuck no.
>>
>>33238723
Not him, but why dont you enlighten us instead of your autistic screeching?
>>
>>33238757
Offended huh
>>
>>33238709
No, Vietnam had some missiles and lots of AAA.

That doesn't mean it had the best in the world.
>>
>>33238670
Those Royal Marines were some balsy mother fuckers.

Shame the guy didn't make it.

Read guardian angel by bill sine and none braver.

Both are about USAF pararescuemen it gives a pretty good insight into modern day CSAR. Plus they are an amazing read.
>>
>>33238787
Will do, thanks man

>>33238772
>some missiles

Yeah, nah - North Vietnam ca 1970 had the tightest ammount of SA2s anywhere in the world my friend-

To be fair this wasn't exactly CSAR. This was "personnel" recovery.

For those who don't know it was a raid conducted by 3 Commando brigade Royal Marines on a Taliban compound. They rolled in on Vikings but shit very quickly went sideways and they had to fall back after underestimating the enemy's tunnel network there.

Upon returning to the rendezvous they realised one man was missing, SAT feed showed a person laying motionless against an exterior wall of the compound believed to be the missing man. After some deliberation two Royal Marines volunteered to ride in front of the air intakes on an Apache while a second flew overhead providing overwatch.

The two Apaches took off and flew the short distance. The first one landed dropping off the two Marines as the other bombarded any possible Taliban position (this was the first time an Apache had performed a "hail Mary" while in Afghanistan firing every last round and rocket it had). Sadly Lance corporal Mathew Ford was dead when they reached him. They slung him under the Apache and flew back. There is a really sad image of his body limply hanging under the Apache but I couldn't find it.

Coroner's report found that he had died due to a friendly fire incident as he attempted to enter a breach point made in one of the compound walls.

Sometimes you can't save them all.

Ah that's pretty shit
>>

War generally is, CSAR even more so.

There's actually a book called 3 commando which opens with this mission, it's an incredible read as well as the other two books I mentioned earlier.
>>
So back in Nam the AF had Sandy, Jolly Green and all the bells and whistles. But what do we have now?
>>
>>33240907
What do you mean?
>>
>>33240907
A-10s currently provided "Sandy" escorts, while HH-60s fill out the Jolly Green role. For airborne C&C I think they use the MC-130, but don't quote me on that.
>>
>>33241080
Not to mention that pararescue also have specially designed HH-60s which will allow them to refule from 130s giving them a far larger operational range.
>>
>>33238634
Oh and in response to your question OP.

>Pilots would likely follow SERE procedure and make their way to a designated, predetermined situation.
>The moment the planes went down a team of PJs, Combat Controllers and green berets (I would say rangers but GBs have the language skills) would likely be scrambled and moved to a staging point.
>If the pilots can make it to the RV then great if not they will have means of signalling their location at with point the Recovery team would go airborne.
>They would likely be dropped in via HAHO jump to give them the greatest distance covered while not endangering another aircraft.
>Once on the ground they would move to recover the pilots.
>They would escort the pilots either back into friendly territory or into an area where an extraction cannot take place.

One successful CSAR
