If I join the military and serve it until it ends for me, do they give me a weapon of my choice or do I have to return everything to them?
>>
You get a boot on the ass and a VA appointment two years later.

Yes but I was wondering if I keep some of the weapons they give me?

That's pretty gay, guess joining the military is retarded after all.

Read what you just typed and keep doing until you realise how stupid the question you posted is.

When i joined at 18 i told my 16 year old mate that for target practise at the range we used real life taliban POW's so we can simulate gun effects, he actually believed me for ages and randomly mentioned it in a conversion with his dad's mate who was ex-army at the pub.

Apparently the pub burst into laughter.

I always have a giggle when i think about it and imagining OP asking that question with a serious face made me think of that moment.
>>
>>33236786
At what point did you ever gain the impression that this is how the military works?

The only country in the world that allows their service members to retain weapons is Switzerland, and even then they don't get to choose.
>>
>>33238176
Don't you keep your rifle in Switzerland? It's just converted to semi auto or something
>>
>>33238218
And Israel i think, but the assumption was that OP was from a real country.
>>
>>33236786
You return everything except some of the clothing that isn't hygienic to reuuse.

If you're lucky you'll get a paycheck afterwards and you can use that money to buy more funs.
>>
When you get into the military
The military will provide you with a rifle
The rifle will be your wife, for better or worse
When you retire from the military
You will return your rifle
The military will provide your wife to the next in line.

No, you fucking idiot. The US government does not let you keep all of your fucking kit after your enlistment is up. Are you 12 fucking years old? Do you realize how many veterans there are in the United States? And if they let you keep your rifle, why stop there? The average infantryman carries about $20,000 worth of equipment. Imagine if they let every single veteran walk away with 20 grand after serving for 3 or 4 years.

It's Wednesday, don't you have school or something?

If I start working at Marvel Studios and then I leave, will they let me keep Scarlett Johansson, or do I have to just leave her there with Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey, Jr?

As a matter of fact, I just did a little math. There are 21 million veterans in the United States. 21 million. Now, the average soldier today has about $28,000 worth of equipment. But of course it used to be cheaper back in the day, so let's average that down to $15,000, just for argument's sake. That includes their rifle, last time I checked I believe the US gets an M4 from Colt for about $800.

That is $315 trillion if they let every veteran keep their kit. Hell, let's just say they only let all of them keep JUST their rifle. That's $16.8 billion.

The government cannot even afford to keep veteran's hospitals and medical services open for people who got their fucking legs blown off or are so fucked up in the head they had to leave their wife in case they went crazy one day and murdered her. What in the FUCK makes you think they can afford to just let them walk away with perfectly useful equipment as a "thank you."

Colt and other government suppliers are already pumping out M4s as fast as they can just to replace the shit that gets ruined in training and use overseas.

Please go sit in the corner and think about what an idiot you've been.

And you may think it's unfair to say that every veteran would have, on average, $15,000 worth of kit. But considering most WWII vets are gone, it's fair. Vietnam was when the average infantryman started carrying a lot more shit. Adjusted for inflation, I would say $15,000 on average is a fair number.
>>
>>33236786
>If I join the military and serve it until it ends for me, do they give me a weapon of my choice or do I have to return everything to them?

Yes, you get to keep all your equipment.

The National Guard is good. I like the NG and the Coast Guard a lot because they actually do a lot for the civilian population besides killing sandniggers with air strikes that cost more for one sortie than they will make in their entire lives
>>
>>33239167
In the US military, at least, all weapons belong to the unit. Issued by the unit, only issued when needed, and subject to random change at the whim of leadership and the armorer.
>>
>>33239574
>315 trillion
That's 315 Billion with a B
Which is chump change in the grand scheme of the Military-Industrial complex
>>
>>33239601
The total spending of the entire United States is $600 billion a year. Over half of an entire year's worth of spending would be spent just on letting veterans keep a fun toy.

Neck yourself.
>>
>>33239488
subtle kek
>>
>>33239618
You're talking about 21 million veterans, most of whom have been retired for many years.

It's not as if we're hypothetically giving them a new rifle every year.
>>
>joining the military
are people still falling for this meme?
>>
>>33239618
The US discretionary spending budget for 2016 was just over 1.15 Trillion.

Mandatory spending for 2016, which includes veterans' benefits, was 2.63 Trillion.

What the fuck are they lugging around?
Legit question here.
Obviously you got the rifle and the clothes, but that probably amounts to 1500$ tops so where does the rest come from?
Did MRE's get more expensive lately?

So NV/Thermal gear makes up the bulk of that figure?

Is that something every grunt carries around, or only actual operators?
>>
>>33240304
Alright, asuming the picture is still up to date, we're talking roughly 18000$ of equipment.
I still dont see where that number comes from.
From that picture i can see
>Rifle
Shouldnt be that expensive overall.
Lets say it costs them 800$
>Optic
I guess this is just on average since they dont just dish them out to everyone.
Lets say 1500$
>Body armor/Helmet
Lets say they pay around 500$ per soldier
>knee and elbow pads
50$
>Boots
Somewhere around 300$ probably
>Night and thermal scopes
Again, definetly not something everyone gets.
Not sure how much the US government pays for those, but i guess its ranging somewhere around 8000$ maybe?
So now we are at roughly 12000$
After adding that together i realised that its actually more than i expected.
Anyways, where do the 5000$ dollars that are left go to?
>>
>>33240279
Gen III IOTVs cost around $800.

ECWCS Gen III is probably close to a grand.

The current 5-piece Modular Sleep System is ~$400. $900 new at one site.

And don't forget things like M68 ($800) or ACOG ($1500), PEQ-15s ($1300), PVS-14 ($3000+), PSQ-20 ($18,000), PRC-152 ($5000), PRC-154 (~$5600), and so on.
>>
>>33240410
>ECWCS Gen III is probably close to a grand.
Didnt expect that.
I always asumed the IOTVs would be more expensive.
>And don't forget things like M68 ($800) or ACOG ($1500), PEQ-15s ($1300), PVS-14 ($3000+), PSQ-20 ($18,000), PRC-152 ($5000), PRC-154 (~$5600), and so on.
Thats where i see the problem with that graphic.
I believe that its the price on average for soldiers, but i doubt that every soldier costs the same.
Its not like everyone gets ACOGs, PEQs and PSQs afterall.
Or am i mistaken?

Cucked by your wife or girlfriend when you're on duty.

Cucked by your bosses when you leave.

Also to note we have already started stepping towards the future scale so like the other anon said with $28k it would be closer that end rather then $18k

I had typed out a list, but just found this picture instead.

>I always asumed the IOTVs would be more expensive.
It's 12-component (plus duplicates of the undershirts and long johns) seven-layer system of the latest and greatest stuff buy companies like Polartec.

In infantry, yeah everybody'll be tricked out. The one place we don't fuck around is force multiplier technologies. The PRC-154 Rifleman radio is intended as both in-team comms and to provide positioning data through NETT Warrior and up to higher levels.

>>33240368

Optics are standard issue to the entire Army now.
