Okay, disclaimer: I am a .243 fanatic.

However, I have an objective side that knows .270 is the superior caliber (of the two) to take veritably any game in North America at decent ranges.Doing some durr huntan next season and that could include some out of state stuff. .270 seems like the best caliber to accomplish this

Convince me differently.

>fudd caliber
>muh .223 can kill durr too
need not apply

If all youre doing is hunting deer sized game or anything smaller, it does not matter. If its bigger than deer, go with .270
>>
>>33218617
.270 has a reliable trajectory, and the best energy for recoil tradeoff. Been using it my entire life for deer, my family since the 70s.
>>
>>33218617
308 is cheaper
>>
>>33219322
>and the best energy for recoil tradeoff
Nope, .243 is even better.
.270 got dem external ballistics though
>>
>>33218617
where the fuck can you buy .243? I'm sure it's a great round, but you may as well use something a bit larger but far more prolific.
>>
poor BC due to slow rate of twist.
>>
>>33218617
.243 has a wider range of bullet weights and therefore can be used to hunt a wider range of game. For instance you can hunt fox with a .243, but a .270 would be too much gun. You can hunt elk with a .243
>>
>>33219362
>can
It's different than should.
>>
>>33219373
there is literally no ethical reason not to. tell me why a .243 won't kill an elk dead at 200yards.
>>
>>33219352
.243 is an incredibly common hunting round, it's just a necked down .308. Any wal-mart, sporting goods store, and hardware store around here has multiple brands and bullet options for .243 on the shelves.
>>
>>33219453
What if the elk is wearing body armor?
>>
>>33219502
lol
>>
>>33218617
I've killed deer at roughly 100 yards with a .243. I only shot once. That was the first time I ever killed a deer. I killed an elk with a .270 for my first time from probably only 50-60 yards away and it fell with one shot.

Check this out though, I went with a buddy who had a 300 ultra mag he'd elk hunt with and we came up on a small herd and he saw them first so he picked an animal to go after and took the shot and I shit you not, he fired every round in the gun and took off running down the ridge in the direction of the ridge, stopped and reloaded, then slowly walked down the hill where the elk had appeared to be seizing and flailing about, and he put 3 more rounds into the animal before it stopped moving. He could have missed a lot, who knows. The meat wasn't all torn to shit so I assume he was just a bad shot.

>>
>>33219337
Why so I keep hearing this? 308 is only cheaper if you're buying shit ass milsurp or plinking ammo. Dollar for dollar the hunting ammo is roughly the same across all comparable hunting calibers I.e. 270, 308, 30-06 etc.
>>
>>33218617
.243 over .270 all day. .270 is a over hyped up caliber that doesn't really do anything that great. .280 out performs it for light recoil with great trajectory and 30-06 out performs it for better knock down power. Even 25-06 does better for long range.
>>
>>33219352
i've never not been able to find at least 4 different brands/weights of .243 at any gun store i've been to.

So I guess it doesn't really matter which one of the two you use for either. I grew up Fudd shooting those two rifle cartridges, .22lr and 12ga. I've never had a to shoot an elk or deer more than twice with the .270 or .243. Hope this helps.
>>
>>33219527
I came into hunting late in life. Well after having learned to shoot and handle firearms. My suspicion is there is a large population of hunters who can't shoot for shit and can barely meet minimum marksmanship fundamentals. Basically they learned how to safely operate a rifle and stopped there. Don't get me wrong lots of good marksman out there but it almost feels like the shitty ones are the majority.
>>
>>33218617
6mm Remington is better
>>
>>33219589
I agree.
>>
>>33219339
Guess thats a bit of fudd lore I picked up over the years. I'd have to look at the numbers but without shooting both extensively I would find it hard to compare recoils.
>>
best entry level .243 or .270 gun for a newguns?
>>
>>33219612
A good entry rifle in .243 is a Remington model seven.
>>
>>33219570
I mean, for hunting deer under 300 yards you should be fine with either. Over 300 yards and I might opt for the .270. I never shoot at an animal that's over 300 yards away so, for me at least, either one would be fine. .243 is one of the more popular white tailed deer hunting calibers here in East Texas.

>>33219589
I know several "hunters" who have been using the same 20 round box of ammo for years. They never practice shooting their gun, only sight it in every 5-10 years, and might take a shot at a deer once every other year or so. I also know some hunters who go shooting 2-3 times a month and are excellent shooters.
>>
>>33219484
>>33219558
If you can find it locally, then I find no reason not to use it. I get confused for some kind of antigunner a lot but really I'm just lazy and don't understand why people get into hobbies they can't satisfy locally or choose to satisfy in cost-ineffective ways
>>
>>33219453
OP here, I like the ballistics of .270 but if I recall correctly, .243 is the entry-level caliber in some states, like they won't allow you to hunt with less. So if I just go a little bigger while still common, I still get good trajectory, much better power and commonly available.

I thought of stuff like 7mm, 7mm-08 and even .300 win mag but that might be way overkill and ow my poor shoulder.
>>
>>33219649
Agreed. Generally here in Western Oregon a lot of deer hunting is done off our logging roads so it's very, very steep terrain and you usually have to shoot from the top of one ridge across the draw and to the other Ridge. I usually won't take a shot over 150 yards because it's just too far to pack in the fucking brush here
>>
>>33219612
First deer I ever killed was with a Remington .243
Works just as good on hogs and javelina.
Would like to build ar in .243 ^•^
>>
redpill me on 204 ruger
>>
>>33219697
It all fucking depends what you want to hunt. You wanted a case for the all around best hunting caliber that is not .270.

I'll reiterate what I said the first time: You can hunt a wider range of game with .243 because the caliber offers a wider range of bullet weight. You can hunt anything from Fox all the way up to Elk with it. I have nothing else to day on this.

>>33219770
You obviously don't know 6mm Rem

This is the most sensible thread I have seen on /k ever.

.270 is a great flat shooting and accurate round.

243 is great to but harder on barrels.
>>
>>33219752
Hyper velocity, small caliber varmint round.
