Just bought pic related off of ebay for $45 shipped. The seller mentioned that the "string on the back" might need replacing. If this is the case, how easy would this be to fix? How bad did I fuck up /k/?
Pic related is the mask I bought

I got an M14a2 tanker's gas mask for 40 bucks.

Lucky as fuck to have found it that cheap.

Doesn't look that bad opie. Wouldn't worry about it. The M17 is an aesthetic as fuck mask though. The military style two piece lense (M17, M40, etc) look way better imo even though shit like the M50 with a one piece lens are much more modular and easier to use.

Pics, it did happen.

Filter is disconnected for my health and safety. Despite coming from 'Nam, it is pretty much the most comfy gasmask I've had the pleasure of wearing. My only problem is that the filter will give me chromium poisoning and it fogs up like a motherfucker.

Why don't all gas masks have a side mounted filter? With a gas mask like the Finnish M61 you can get a perfect cheek weld.

Looks fine, OP

If the scratches are bothersome, you can pick up some replacement lenses on eBay for pretty cheap

Because sometimes a country does not have the budget to manufacture two different types of masks. Although I think with some places like Germany it's more of an issue of "this is how we've always done it".

Pretty much this. If you keep lurking you can get really lucky. Go to your local milsurp store and see what they have.

Mine bought a fuckton of US stuff when it went out of service, and has been selling them from the same lot since 2000 at the same price too. You get lucky some times.
>>
>>33234369
aren't most gas masks poisonous to breath through after a few years because the filters go bad or something?
>>
>>33245388
Some old filters (like really fucking old) contain asbestos or chromium in them, which will fucking kill you, painfully, over time.

All others are carbon, which usually holds up pretty well. The issue comes with damage to the filter. If the paper barrier between the carbon block or dust gets damaged then you are now breathing in carbon, which will fuck you sideways.

As long as you know it is carbon and it looks good on the outside and where you can see in it and has no heavy residue or free dust on the filter caps or plugs, you should be just fine.

Those masks are $350+ out of the factory, you lucky bastard. I got mine for sixty from ebay still int he factory box, but $45 is fucking insane.

>>33243676
Millenium has a lot of improvements, like being able to see. It's definitely worth the buy if you can find one that's not super expensive.
>>
>>33245169
Actually, you might have gotten an old one where the face plate is gross and yellow. They work fine, but it does heavily reduce visibility in some cases. I recommend the black reflective outsert, because it's badass.
>>
>>33245465
Just about every surplus filter out there is carbon based.
The only way to be exposed to the chromium and asbestos is physical damage to the filter letting the carbon leak.
>>
>>33245538
Yeah, it is yellowed. Too bad replacement costs about as much as the mask.

>>
>>33245665
Im trying to do the same thing, but it's looking like I'm going to have to retrofit a pair of store bought headphones into it unfortunately.
>>
>>33245956
From what I've been able to guess at and theorize, is that, with the help of a function generator and an oscilloscope, you could probe each of components on the Jack to find out which one operates the mic and which are for each ear piece, then solder leads off of each and adapt it to 3.5mm or whatever your choice is.

But I can into electronics, and love to over-engineer the fuck out of shit. There is probably a simpler way, like get the plug for it and splice it off from there.

>Danker than an anchor

Anchors aren't dank. Anchoring is the worst fucking part about working aboard a ship. Loud, dangerous, dirty, and a pain in the ass. Also probably the second most common shipboard fuckup after running aground. A few years ago a boat lost propulsion in the St. Claire river and had to drop her anchors to slow down. Lost both her bower anchors and the stern anchor because the crew was fuckin retarded and didn't put the brake on

I had a good chuckle at it when I heard about it too. Ripped the deck plates right off the fuckin ship. And if I remember correctly they couldn't find one of the anchors. So somewhere in the St. Claire river there's a huge fuckin anchor with about 1000 foot of chain and the forecastle of a ship laying around

The GP-5's associated filters have been reported to contain both blue and white asbestos, so be careful. If you plan on using it, the filters for the GP-7 are safe and look similar to those of the GP-5. Otherwise, a modern 40mm NATO will work just fine.
