Good evening /k/ourtly gentlemen!

As a loyal subject to our good King George (long may he reign), I have come to fear the safety of my self, my negros and my property at the hands of the rebel "revolutionaries", here in the Virginian colonies.

At present, I possess two fine fowlers and my hunting sword, but little else with which to defend my homestead! What say you: Shall I next acquire a German rifle to dispatch the villains at a distance, or invest my guineas in a English blunderbuss to cut a swath through them up close?

Do you fancy yourself a man of the Orient, do you masturbate to their woodblock carvings? for what reason would a swords stop a boar enraged and set upon thy loins?

A spear is the only sensible answer.

Rifles of the German Style are of the most excellent quality, two fowlers are enough to take birds and small beast for the table, a bunderbuss would be an entertaining proposition but one for joviality, not practicality.

Got me self a large capacity repeating rifle from Girardoni. It cost a fortune, but it has a 20 ball repeating capacity and an air reservoire for around 50 shots with enough power to stop a man. It can be shot from a prone position and has no smoke marking your position. It has quite a bang, but it is not that bad.

I'm thankful i was able to get my hands on one. These deadly weapons will probably stay in use with only elite military units once they catch on. I'm sure by 1900, all militaries will use air repeaters and not these silly and more dangerous smoking powder guns.

>it must be fun working with cannons all day

Indeed it is.

>I'm curious what the budgets for things like black powder and cannon balls

I am not privy to the numbers, but as a museum revolving around the American Revolutionary war, keeping us in powder is rather important. In general both Military Programs and the musket range have enough powder through budget and donations.

The budget for cannon balls is non existant, as we never live-load cannon. While we have hundreds of rounds of ball, bar/chain shot, case etc, we have no need, means or inclination to shoot anything other than powder and wad.

Remind yourself this: There is no such thing as a backstop for cannon fire.

> where do you even find those?
Black powder can be bought from Walmart (F, FF, and FFF). Cannon balls and shot are made of lead or stone, and were either made on site, or purchased from cannon round making companies.

Depends on what you're doing, what skills and background you have, etc.

I make enough that I live comfortably with my GF, though I am a long time reenactor/educator, have a lot of related knowledge and education, etc. I've worked a few museums.

If you have no reenacting knowledge or skills, you'd probably be looking at about $11-12 an hour being what essentially is "costumed guest services", working historic area retail or working in manual labour like the historic brickyard. The local perks (free/discount stuff all over the state etc), and bennefits are great though.

Oh, no. We have a huge book of where we get stuff. Gyms, resturants, themeparks, specialists (chiropractors etc), other museusm, book stores... Full timers get access to credited college courses (we have college profs come to our facillities)

And I am unaware if any of our guns are sleeved or not. Leaning to them not being sleeved.
>>
>>33240385
>We have a huge book of where we get stuff
so like extreme couponing but in groups?

>Leaning to them not being sleeved
Nvm I was thinking about Civil War reenacting regulations regarding sleeved cannons. amazing there are still places that will cast cannons but when I think about it it probably isn't too far out there given the tech has probably made it easier than ever to do so. Do you proof them or not bother because it'll be blanks only for its life?
>>
>>33240451
>so like extreme couponing but in groups?
Not quite.

The two things that keep Williamsburg alive, are the Museums and the Theme parks. CW has been possibly the single biggest source of tourist revenue for the city for over 60 years.

It behooves the local businesses to support the employees as such. Little things add up. The fact that I get a discount every time I eat at some local restaurants means I am much more likely to eat there. If the local 24 hour gym offers us half price memberships, then they still come out ahead. Savy?

>Do you proof them or not bother because it'll be blanks only for its life?

If it fires, its proofed. Every pistol. Every long arm. Every artillery piece. No exceptions.

For several programs, we will put the guns on sustained fire for a full 15 minutes. For example, Christmas eve. You want your weapons proofed. I did musket with several others in my unit, and shot three whole cartridge boxes before my Charleville got too hot to physically load.
>>
>>33240558

I cannot tell what programs will be in or out or what the BoD will have decided by then, but I can pretty much assure you the museum will still be doing its thing.

>Christmas eve volleys sound dope as shit.
Oh, you misunderstand. Its not a volley.

Its literally two sections of muskets (and this year, the wall gun), and two cannon being fired at will, as fast as we can, for 15 minutes straight. Its like poor colonial fireworks.

The barrel maker would do the initial proof (gunsmith =/= barrel maker necessarily), with their initial production stamp. After that, the smith would after assembly and give it again with their mark. >How many firearms get proofed in a year
Usually none. We literally have 30~ish Brittish short land patterns (Brown besses) in standard rotation, not counting the various other military arms (Charlevilles, Long Lands, etc).

