Early MCLOS ATGMs often had the option for deported control panels, where the shooter would sit a few hundered meters away from the missiles so he wouldn't get blown to smithereens by return fire.

How come modern ATGMs don't offer that option anymore?
I only see system where the control post and the missile are together; missile batteries laid in ambush seems to have disappeared entirely.
Or is it just a feature that's not advertised?

Kornet-D can be.

It's much harder to direct the missile accurately from anywhere not behind it.
>>
>>33227750
With semi actives, you need the launcher to see the missile's rear to direct it correctly. If you are 20-30 meters away, you will also not see the exact path the missile is taking so it will be more inaccurate.
With MCLOS, you already have bad accuracy potential.

Cold war ended before modern tech could be incorporated into ATGM's

Obviously things could be much much better
TOW is an old af missile design
>>
Because if you have to go somewhere to set up a missile why the fuck not just fire it from that position anyway.

TOW has a pretty awesome sight though...

Neat, thanks.

Would this still be an issue with NLOS missiles like the Javelin?
>>
Seperated control was to avoid being targetted by the launch signature while having to stay in location and guide the missile.
Now with softlaunch and fire-forget, you can shoot and scoot
>>
>>33230684
Javelin isn't NLOS, you still need to lock on to the target
>>
>>33229628
Thats just not true, the TOW launcher was replaced with the modernized SABER system, and recieved 2 new missile designs with increased range and improved warhead configurations. It has a wireless radio controlled version and a fire and forget package on the way.

Everyone just calls them TOWs because they are Tube launched Optically tracked Wire guided munitions. TOW refers to a weapons type, not a specific weapon. There have been about a dozen TOW variants over the decades and our systems just got a new digital target identification upgrade thats pretty sweet.

That NLOS bullshit started on future weapons was unbearable.

Firing javelins was my JOB, it was very clear he had no fuckin idea what he was talking about and just made shit up.

It is a line of sight weapon, as it is optically tracked you must be able to obtain a very clear sight picture prior to firing.

And as for the "it shoots straight up in the air!" Bit, it doesnt. That would be a waste of fuel and require a bigger engine thus more weight.

A tank is max 3 meters tall, the elevation the missile has to gain to hit the top of a tank is not very much. They fly upwards at a pretty shallow angle, no more than it takes to get above the tank.

They got a lot of problems too, like how if you prime the missile to begin targeting its only good for 4 minutes, then the ordinances internal battery dies and it becomes intert, so if you aim at something then do fire you still expended a missile anyways as there is no way to turn it off once its been activated.

They also sometimes eject the liquid argon battery cooling unit out the side instead of firing when you pull the trigger.

Pretty much every time you do anything with a javelin it costs a hundren grand, even when you dont fire it.

Ukraine has some remote TOWs in use right now in Donbass.

5 soldiers are less expensive than the NRE to make it remote controlled. t. engineer

Doesnt mean that he wasnt just being used as propaganda fodder.

Most of the weapons systems he covered ended up not getting used or were exported to other nation's armories.

I dont know enough abput them to confirm what he had to say about them, but pretty much everything he said about the jav was wrong or simplified to the point where it wasnt accurate.

Like saying it was designed to kill the tank crews with spalling. Its designed to detonate fuel and ammo via traumatic overpressure.

And his description of how its targeting and guidance works was pretty much technobabble word-salad.

Its very simple, you line up a good sight picture inside some brackets, the sight captures a photo of everything inside the brackets, then uploads it to the missile. The camera in the nose of the missile stays locked on the target and compares every single frame of the video feed to the original image.

If the comparison changes then the target has moved, a computer which calculates the move adjusts the missiles flight path accordingly.

Theres no "target lock" or anything like that, you set up an image, the missiles ability to track the target is only as good as the picture you give it.

So it takes a LOT of skill to get a good hit on a moving target. If the image is too blurry, or there is a tree branch or debris included in the brackets then its not going to track the target properly.

If the image doesnt have the contrast adjusted right, or there is too much IR clutter (like youd run into on a hot day in the desert) tracking is likewise effected.

He made it sound like some sort of miracle space magic boom-tube you can just point in the general direction of an enemy and never miss.

Its a LOT more work than that, and a LOT less reliable than that.
