Hello, I am looking to own my first non restricted gun. I am in Canada so it has to meet those requirements. I am looking to have fun at the range, and won't be hunting. I heard 22 cal has cheap ammunition and is a good start. Any specific make/models you can recommend; good bang for the buck would be ideal. I do like the look of the assault type but open to opinions from more seasoned people. Thanks

GM6 Lynx
Have fun.
$15,000? too rich for my blood
Ruger 10/22 is a really popular 22lr rifle. It has a huge aftermarket too.

A .22LR rifle like a Ruger 10/22 is a very solid choice for a starter, it's easy to shoot, ammo is cheap, and since it's a rimfire rifle, you're allowed to have high capacity magazines like 25rd curved mags and 50rd drums (though be aware that most drums for the 10/22 aren't that amazing).
If you want to step up to a big boy caliber rifle later, I would recommend a nice old military rifle like an Enfield in .303 or a Steyr Mannlicher in 8x56mmR

Oh yeah, I should add that you unfortunately cannot get the Ruger BX25 magazines, as Ruger made the poor decision to export the Ruger Charger (the pistol version of the 10/22) to Canada, thus making the BX25 magazine a pistol magazine, and would have to be pinned to 10 rounds to be legal.
You will have to settle for Butler Creek and Volquartsen (which is good quality).

I'm not sure about Canadian laws, but don't you guys get dirt cheap Norinco up there?
Pls give cheap SKS and M1

Marlin 795
Its a $200 semi auto .22 plinker.
Nice heavy barrel.
You can 25 round mags for it too. Just make sure you use quality ammo i.e. only use CCI Standard or MiniMags if you dont want feeding issues.

I thought the RCMP ruled all these mags illegal that hold over 10 rounds. Did I miss something?
i think the Cdn law is max is 5 rounds if i'm not mistaken. Thanks guys keep them coming.

Limited to 5 for centerfire semi auto firearms.
Rimfire no limits.
Get a 795.

SKS, T97, Vz.58, Norc M305, AR180b, the list goes on. It all depends what appeals to you, what you want to spend, and what you want to use it for.

But it's AIDS

get a fucking SKS
.22 is literally for children

I had one, was decent, minus it being for underfed Chink conscripts. LOP was too short for me.

This. I never really enjoyed .22, except out of pic related.
