Hi /k/, my son is 16 going on 17 here in a few months, and I've been wanting to get him a nice little beginners gun. The only issue is, my first gun was a 38 sp revolver when i turned 24, so I have no idea what would be good for him. I figure a .22 lr would be the best caliber. I've been leaning towards a 10/22 or a marlin lever action. Any ideas?

10/22 lever guns are for fudds
>>

I can't speak for the marlin, but the 10/22 is probably the best semi auto .22 rifle out there today, both for it's reliability (as far as .22's go) and it's extremely vast aftermarket scene. Versatile little things. I owned one for a while and I miss it since selling it. I'm honestly gonna pick another one up sometime soon. Great rifle.

10/22 is semi auto

>>33208798
Yeah, it's pretty good unless son has preferences. I've got a 10/22. It's in the dustiest corner somewhere, I only shoot pistols.
>>
>>33208798
Any semi auto .22 is the best starter gun. Cheap to shoot, won't encourage a flinch and will be around for him to give to his son.

More importantly, be sure that he knows that he is responsible for his gun, that means before he ever shoots it he has to read the manual cover to cover, disassemble it, clean it and put it back together on his own.

10/22, lever guns are for fudds

Has he gone out shooting with you before? Hopefully so by now. In which case, I'd certainly skip the .22LR route. Consider a 357 lever-action. A Marlin 1894C would be pretty cool since 38 Special is so cheap. It looks like a fudd gun but it'll surprise you. Load it up with 357 and you can take deer with it.

.38 is like one of the worst plinking cartridges right now.

Yeah because fun plinkers and pure, unadulterated american freedom are only for faggots, right?
>>
>>33208870
Oh? Why?
>>
>>33208820
Not stirring the shit with you anon, just my 2 cents, but i have the 10/22 and i also have a mossberg plinkster that was about $150 cheaper than the 10/22 and its absolutley indestructable. I take it squirrel hunting sometimes and it eats the dirtiest ammo that even rugers wont touch. Not to mention all the shit that gets in the action. The mossberg has a fantastic sloppy action that reminds me of an AKM in a way.
OP, i would highly recommend the plinkster. Theyre cheap and easy and i would have loved it as a first gun.

>>33208955
It's just too expensive for me to feel comfortable to shoot it when 9mm exists, and it isn't even much cheaper than 357.
>>
>>33208798
The Marlin 60 is cheap and pretty fun. It's got a rather unique and interesting loading mechanism too. I quite enjoy mine, though you will need a scope because the iron sights aren't great.
>>
>>33208850
Yea, I take him out with a couple of my buddies to the range every once in a while, plus he's in boy scouts, so he has reasonable experience.
>>
>>33209043
I'd almost say get him a shotgun at that point then. can still get one pretty cheap. Maybe a Mossberg 500 or the classic 870. Got a good kick so he can start getting used to it if he plans to hunt or anything
>>
>>33208820
Yea, im most likely going with the 10/22 with the mannlicher stock. I'll also be getting a slide fire stock for myself.
>>
>>33209064
Only issue there is ammo cost.
>>
>>33209018
It's like $0.30/rd for 38 Special. It's also ridiculously easy to reload. Regardless, it's a blast to plink with even if it is more than 22LR.
>>
>>33209091
True enough, he'll probably want a plinker anyway. As I previously suggested, the Marlin 60 is pretty nice as well. Semi-auto with a tubular magazine.

Ummm??

Why did you wait so late to get him a gun?
>>
>>33208811
Quite NEET.

In response to OP, Henry makes .22 LR lever actions that are very highly regarded.
>>
>>33209122

What's that white ropey thing? Do you manually pump the "cum lube" through the whole device or something?
>>
>>33209535
Had to get the wife on-board.
>>
>>33209689
My mom is an anti gun cunt and I still got a gun for my eighth birthday. You messed up. Buy him a 5.56 AR with a 22 upper.
>>
>>33208798
Depends on what you want and how you shoot. You can't go wrong with a .22 revolver they are fun and cheap to shoot, but a 9mm semi is a great because it's a step up to a more useful caliber and still cheap to shoot. There's a lot of different ways to go. Personally if you know your son will enjoy I'd get him a 357 lever. It's still relatively cheap to shoot, can get him some distance and close range shooting and is just a cool damn gun
>>
Get him a PKM.