Then we have the pieces that are functional repros, that are not currently in rotation. Enough to fill the magazine. We literally have a company's worth of functional muskets. This is not counting our pistols, blunderbusses, civilian arms, rifles, hand mortars..... Pic related. One of 12 walls in the two story magazine.

Again, I am military, not artifice. I am fairly certain that we do not except for the items made special order by our gun smith-who is not part of the artifice department, but a separate trades man with a backlog.

Nothing formal, but several of us long time competitors/practitioners get together to teach basics (my smallsword and trainer >>33239877)

I use several manuals, including various Italian and French translations. It really depends on the weapon I am working with. My love of the smallsword leans me to the use of Capoferro and Fabris's rapier plays, though they are earlier. For English, I am a firm fan of Blackwell (pic related).

I also have various PDFs and books for other weapons, including hanger, single stick/broadsword, partisan etc.

Alchem safe flex dagger blades literally slot into a modular tang block, so you can replace the blade easier when it forms a bend or starts to stress fracture. Just be straight with him Gropey. Museum work is in low demand when compared to the broader economy. Particularly in light of El Hefe's dictums to cut the NEA, etc.

Obviously every location and museum budget is different. Most of the costumed interpreters at CW, for example, make anywhere from 11-17$ an hour (so, less than $35000/yr on the upper end). The cost of living in this area is abysmally high, particularly housing.
Long term growth in museums is challenging, and often relies on hopping around (perhaps not so different than other industries), or returning to education. Curatorship in particular is a means of security in position and pay.
For other comparative purposes, the 401k is 1% match, the health insurance is getting dicier each year.
>>
>>33247433

>What's wrong with standard blanks that make then unsafe? They're just paper.

>Wasnt there a sport that used paint balls and a light black powder charge?

No clue, but im going to avoid paint or anything that will ruin clothes. I want something that will hit with decent force, so you know you got hit, but wont kill you if you're wearing a padded coat and a fencing mask.

>>33247500
>Just be straight with him Gropey. Museum work is in low demand when compared to the broader economy. Particularly in light of El Hefe's dictums to cut the NEA.

I fully agree, but again, it all depends on what you can bring to the table. If you have something a museum wants, they will find the money.

>Most of the costumed interpreters at CW, for example, make anywhere from 11-17$ an hour (so, less than $35000/yr on the upper end)
Mentioned that in >>33239950

>The cost of living in this area is abysmally high, particularly housing.
Living right outside the city isn't bad, but all of VA is over priced by my standard (Louisiana native).

>Long term growth in museums is challenging
In general yes, but the particular museum we're discussing tends to keep people until they die.

>Curatorship in particular is a means of security in position and pay.
Oh, I know, and wish.

>For other comparative purposes, the 401k is 1% match, the health insurance is getting dicier each year.
That can be said of a lot of jobs these days.

At least they came off the sick time. That was lorded over our heads a couple years back - Essentially: "use too much of it and you'll get disciplinary action" (not just a hollow threat either) Missed your mention of the pay, my bad.

Black powder fouling isn't shit bro. Borax/oxyclean keeps my white smallclothes parade ready.

>>33247698
Always a bitch to get regular firearms fouling out of my clothes but I don't have much experience with black powder. Maybe try bean bag rounds? Would simulate ramming a patched ball down kind of sort of after a couple of shots.

What in the name of the King are you alleging of me, you good-for-nothing scoundrel? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class from the Royal Military Academy, and I've been present during numerous clandestine quellings of colonial debauchery; in addition, I have personally slain in excess of 300 rebels. I've received instruction in gorilla warfare, and I am the most accomplished marksman in the entire British Army. You are of no matter to me, unless you should choose to serve as another target. I will end your days through an exhibition of accuracy the likes of which has never been seen before on this earth; do not dismiss my claims. You think I'll allow you to slander me in such a manner? Reconsider your assumption. As we speak, I'm contacting my network of spies across the 13 colonies and your postal address is being traced right now, so you had better prepare for the storm, worm. The storm that wipes out that pathetic little thing you call a tea party. You're most certainly doomed, my boy. I can be anywhere, anytime, and tax you in over 700 ways, and that's just with my tariffs alone. Not only am I extensively trained in unfair taxation, but I have access to the finest weaponry available to the British Army, and I will use it to its full extent to remove your miserable arse from our continent, you insignificant turd. If only you could have forseen what unholy retribution your little snide remark was about to bring down upon you, perhaps you would have rescinded your claim. But you were unable, unwilling, and now you shall pay the price, you foolish buffoon. I will shit imperial fury all over you, and you will drown in it. I'm afraid you're done for, my boy.

By that metric, any blackpowder weapon counts. Breechloaders existed in the 1600s.

Also, I have it on good sources that you enjoy being sodomized by other men.
