11.5"ish AR would be great for HD. But in "shtf", you'd probably want versatility. An SBR is gonna lose velocity quicker than a carbine or rifle, making it much more difficult to hit longer shots (why would you, I dunno. just good to have that option.) so personally, 14.5" does it for me
