This.
Nothing makes me cry like Stalingrad. There are countless parallels I found between german memoirs and this movie. Just about everything that was shown in the movie, can be read in a book. Including that scene where the T-34 drives over the fox hole with a German in it and starts churning the dirt to bury him alive.

Das Boot was pretty incredible too. I can't wait for the new Das Boot coming out in 2018.

>>33227048
Dien Bien Phu acting is a bit lacking. But since it's basically an autobiography, it still has a lot of qualities. Schoendoerffer's commentary enhances the scenes in an incredible manner.
317th platoon is incredible. I wouldn't recommend it for its action, but it's as humane as a movie can get.

I heard good things about the Anderson platoon by the same director, too.

Not all germans were nazis.
>Before Hitler seized power (in 1933) only 850,000 out of 66 million Germans were card-carrying Nazis. After the Nazi seizure of power, there was a big surge in membership. At its peak, Party membership reached 8 million out of 80 million Germans in 'Greater Germany' or about ten percent of the population.
>about 10% of germans were nazis

Not defending nazis at all, just saying not all germans were nazis. When you have a president that's willing to bend rights and break rules people get excited. Look at trump. Not comparing him to hitler but he definitely is in the same seat of power.

It's all grey area anon. There were no good guys or bad guys necessarily. Lots of good men died on both sides for what? To ultimately cave to pressure from communists? Boy we sure did liberate Europe didn't we...
>>
>>33227935
I seriously seriously doubt that there were German motorized columns who roamed the countryside and exterminated entire villages for no reason.
Not to mention the movie portrays the communist partisans as some sort of saints when in reality they were nothing more than Moscow controlled terrorists who robed villages of supplies.

>inb4 Einsatzgruppen

Einsatzgruppen were anti partisan units that dealt with partisans and communists. They did not exterminate people just for the sake of it
>>
>>33227935
>Yeah i'm sure the people who vote one way are entirely political and base their life around party promises that included nothing about killing groups or starting a war.
It's no less reliable than Nazi party membership post 1933, you pretty much had to join if you wanted a government job or to be successful in industry after they took over.
>>
>>33227979
>in one sentence says there was no way there were german groups who exterminated villages
>in another sentence says there were partisans that were really terrorists who attacked villages and robbed them
So what's the difference? They both did this shit, regardless of what your opinion is. Every side is shitty in war.
>>
>>33227976
>Thats right theres always a good guy and a bad guy. We were the good guys I swear.
>It's all grey area anon. There were no good guys or bad guys necessarily.
I think you might be thinking of WWI, where the lines were blurred and alot of people from all sides died seemingly for nothing. In WWII however, the Nazis actually systematically exterminated 6+ million people, so yeah that kinda paints them as the "Bad guys". I don't seem to recall the part of WWII when America committed such an atrocity.

Not trying to turn this into a holocaust thread, but I think you've got the wrong idea of what Germans were fighting for. It was ultimately just expansion and "Deutschland über alles" ideals. In other words, it was typical imperialism upon the Western World (cause they were smart and brave enough to try it on white people instead of spear chuckers). The typical Wehrmacht soldier didn't give two shits about or know about the Holocaust.

Or I'm just being b8ed like an idiot...

Nazi ideology was explicitly racial when it came to slavs, it was quite clearly genocidal. Now how many of the actual troops knew/supported such ideals is less clear (I suspect that number is much smaller) but it was certainly the thinking at the top.

Racism is defined by thinking that any race is inferior OR superior. I'm not arguing whether or not they were racist (nor am I even saying that's inherently wrong), and obviously they sought to kill and conquer. But that's any act of imperialism (which all large Western nations are guilty of in recent history). I'm making the point that the industrialized genocide and acts of torture of the Holocaust itself were not a part of the front line culture and mostly removed from the population's eyes.
>>

Fair enough though I'd still say their position on the slavs is somewhat more extreme than most. This was made clear from the start for anyone who wanted to look into it (Mein Kampf etc), I doubt many Germans did but it was out there.
> I'm making the point that the industrialized genocide and acts of torture of the Holocaust itself were not a part of the front line culture and mostly removed from the population's eyes.
Also fair enough, in fact it's worth noting also that the Holocaust in terms of actually killing jews was not the original plan, deportation was fine until the war made that impractical. I wouldn't expect anyone to have known it would happen in advance.
>>
>>33225906
This would probably be my choice for best war movie. Not only almost all actors are incredible, especially the german actors with their memorable performances, like Paul Hartmann, Heinz Reincke, Richard Münch and Hans Christian Blech, but it also have one of the most interesting and yet forgotten battle scenes in movies; that battle where the french forces are attacking a village where the germans entrenched themselves in a cassino. The whole first section of that battle is filmed in a continuos tracking shot, following the french soldiers advancing through the streets.

