I prefer the lightweight aluminum for speed and followup swings. Wood, however, is easily burned if one must dispose of the weapon or needs to keep warm in a pinch. Don't know much about the poly bats, but if I'm going plastic its going to be a tonfa, not a baseball bat.

You want spikes and ridges going out like 1/2 an inch or so from the round base. Enough that it concentrates the force of the blow into a smaller area yet not long enough to get stuck in anything.
