Just got the Mora Companions and the Opinel No.9 (carbon) in today. Amazingly I've never handeled either before today (well got the blue one a few days ago), they are amazing for sub $15, I can see why so many people rave about them. I was not impressed with the edge on the Openil, but it took a scary sharp, actually hair whittling edge, after 10 minutes on my Wicked Edge.

I've had the Combat Troodon on my list a while, but I'm not ready to swallow that price yet. Currently my only OTF is a Lightning, just for the sake of having an OTF.

How long you been collecting?

Since 1993. Met Tony when he was first starting out.
(Microtech didn't exist back then, but Tony was making prototypes so he could gain the needed capital to start producing)
OTF blades aren't for everyone. Give the lightning a try and see if you like it.

Yeah I've had the lighting a few years now. I like it, just as something to play with around the house, but I don't carry it, mostly because of legality, and also because the Lightning is a pretty crap knife.

I like the Combat Trodon in particular because it's the largest double action in my realistic price range, and if I'm going to get something I can't carry, might as well go big.

My problem is I have too many knives on my want list ranging from $45-$1,500. All different types and brands, I'm not nearly as focused of a collector as you.
>>
>>33223916
Would you recommend the Troodon or the UTX-85? I'm looking to get a Microtech in that size range (3~3.25 inch blade) and those two are the options I have. The Troodon is a lot more expensive, but what's the merit of both?

If I know I'm going to be doing rough work, I don't grab an expensive knife in the morning, my go to beater is my Cold Steel Code4.

So admittedly, I do carry all my knives, but my more expensive ones don't get hard use, just general EDC stuff like opening boxes, cutting rope, zip ties, ect...They do get dirty, like pic related. Some times I'll carry a beater in my back pocket. To this effect, you could argue that my higher end knives are pocket jewelry.

Then again, relatively speaking I don't have that high end of knives, $240. My Spyderco Tuff is worth a lot more right now, but I don't think I'll ever sell it.

Yeah, even though they are a meme, honestly most of their knives are good if not great. For the $50-$100 range I most often recommend the Code4. I would just stay away from their 4116 steel knives, most of their swords are worth avoiding, and their machetes and axes are good if you put some work into them.

I own quite a few Cold Steel's, one of the first companies I got into.

Oh sorry, missed the "new", bit distracted with some physics work.

The only thing that really catches my eye this year is the Drop Frog stuff, it looks promising, but I'm curious about the edge retention, all the folding knives look good from a utility stand point, but they look ugly to me.

All the Cold Steels on my list are nothing too new, I may give the MAA Arming Sword a shot, I'm hesitant though, Cold Steel swords have a bad reputation for lose hilts. Also, I'm hopping they will make a smaller variation of the 4Max one year, I want one, but I'm not spending $300+ on something that's too big for realistic carry... well most the time...

Action is fun/smooth, in/out lockup is tight, up down and side/side have only the tiniest amount of play, but that's a given on any DAOTF. Overall I'm very impressed, this will definitely enter the carry rotation.

So i just bought a zt 0566 in s35vn for 90 bucks and a spyderco native 5 in s35vn for 40 bucks?did i do good?still in the mail while ones off to get acid washed.
>>
>>33232415
Go to dhgate. And search for microtech scarab or ultratech clones.qctually nicely built for about 30-60 bucks in comparison to other knives in the same price range.
>>
>>33232415
For sub $100, there is the Lightning OTF, it has a good action, but it's a crap EDC knife, very bad steel, and it dulls it self with opening and closing. The HK Autos are the cheapest really high quality autos I know of, but they are like $180. Maybe look at Schrade, I know they do some, but I've never looked into them.

What I do is go to BladeHQ and filter through knives, so "OTF", and then by price, "Low to High" and then see what looks good that is in budget, and start reading reviews and comparing materials.

http://www.bladehq.com/cat--Out-The-Front-Automatics--41#perpage:100/sort:price_sort_asc:asc

But first off, why do you want to carry an OTF? On top of them just being a lot more expensive, they are not really great for EDC, even really high end ones can be a bit unreliable, and you have to worry about keeping junk out of the mechanism a lot more than side openers. More so their legality is something to consider depending on where you live, and even if they are legal, people don't think too well of them.

