If you ever get into high hardness heat treatments for carbon steels or AEB-L with grain size minimization techniques applied, make sure to post about it in these threads.

One day I'm going to have to find a maker willing to do an experiment for me and do a knife in 1075, 1084 or 1095 at full martensite hardness with as close to zero retained austenite as possible.

In theory it should be the ultimate light use knife due to apex stability, as per the work of Roman Landes.

As long as we're on the topic of Ontario knives...

I would like to let everyone know that Ontario's Spax is a humongous piece of shit.
>weighted wrong to chop with (none of the weight's in the blade)
>blade is too thin to stand up to chopping
>too short to use as a brush clearing tool or machete
>steel is very very soft, there's no way it's the 57-59HRC advertised
>sheath is dogshit in bondage. Seriously the thing has straps going every which way and is un-stiffened Cordura and poorly tanned cheapshit split grain leather.
>the "multitool spanner" in the blade fits fucking NOTHING and is out of spec dimensionally
>edge geometry is bad for everything, mine is at a variable angle ranging from 25*-31*
>I don't even know what the back spine is supposed to be used for, too thin and soft to pry with and at the wrong angle to pry or dig with and it's chisel-ground
>blade coating is a low-test bake-on epoxy that flakes off after 5 minutes of dicking around in the barracks room, after which the 1095 carbon steel "blade" rusted immediately
Which naturally means the military had to buy a shitload of them and make them part of the standard MOLLE II rifleman's kit issue.
>>
>>33244081
Yeah most of those odd shaped tomahawk/hatchet things are pretty crap. Also, I really like Ontario, but they, like too many other brands, come with stupidly thick edges out of box.

I'm in the process of re-profiling an SP-10. And I'm using it to practice my flat polishing as well. It's a good project knife.
>>
>>33244334
That looks pretty good man. I personally would've extended the bevel further up the blade but you do you.
>>
>>33244334
What stone are you using to re-profiled that thing?

For working large bevels like that I typically use a Norton Crystolon coarse with mineral oil. It's like ~90 grit silicon carbide and has an astronomical cutting speed, even compared to something like an Atoma 140.

>>33244836
The best place to start is with what the anticipated scope of work will be for the knife. What kinds of things will you be cutting for the most part? Will it be mostly slicing or mostly push cutting?
>>
>>33245003
for the most part cardboard, tape, the occasional ziptie juts typical things that would be around a warehouse.for the slicing or push cutting i am unsure but i believe the grind lends itself more towards slicing.

That kind of use suggests a coarse finish would be the sensible choice, anything g between ~300-600 grit would probably make the most sense. That type of finish will give you the best edge retention in slicing cardboard.

The original goal was to convex it a 1/4 way up the flat, but I don't have the time or energy, so it turned into a tall convex bevel, at lest for now, still deciding what the final geometry will be, I do think it will be convex though.

Well when I started the project like 2 years ago, I was using the most cores stone on a very Old Norton Tri-stone (pic related). But it's a pretty beat up stone, has not been maintained to well, so I did not get much done.

After that I spent a few hours wet sanding with a harbor freight belt sander, that did most of the work, but was a pain rigging up the water cooling in a way that does not get it every where, and the belts wear really fast when wet.

I don't have a supper course stone atm, but I'm probably going to get a DMT D8XX sooner or later because I need to clean up my water stones, I figure that will work for this as well.

Hey guys

Looking to buy my first knife. Want a general use fixed blade.

I am intrigued by the KA-BAR BK5 and BK10. Both look decent but I don't know shit about knives. I was also looking at something like the Schrade SCHF42D. I also cream over squared blades but can't afford the EOD1 and the BK3 is too large IMO

Also could use some suggestions or any starting point.

I've heard pretty good things about Knives of Alaska, a little bit rough fit&finish, but they seem to be well made and good reliable tools. I've yet to own one personally though.

D2 is a good steel. Just make sure to wipe it down after use and oil it from time to time, it will pit and rust on you, and I notice Knives of Alaska uses beat blast finishes a lot, which looks nice, but is horrible for rust prevention.

>>33245526
The Bk-5 and 10 are good knives, if you are willing to fork over the $40 extra, the Micarta handles are really worth it, they are much better than the synthetic ones. I have the BK-15 (pic related) and am probably going to pic up a BK-9 at some point.

Thanks senpai, that was the kind of advice I was looking for.
Also, the salesman informed me that D2 requires a diamond stone due to the steel's hardness. I picked up something similar to this but having two sides; coarse and fine. Anything you'd suggest or tip me off about regarding sharpening with a diamond stone?

>>

Diamond, whetstones, waterstone, ceramics, heck sand paper, ect... they'll all work, at lest for getting a working edge.

