You're wrong. While I haven't seen much milsurp at the pawn shops with FFLs in my area they do have cheap guns. 90% of my 'surp is from WI; only a couple have come from actual shops; most are FTF or live auction buys.

Pawn shops here in Tx are a shit. Not many shops with milsurps either. One day, I would love to have a shop like that.
>>33229293
Which is why I am doing the group buy now so I don't have to pay a shit load so I can make a magazine's worth of rounds.
>>
>>33229270
It's probably the same few guys. I know several who are collectors, but they already have everything that I have and more, so I can't sell to them. It's also my location. I see plenty of decent stuff from up in the Northwoods, but that's at least a 2 hour drive. Not worth for stuff I'm selling/buying.
I know if I put stuff up on gunbroker it would probably sell, I just am really paranoid that something will break in shipping. Armslist has proven to be a very small market. I used to buy/sell more guns over facebook.

50gr's of IMR 4350 behind a 150gr soft point with a seating depth of 3.00" is comfy to shoot, matches the irons close enough out to 400. according to my chronograph it does 2318fps with a standard deviation of 40fps. original military loading's were 181gr's at 2400 fps

Wtf? Why would you take the original one off? They just fall apart if you do that. My original sling is pretty crusty.

Armslist is the most shady of all gun websites, and people get ripped off on GunBroker often enough as it is.

It's the price. That's crazy low for a SVT40 in the US. Although if it's missing the mag that might make up for it, I think they are $200 a piece.

Yup, but ordering from private party across state-lines lists more concerns, hence they're not a dealer.

What should I do with a Spanish 1912 Mauser and an Ishapore 2A1 which have had the bluing removed by the previous owner. Is it worth getting them hot blued, or should I polish them up and deal with the abomination.

Any sort of bluing is better then stripped bare metal. The damage is done, hot or cold best preserve them in fire able condition. Speaking of do you know where I can get an absolute beater of a 2a1, I want to do a long term project but I need one thats in good working order but has bad finish, barrel and whatever.

I have an all matching 71/84 Mauser i just picked up for $325 a couple weeks back.

shit is out there anon, and as the greatest generation dies off between 2010-2020 there is a treasure trove of bring backs and hoarded goodies that is trickling back onto the market for the first time in 60 years.

just keep a few hundred bucks on hand and do some shopping...estate sales, LGS, pawn shops, consignment shops (Gander MTN, Cabelas etc) check often, and network network network. Its not always what you know, but who you know.

Is it bad habit to shoot these rifles standing up? It honestly would be the most comfortable way for me to shoot it there at this rate. Range is pretty clearly meant for hunters sighting in deer rifles for about 5 shots max and it really shows. Firing anything more than that at that sorry ass table was a pain in the ass.
>>
>>33239767
Well after I fill the vast need for smokeless powder guns, I'll probably move on to my other hobbies. Namely books and beers. Or welders. I do love collecting welders.

I have had and sold many mil surp rifles. I shouldn't have done that with a few but hey no one got hurt my wallet. I get them off of classic and from a local FFL. I'm a huge Mosin man and I have special love for the Mauser pattern as well.
>>
>>33239785
Just shoot standing. Or if you must sit, sit upright and hold the rifle off the table. There's no rule you that you HAVE to use the rest.
>>
>>33239918
figured it would be hard to do accurate shots past a 100meters. I'm not used to shooting standing with a rifle so I'm not as familiar with the technique.

>>33240165
The problem isn't the rest is too low, it's that there is no rest and the table is too high. Imagine the table at about shoulder height, that's how it is with the built in bench.

>>
>>33241776
$400-600 for the Enfield, $500-800 for the K31. Both are fun, the K31 is more accurate, and looks better IMO. If you want a recommendation, of course I say a Mas 36 or a Lebel.

what is the appeal in them? Since when has the French military ever done anything noteworthy in the past hundred years. The only time I hear of them doing anything at all besides screwing up horribly is when they're working for someone else.

Now if you found me a Napoleonic musket or something hell yeah I'd be on that like white on rice. I just don't see the appeal in their more modern guns aside from the FAMAS.