>>33232597
Yeah those are good prices, assuming they are in mostly good condition. Did you buy used?
>>
>>33232740
Well the 0566 is used but still with factory edge, needs a sharpening should from the pictures didnt look too used up since the s35 models were released recently.the native on the other hand belong to some marine who fucked up the edge with a worksharp and scratched the shit out of the finish, hence why i sent it to a guy to acid wash it and resharpen it.nothing is stripped and lock up is solid.

Waist of space? You kidding me? It has helped organize and condense them all (well at lest the folders and most expensive fixed blades) into one place. When you have 35ish folders, some of which over $200, it's hard to keep track of them all when moving them around, and it's best not lose any obviously. Also it makes it a lot easier to pick out a knife every morning.

I use them (see >>33228135) but I don't see a problem with not wanting them to all scratch each other in the bottom of a bag if possible. And it's a hell of a lot easier to travel with this case with a pad lock on it.

I've been carrying my Spyderco Caly 3.5 in ZDP recently. ZDP is an interesting case study in the competing effects of hardness vs carbide volume on apex stability.

In light use the high sharpness edge retention is noticeably better than lower carbide steels at 60-62 HRC, but once you start using it harder you quickly start running into microscopic chipping issues.

I'm currently, possibly, having edge stability issues with my ZT 0770cf in CPM-M4. I've tried, I can't capture it in a picture or a photo, it's even hard to see by eye, only under magnification, and by feel, I notice the belly has a roll about 3/4ths an inch long. It feels too large to be the result of the large carbides not supporting the edge, considering I sharpened at 16 DPS.

I'm going to re-set the edge soon, just have not gotten the chance yet, M4 takes a while to sharpen, and I don't have too much time with course studies. I've just been touching up some of my less wear resistant knives, like my Skylines. Pic related.

have no experience with the carbon mora in particular, but a lot with carbon steel blades in general.

First off, always wipe it on your pants or shirt before sheathing. After you are done using it, for a while, try to wipe it with oil, if you are out and about for more than a day or two, consider bringing a folded up rag that you oiled, to wipe down the knife.

When you get back from your trip/whatever make sure to thoroughly was the blade and get rid of anything stuck on it. And Oil when done.

Pretty much; oil, even spray some in the sheath. If you use it for food, get some mineral oil and use that.

This is not really applicable for just a Mora, but when I am storing or displaying blades (like hanging on a wall) I coat it with Renaissance Wax, it's expensive, but it last forever, and will preserve an untouched blade for literal hundreds of years. Mostly I use it on my swords, but some knives too.
>>
>>33233736
Oh and for rust removal, maybe not pitting, just look up Metal Polish and how to use it, like Flitz or something. Really any thing will do.

You could also consider forcing a patina or coating the blade (blueing it or something), if you want a project that will make it more easy to maintain.

Project knives can be fun, like pic related.
>>
>>33233772
That is quite odd. CPM-M4 should have no issues with apex stability at 16 DPS, and given that it is a high speed steel, it would seem unlikely that the factory edge would be burned.

In my own experience, I haven't had any apex stability issues with CPM-M4 even at a~10 dps edge-bevel angle with a 15 dps micro-bevel, and that includes some deliberately abusive whittling testing and some thick plastic cutting.

I would force a patina on it. A forced thin layer of black oxidization has been helpful for me in keeping the orange kind at bay on my non-stainless knives.

My collection as of now. Waiting on the next batch of UTX-70s to add one.

The real problem is that I don't recall cutting anything that is too hard or with excessive pressure. And I agree, 16DPS should not be a big deal for M4, and more so, after the whole Elmax ordeal, I trust ZT to not be over heating their blades... Seems like a Cliffstamp extra credit question. kek.

When I put a new edge on it, I'll make sure to keep track of how I use it. And I'm going to do the same thing with my Wicked Edge, 16DPS up to 1,600 ceramic, and then 5-3.5 micron strop at 15.5 DPS.

I'll see how mine holds up. I wen't for the stainless, because I know my gf is not going to religiously maintain hers, she just wants something to whittle with around the fire. And I'm not looking for max performance, I've got plenty of fixed blades I'm going to carry more (pic related). Really my Mora is really just to practice Scandi grind sharpening on, now that I'm spending more time free handing on my water stones.