As >>33245754 said, technique is more important, and consistency (keeping your hands at the same angle) is the most important. I highly recommend using something like that diamond stone for the rough work, but consider getting a Spyderco Sharpmaker to put the final edge on. They are very easy to learn and you can easily get hair shaving edges with a little practice. I sharpened my knives this way for a few years before I got more invested into sharpening.

>>
>>33248014
>Are camillus knives worth a shit?

Not new Camillus, no. See what the first guy said.

If you're looking for a machete I'd recommend Ontario's, they're pretty damn solid. I fucked up 2 cheap machetes before I decided to get the budget version of the 18" Ontario machete (2mm thick instead of 3, some would say this is better) and that machete lasted me for a damn long time. It actually never broke, I fucked it up while trying to modify it because I didn't think to get a cheap machete and try out the grinder on that first. Turns out removing a uniform amount of metal from the spine of a blade is actually pretty difficult. If you want to stay ultra cheap then I'd say go with Imacasa/Tramontina.

If you're looking for a good cheap fixed blade then Mora and Condor are good choices.

Quick question. Looking at some custom makers. Is a karambit style out of 5160 RC 58-60 with a recognizable hamon for $225 a good deal?

Gavko knives..jpg
64KB, 800x600px
>>33250389
If your looking at a custom, or pretty much any knife over $100, the quality and fit&finish is almost more important than the material used, assuming the material used is not sub par.

From a practicality stand point, obviously a $225 Karambit is not great, especially not a differential tempered one, the hamon looks really cool, but it's not as good a mono temp (performance wise) and is extra pointless for such a short blade, because you could have just run the whole blade at high hardness with out worry of structural problems.

The tl;dr of it: not enough information to base the price of a custom completely on blade shape and steel used.

But I would say $225 is pretty cheap as far as "custom"s go, at lest if it is an established maker. Both the knives from my pic related are over $250 for example.
>>
>>33250457
All good points. I was kind of put off because he has a karambit style, but it's 3/16" thick and that seems weird. Would like to find a reputable maker, but harder than it seems.
>>
>>33250504
Why not go for a cheaper production one for starts? Just to see if you like it in general?

Yeah I don't know about the OD part, it's not a commonly used color, at lest that I have seen. You can custom order some Benchmades, so you could get something like a Griptilian with OD handles or a coating, they have a few others you can order custom too. As for just good EDC knives sub $100, with thumb studs, I always recommend the Cold Steel Code 4.

Not sure what you mean by bearing. I don't personally don't own a Griptilian, or any Benchmade atm in fact. But I've handled/sharpened quite a few, like the 940-1 in pic related.

Benchmade is very consistent, they are a good company. The Axis Lock is nice, fun to play with, and pretty sturdy.

I'm personally not a fan of the Griptilian, but it's a good knife.

It's originally a farm knife that has been adapted for self defense. They suck for utility purposes for the most part. I imagine they'll be fine for cutting clothes, rope, twine, tape to a degree.
>>
>>33253693
With the bearing I'm referring to the axle of the blade. The drifter has a tiny copper disk for instance.

And I'm asking more about the Cold Steel Code 4, since I assume you recommended it. Like the tanto looks, but practicality is more important.

Also I've never sharpened a knife myself in my life.

The Code4 is my go to heavy duty folder. I normally carry it while I'm working labor jobs. The only complaint I really hear about them is the handle is a bit too thin and can be uncomfortable, but this is not an issue at all for me. For the $75 ish, the Fit&finish is very good, and the blade steel (CTS-XHP) is phenomenal for the price point. Keep in mind, it is a larger knife, but it carries very well since it's so thin, and it's very light for it's size, Aluminum handles was the perfect choice.

The (American) Tanto point is not bad for cutting boxes and stuff like that, but in general, the Clip and Spear point are more useful. I also happen to really like the look of the Spear point so I got that (pic related is mine).

Maybe a bit hard to sharpen if you have not sharpening experience, so you are not going to want to practice on it, really any knife that worth anything. Sharpening is a whole other topic, we can go into it if you want.

I want a bigger and heavier duty knife. Think I found it. But sharpening 101, not now please. Wanna hit the hay soon, I hope.

Which one, both are pretty easy to find. The Folding one has a larger variaty, but you only really need T-10 and smaller for most knives, it's good for really torcing down and breaking locktight seals. The Driver set has smaller bits, for odd knives like the Boker Kwaiken that feels it nessisary to use some T4 screws, and is more nice to use, but is more expensive and not enough torc to break lock tight seals. I have both because some knives need two of the same bits at the same time.

Alright, well I'm normally on ktg most days. And there are a few other sharpening fags here, I'm the only one (at lest of what I've seen) that is into set angle systems though.

And yeah, did not know you are a Eurofag, the I have no familiarity with that market or the normal going rates.