>winning 2 world wars

I'll give you WWI, but what did France do in WWII besides give the Germans a major overconfidence complex? The resistance did some work (civilians) and they did some fighting for both sides, but I don't really recall the French military doing much of anything, at least nowhere near the contributions of Britain, America, Russia, hell even the Poles or Australians.
>>
>>33242533
Free French troops served in all theaters of the war and by the end of the war they had the 4th largest army and because of that the US Army redirected more troops to the Pacific.

It was also French troops who held Rommel up for 3 weeks at Bir Hakeim that allowed Monty to regroup and defeat him at El Alamein.
>>
>>33242763
that's what I mean though, they were fighting for the Americans with American gear. They weren't exactly using native gear or anything. Hence why I'm not seeing the historical appeal of French weapons. Hell most French weapons have more history being used by German forces in WWII than with their original owners.

Hence why I said "what did they do when they weren't working for someone else."

Not trying to troll here, I've just never gotten why people considered France so integral to WWII from a contribution standpoint. I would place the Poles, Australians, hell even New Zealanders over the French, and definitely Canada, as far as contributions to the war effort go. They definitely didn't do enough to warrant getting a chunk of Germany to manage after the war. I always felt that was more a pity prize of "hey sorry we didn't come back to bail you out until 1944" as opposed to a sign that they really did all that much.

Honestly France's biggest contribution was the resistance network, but that's not exactly a military effort.

>they were fighting for the Americans with American gear. They weren't exactly using native gear or anything.
So were the Poles, Czechs, Dutch, Danes, Belgians, etc. The French were under their own command unlike most of the others.

And it's not exactly true that they didn't use their own gear. The older units did for awhile before ammo ran out and their uniforms went to shreds.

Also, the French destroying their own fleet in Toulon was one of the biggest contributions given to the Allies by any of those nations listed above. Keeping the Kriegsmarine weak helped keep the Mediterranean under British control and keep the Italian navy in port.
>>

Enfields CAN go upwards of $2500 but that's not the typical.
>>

OK I'll look that stuff up then. I read quite a lot of WWII history but most of my knowledge is on the eastern front involving the USSR vs Germany and it's allies.

I've never even heard of many of these French contributions till now so I'll do some reading on them and see what I've missed. Thanks for sharing all that, it seems like nobody ever really talks about the French in WWII. I remember being surprised playing CoD Big Red one as a teen when the guys shooting at me were yelling in French, first I'd ever heard of the Vichy forces.

So I guess I own a Turkish mauser now. Unfortunately not a number-matching one, and the wood on the top of the receiver is split, but everything mechanically seems pretty nice.

The only somewhat annoying thing I've noticed is that while the safety is in the 'upright' position if you pull the bolt back, the back end of it that you unscrew for disassembly is completely loose and will rotate down on its own. Is this normal, or is there supposed to be a tab/ button that holds that section in place when in the upright position?

Welcome to the Turkish Rifle Club, Anon!

>is there supposed to be a tab/ button that holds that section in place when in the upright position?
You have an M93/33; the M1893 Mauser action does not have the spring detent of the later M98 action meant to capture the bolt shroud and prevent it from rotating when the bolt is in the open position.
>>
>>33243663
maker would be right next to the serial number usually. It's either a star for Tula or an arrow/triangle for ishzlvezk.
>>
>>33244867
That is Norinco. And are you sure it's the trench gun variant and not just a 1897?
>>
>>33244902
Ah, good to know! Is there any way to stiffen it up at all? The shroud on mine just seems excessively loose, even for not having the detent.

Also, where/ what should I search for a sling? I'm not particularly concerned with 100% period correct, but something that matches it would be nice.
>>
>>33243738
I impulse bought a Yugo Mauser today too. I'd take pics but Illinois has a 24 waiting period.

Johnny Turk would and did use anything for a sling. Older Ottoman-contract Mauser slings, Enfield slings, men's belts, lengths of rope, etc. Their army was quite poor after the Republic was founded. The usual sling pattern of the period was a leather strap about 42" long with thong ties at each end to secure it once looped through the sling swivels, and holes evenly-spaced along one end to adjust length. Any generic South-American Mauser sling would work.
>>
>>33245261
Lucky bastard, I almost bought a Yugo M48 instead of the Turkish rifle, but the Yugo sold the day before I could get to it. It was a pretty decent price too. Oh well, the turk was a little cheaper, and scratches the same itch for me at the moment.