Damn that's a thin edge. What is that primary bevel, like 10 DPS? Very good work. I have a long way to go with my free hand work. I'm very rusty, and I never was supper proficient, most of my work is with set angle set ups.

Very fine collection. I have a feeling that if I were just getting into it now a days, I would just be buying one or two higher end production/mid techs a year. Since I started when I was like 15 though, I've really worked my way up from low end, through mid level, into high end production. For the mean while I seem to be stuck at mid-high production.

Was thinking about picking one of these up to carry around. It seems nice and thin and easy to carry, anyone have any input? I think it'll be easier to carry around than a opinel, because the open seems pretty thick in diameter, even for the small ones.

I am worried about it coming open in my pocket and poking me and/or slicing up my pants, is this a valid concern or is it held shut pretty securely? I know it doesn't lock like Opinels do, but I don't think I'd be using it for any serious work.

The Higonokami is another knife on the list of knives "I should have gotten years ago". I don't own a traditional one yet, pic related is a Rock Creek one I have, but considering my current kick, may get one soon.

From what I've heard, they have decent friction from box, so opening is not that much of a worry, but if you plan on using it a lot, it could eventually be pretty lose. A lot of them come with a little leather or fabric sleeve that you can carry them in. If not though, I would get a larger one (3.5ish + blade) and carry it tip down in your change pocket (if your pants has one). This way if it does open, you hopefully will touch the tang or spine and not the edge.

Well, as I'm sure you are aware, KAI is not exactly known for QC'ing their heat treatments very well, so it is at least theoretically possible you could have gotten an HT dud, but you'd have to screw up M4 pretty bad to get that behavior.

It also seems pretty unlikely they could have burned it enough post HT to induce that kind of behavior, as its a high speed steel (otherwise I'd assume burned edge from factory sharpening).

In theory, the most likely answer should be that there was some sort of hard contact that you don't recall at some point. Easiest way to check is to grind the existing edge off and see how it holds up in continued use.

I also tend to run all my EDC knife edge bevels in the ~10 degree per side range with ~20 degree per side microbevels. My EDC usage mostly consists of cardboard, paperboard, food prep, clamshell packaging, consumer grade zip-ties and plastic. That sort of light use allows for very thin blade geometries and very thin edge geometries to maximize cutting performance.

A lot of my production knives have been had their primary grinds thinned out using a Norton Crystolon coarse, in addition to the low edge bevel angles. My custom fixed blades are all lasers at purchase.

Only production knife that was thin enough for my tastes at purchase is my Spydiechef. It was thin like a lean custom fixed blade behind the edge when I got it. The edge bevel is at ~10 dps in pic related.

Force a patina, keep it oiled, clean dry and re oil when used on anything acidic.

Hinderer is awesome. People bitch about not being able to flip it but that's because they don't know how to or they have weak hands. You have to push it in instead of flicking it and it takes a some force.

How do you guys feel about forced patina? Is my mora /ktg/ approved?

I just got mine on the weekend, it's pretty sweet. Super easy to sharpen too, got it as nice as my S110v
That said, mine has a small problem with is grind, the outside steel was showing on one side all the way to the apex, a tiny bit of sharpening fixed that though

It looks cool to me, I may try it on the flats of my Ontario sp-10 once I get the edge geometry the way I want it.

What method did you use to get the patina? How long it take? I've actually never tried it my self.

>>33234526
How thick is the Spydychef above the bevel (what ever distance you measure at). Must be really thin to have that short of a bevel at that angle. Ever since I saw you post it a while ago, I've been considering getting one. Probably would not run it bellow 15dps or so, pretty sure I've said this before, but it's hard to keep good edge alignment while trying to cut a thick zip tie half way in a tractor engine bay.

Hmmm yeah it looks like at lest one of the mm was removed, something like;
>wait until you get a Halo V
Or something like that, that's the only one I know for sure, unless I over looked it.

I wounder why, I did not notice anything inappropriate or out of character about those posts.

On the far left you can see some stains on the mora, I got those after I stuck it blade first into the sand while camping and forgetting to clean it up right after. As the for patina now, I just cut up some regular limes and left the lime juice sit on the blade for a few hours. If you go buy citric acid it'll go a lot faster, but I think you need to be careful not to use too strong of an acid to force the patina. I've heard acorns can be used too, but there aren't any near me.