>>33227058
Funny fact: there is also a soviet Stalingrad movie from 1949, another one made in 1990, and an west german film about the battle made in 1958.
>>
>>33228381
>I think you might be thinking of WWI
No I'm talking about world war II dingus. You missed my point and I think you should try harder to objectively look at world war II. Do you honestly believe we went their to save the 6 gorillion jews only to cave in to the Soviets demands? Or could it be just maybe we had our own motives and the British certainly had theirs but unfortunately for them Chruchill was too busy grandstanding and got played by Stalin. Could it be more likely that they needed a reason to justify involvement in a war far away from home? Let me ask you what did we actually accomplish in Europe when it was all said and done? Sure some countries got liberated but the war continued only no shots were fired. What did all those Americans die for?

I'm not trying to disrespect or diminish our veterans sacrifices in the west. I'm criticizing those that sent them there in the first place especially including Hitler only to had over a liberated Europe to the soviets. They didn't even know about the camps until the Soviets told them. Also, even the holocaust museum has revised the 6 million number. The claims at Auschwitz dropped by 2.5 million.

Really activates my almonds.

The two worst things in a war movie is romance and excessive CGI.

A little romance is fine, like in Das Boot. The French girl and that young watch officer. But the movie isn't molded around them.

And I understand that CGI gives them the ability to do so much more. However, when they shoot the whole movie in front of a green screen, it's kinda like they are too lazy to go outside and do real shit.

That's why movies like Pearl Harbor and Red Tails are Hollywood trash.

Heartbreak Ridge was a crap movie. Clint Eastwood simpering around his ex took more of the movie's length than the military stuff, and the gushy ending belonged in a country song.

And the whole 'training a defunct group of Rangers' was a story you could get away with before Platoon, Apocalypse Now! and Hamburger Hill. By that standard, Heartbreak Ridge is something better placed with New Prince In Bel Air.

That's not really a war movie. It's a POW movie. But it does that wonderfully.
>>
>>33229907

It is an interesting movie in that it portrays one specific war period, and accurately. But sitting down hoping to see some actual action is unfortunately not happening.

I have similar feelings about Full Metal Jacket. I wanted to see a Vietnam movie, not a US Marines Training Camp movie.

I do like When Trumpets Fade. The tension between the characters, the realism of the wounds, the fatalism, it all worked well. The only bit I groan at is the chubby guy. How could they include someone in a setting of leanness and meanness who seem to have eaten all the section's rations the last two weeks? How did he make it to the front line?

The days long duel between the two snipers is a historical fact, one being Zaitsev and the other being a german colonel iirc. So is the battle for Stalingrad. Everything else is in the 'might have happened' category.

I love the movie. Dirty front pig sex and all.
>>
>>33231664

I am a big fan of Clint, both as actor and as director. That does not have to mean that all he ever touched became gold. Fact is, some of it stinks. But he was great in Kellys Heroes and in Where Eagles Dare and in Black Heart White Hunter, and Letters Of Iwo Jima and Flags Of Our Fathers were heavyweights.
>>
>>33228172
>So what's the difference?

This has to be bait.

>They both did this shit, regardless of what your opinion is.
No they did not. The Germans clearly did not form motorized columns for the sole purpose of exterminating innocent civilians

Both sides were guilty of war crimes that is certain but the movie grossly exaggerates the German crimes and portraits the russian partisans as some sort of righteous martyrs.
>>
>>33231698
Iirc, there is many scepticism about the existence of Ed Harris character, Major König, which there is no trace in the german military records. Many people think that Zaitsev invented the whole episode.
>>
>>33231657

It is a great movie. Very patriotic stuff, too. I remember when the events actually took place; the only part that reached us at the time was the part where American soldiers' corpses were dragged through the street. It's a good action movie but it never really addressed why the UN were there in the first place, never mind the US. And by the movie you'd think there was only one Somalian war lord in town.
>>
The Odd Angry Shot. Australian SAS in Vietnam. Awesome, FALs in the jungle.
>>
>>33231805

I am not going to be flat out certain about that one, either way. Maybe he, or more likely the propaganda ministry, made the whole thing up. Maybe the colonel was just some lieutenant. I THINK my original source for this was Anthony Beevers book, beside Zaitsevs diary which I read many years later. But I think we can agree that Stalingrad saw a considerable number of snipers on both sides.

I see a lot of war movies because they tell history. Some fiction leeway must be allowed because history rarely lets one person experience all the key events firsthand. So I can live with less than perfect acting, less than perfect effects and somewhat less than 100% details in what gun models etc are used. What makes me bin a war move is lack of realism in depiction of character (unless it is a comedy), unnecessary cruelty (I did not sit down to watch rapes, blood spraying abortions, skullfucking or an hour of torture) or a heavy political slant. Yes, I know, war is hell. What I pay for is a history lesson and the bit with shooting, endurance and hopefully some honor on all sides of the conflict. I am glad to say that a lot of war movies deliver on this.

