Califag here and first time gun owner. I bought an S&W M&P-15 before the election as a panic buy. So, yeah, probably not the best buy.

What is essential/great idea to get to improve it? Looking for a bit of a budget route. I know I need a strap and improved sights. Any particular strap?

Also, it has a bullet button for mag release as required here. I bought a standard release and the removal tool just for SHTF scenario. However, it doesn't turn. Does that mean it's welded on and I can't actually replace the mag release?

Thanks for any advice.

Just bought my first AR, /k/. I had a $600 budget and went with this:

Upper:
>Radical Firearms 16" 1:7 phosphate upper w/ 12" free float rail (I think they make their own rail?)
>Milspec charging handle
>Premium PSA MP/HP tested BCG
>MBUS sights and a VFG

Lower:
>PSA complete Classic Lower with standard M4 Stock - all milspec

All parts should be in by Friday and I'm looking at $552 for the complete rifle + 1 PMAG.

I also bought 500 rds of X TAC 5.56.

Thoughts? Advice? Can't wait to hit the range!

I plan on learning how to take the upper apart and was able to get that upper for $190 shipped from Atlantic Firearms. I'm a complete noob and scoured YT for vids/reviews on the upper before buying it and was sold when I watch AKOU series of vids on it - the only problem they had was the BCG breaking (which I why I bought a better one).

I chose this upper bc it was free float and affordable. I'm not operater tier, but based on my lurking on K, the only non "quality" part I have is the upper. Seems to me a chrome lined or QPQ barrel/gas system swap and a better rail would put my purchase in a higher quality point.

I might shoot hogs/coyotes with it, but while I learn the platform I plan to sling lead and send paper targets to hell.

"The actual SEAL Recce Guns were in-house guns built by the armorers at NSWDG and with the exception of stocks and pistol grips, we're all configured about the same. I have the build list from them somewhere in my emails, but I'd have to look for it.

Here's a pic of one I took several years ago at a meeting. They've just about all been phased out and have been replaced by 14.5" HK416's, but some guys still use them.

With the exception of the Lilja barrel and muzzle device, if you start with a Mk12 Mod1 parts list, you'll have most of the components for the Recce gun. The B.E. Meyers M249 flash suppressor saw a lot of use, as did AAC M4-2K suppressors and mounts. Scopes were Nightforce 2.5-10x24 or eventually 2.5-10x32.

if you are really going to shoot 800yds+ with grendel I would recommend you to get at least 20" barrel and good scope with at least 20x magnification. a 10-20moa scope mount will be needed. more rigid upper would be better.

iron can be primary for shooting at man size target with avg shooter skill out to 300yds easy 600yds with mad skill and it might take few rounds to hit by adjusting walking the rounds to target if you dont know where to hold and can see where round are hitting dirt or have spotter scope/ a spotter.

but i recommend you try to shoot tight as you can at 100yds then move up to using a optic. optic is breath of fresh air but ironies is too after years with optic by being challenging.