Forgot the more important question.
>Is there any way to stiffen it up at all?
You might need a stronger (or just a new) mainspring; that should put enough tension on the cocking piece/bolt body interaction to induce sufficient friction to keep it in line.

>>33245309
>I'm assuming it's the same deal with Bayonets?
Those at least have a more standardized pattern, which collectors refer to as M1935 pattern. They have a wide ~10" fuller-ed blade and a long guard with muzzle ring for mounting on the M90-pattern bayonet lug that Turkey used on all of their contract-made and re-built Mausers. Sometimes older Ottoman-contract bayonets were cut down to the same length and style.

Reputable yes, but perhaps better to get a brand-new one from Wolff to better cope with the hard/recessed primers of older surplus ammunition. I use a 22# spring for my M98s.

>>

I know the Yugo M48 has an ever so slightly shorter receiver and bolt than the K98, but other than that they're largely the same. The M48 was made on captured German machinery or some-such from what I understand, so that's basically what you're getting.

Not really sure on the others. They're all very similar rifles (basically shortened Gewehr 98s), with little differences here and there. Dunno how they compare to Nuggets.

The indermediate-length FN M98 action of the Yugo M24/47 and M48 means that certain parts won't interchange with standard-length M98 actions like the Vz.24 and Kar.98k (like bolt bodies, extractors, firing pins, stocks, barrels). Functionally they are the same.

>>33245475
>How do mausers feel to shoot compared to something like a nugget?
Subjective. 8x57mmIS CAN be more powerful than 7.62x54mmR depending on the loadings (S-Patrone is certainly more powerful than LPS-Ball). To me they all feel about the same.

Very boring and tiresome.

But for recoil, it's a broad question. I'll assume you mean a k98k or m24/47 or m48. They're roughly equal though 8mm can have a bit more oomph depending on the load you use. Proper form and stance goes a long way to mitigating felt recoil though.

After reading this post, I'm now kind of interested in a "history of Othias's acquisitions" miniseries where you talk about whatever guns you own and how you met a guy who knows a guy, and how you started with a piece of toast that kind of looks like jesus and ended up with the second US trials .45ACP luger.

How are you able to own a house/car/savings on $5k/yr and what kind of job allows you to work so few hours, if you don't mind me asking? I kinda come from a different lifestyle so its alien and really interesting to me.

I'll have this thread open for a while if you get bored if your vidya and want to list.

I keep deferring on that. I tend to think so, but then I think I'll just buy another straight pull swiss rifle instead.

Umm, some highlights were a
Mk V trials for 400, sold $1500
Bought a winchester 97 for $250 at gun show, took home cleaned up, traded for 33/40, sold $800, all same day.
Jinsen assembler rifle for $150, sold like $1500 I think
G24T at pawn for 700, ditched 1200 I think

Stuff like that, then use that money to buy more known things.

I don't want to give away too much of my home life but 3 income, small house, I buy 90's cars for cheap and do the maintenance.

SKS's are really underrated rifles, especially the well-made ones (Russian, East-German, etc).

They're still kinda cheap now for chicoms and yugos, but it wont stay that way forever. Then again, swiss rifles is the same way.

Plus, the SKS is the original fucking /k/ meme gun. Before mosinfagging, back in 07-14ish, everyone and his mother on here was buying a fucking SKS so they can go inna woods.

I dunno, tilting bolt is really cool to me, and SKS's are basically the best quality tier of Soviet weaponry, alongside prewar SVTs and Makarovs. I feel like during those eras was the only time Russia wasnt hurting for weapons or money or ça fait and so actually made them with pride instead of "EH, RIFLE IS FINE TOVARICH" tier.

Meanwhile, swiss rifles are, well, swiss.

It looks like its made by izhevsk judging from the placement. The stamp is really faded and could barely see the outline of half a triangle

I want one in the wrap and I also want to get one that's still in used WW2 battlescarred condition. Fuck.

Damn, thats some fancy shit. Yeah, I used to pick up a lot of unknown stuff from shows on the cheap, but the milsurp market dried up, everyone at shows is just FFLs peddling ARs nowadays. I go on gb nowadays mostly, and people know what they're getting if you do, for the most part.

I can definitely get on board the 90s cars lifestyle. I know I'm kinda prying, but whats the budget range for homes in your area? I'm in the ~750k range here, I'm on a single income, so its really different and interesting to me.