Here it is the West German film about Stalingrad: Hunde, Wollt Ihr Ewig Leben? (Dogs Do You Want to Live Forever?) from 1958/59, based in the novel of same name by Fritz Wöss, himself a veteran of the battle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhoIW5B3NAg

Is not the most memorable war movie about Stalingrad, the battles scenes are "okay" and it have a quick throwaway romance subplot, that it is so quick that really does not bother me. But it have a good german cast (like Joachim Hansen, Wolfgang Preiss, Peter Carsten and Richard Münch) and is kind of interesting to see early representations of the battle in German post war culture.

It is definitely way better than "Der Stern von Afrika".

I also liked another movie called The Counterfeiters. It's a story about jews who are enlisted by Nazi Germany to create forced British Pound notes to destabilize the British economy.

It uses the same sort of rising and falling pressure and influence of Nazi Germany as the backdrop.

The Muslim SS did kill a lot of civilians though.

Quite renown for it really

So they were a little bit exterminatety, weren't they.

The Great Escape is a really good movie, but unfortunately, I think his fame ended obscuring other good POW escape movies based in real stories, like The Colditz Story and The One That Got Away.

I had a very hard time believing the story's validity at all.

I can see him being captured by the soviets, but he supposedly just walked out of Stalingrad, over mountains, and got captured by krauts.

Not sure I know what you refer to. The firefight in the desert was pretty good, for a movie sniper scene any way. The bomb scenes were good in the suspense area. The Iraqis were never portrayed as fools, and the soldiers' honor was intact by the end. What more do you want?

>>33244088

Underrated? Maybe. Underdistributed? Definitely. I have been trying to find a sample of The Bridge for years.
>>
>>33244592

Camera work and acting on that one was tremendous. There was also such an absence of patriotism that it felt like they had been dropped on the moon. Which isn't bad in itself, but it added to an already unmotivated heart of the story. More like 'I don't understand why we are firing at these fine Asian citizens'.
>>
>>33248607

Come now. At Stalingrad there was approx 5 million soldiers on each side. It isn't unreasonable that things may have gotten slightly out of order at times.

Here's a movie I recommend: The Unknown Soldier, finnish film from 1955. Following a finnish machine gun company during the Continuation War against the Soviets. The cast of characters of the company is full of diverse types, but they are all equal in one aspect: They are a unsubordinated, undisciplined and unrespectful bunch, who generally back talk and complains to and their superior officers for any stupid shit .

I have both. Tora Tora Tora is the better historical drama, even if the air filming sucks as most war movies of that period do. And there's a lot less cringe too. And compared to 'Pearl Harbour' it is a masterpiece.
>>
>>33249214

Yay, I need to find a sample of that one. Finnish war movies rule. I have Ital-Hantala and The Winter War already and they are superb at seeing war from the soldier's viewpoint.

Anything compared to Pearl Harbour is a masterpiece.

this is my vote

>4000 zulu "warriors" with backup from 3000+ other tribes men (many of which had guns)
>140 brits ans 4 civvies
>17 brits killed, decisive british victory, over 1000 blacks killed or injured

If youre wondering what kind of a fortress the brits were in, it was a feild hospital biult around a local chapel

And yes its based on true events

they had previously raided a traveling army with supplies

>the Zulu army looted the camp at iSandlwana, capturing hundreds of modern British Martini-Henry rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition. Then, at Rorke’s Drift later that same day, the Zulus used these very rifles against the British garrison. ’That’s a bitter pill,’ says Michael Caine in that movie; ’Our own damn rifles!’

He wasnt using a line form the movie as his evidence, the line was just at the end of that sentence

Maybe you should do as >>33253172 says and learn some fucking history you scrub, its not like Rourkes Drift is some obscure battle
>>
>>33253165

I have only seen parts of the movie, as yet. But I have read some about Rorke's Drift and I have not found substantive reference to zulu use of Martini-Henrys.

From Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Rorke%27s_Drift

Most Zulu warriors were armed with an assegai (short spear) and a shield made of cowhide.[19] The Zulu army drilled in the personal and tactical use and coordination of this weapon. Some Zulus also had old muskets and antiquated rifles, though their marksmanship training was poor, and the quality and supply of powder and shot was dreadful.[20]

The Zulu attitude towards firearms was that: "The generality of Zulu warriors, however, would not have firearms – the arms of a coward, as they said, for they enable the poltroon to kill the brave without awaiting his attack."[21] Even though their fire was not accurate, it was responsible for five of the seventeen British deaths at Rorke's Drift.[22][23]"

So, five out of 140. Hardly a gamechanger, was it?
