Hey /k/, I want to know what movies show the worst depictions possible about the war in Afghanistan. Bonus points for movies with retarded firefights.
I'll start with a tough one to beat, the Hurt Locker

friend was in Iraq for 7 months and loved the hurt locker and said it was the most accurate iraq/Afghanistan war movie he'd seen. he never saw combat if that makes a difference. i liked it just fine.

>>33205999
Swear to fuck, the shittiness of this movie went far beyond its pantsonhead depictions of the sandbox. The fact it won Best Picture with its two-dimensional characters, retarded handling of plot narrative, and lackluster combat segments shows that the Academy is completely up its own asshole. The only thing it got right was the tension in disarming IEDs.

I liked Lone Survivor

As for Iraq, Generation kill and, I know its Gulf One, Jarhead captured that "deployed" feeling perfectly IMO.

If it captures that sort of feeling, the movie/series is an instant favorite for me.

The only other movie that does the same for me is The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now(one of my favorites) and Platoon

Anyone else have any suggestions of movies that capture dat "feel"

Read the book, much better. Getting the actual details reveals how confusing and intense the whole thing was. Also the local militias were alot smarter than just some big guy pointing up and going shoot the helicopters! They had back blast ditches dug everywhere so they could shoot their RPG's straight up, and also timed them to turn them into basically Flak cannons.

Sorry mate, we got called out to some US convoy being stopped because their captain found a 'suspicious' looking rock on the road.
It was just a rock
But, she was pretty convinced it was a bomb and wouldn't be told otherwise

>>
>>33211442
Yeah a bit of intelligent initiative once in a while wouldn't have hurt anyone. I mean fuck, even the rear-echelon and reservist units are bombed up with everything from grenade launchers, rockets to mortars and fat chicks in their company. They could have dumped a good old load on an IED and toasted it, kept on moving and not sat there for hours getting cranky because they're being plinked at by cross eyed, 6 fingered, sister fucking Ahmed and his buddies.

We where mostly there to deal with toxins, biologicals and anything super-weird, but the IED/random explosive gig kind of fell in our laps as well. I swear we've 'everything is bomb' by people who really should know better.
>Drink containers
>Irrigation pipes (the most popular)
>Random bits of industrial equipment
>Cardboard fucking boxes
>Tractor tyres
>Car parts

Fair enough if there's reasonable suspicion, but there's an awful lot of garbage in a country with no garbage collectors, that is just garbage
>>
>>33211442
The reason for the waiting is that we try to get any finger prints or any Key ID features off of it and that way we can start tracking who/where it's made

Real combat would mostly look boring on film. A bunch of people shooting at shit they can barley see. Things happening fast, and then nothing changing for a while.

Its almost like movies are for conveying feelings and not being accurate.

Theyre not going to show footage of real people dying. Im not saying this is a good or bad thing, but that is why the camera work sucks and you never see any of the action. Watching real people get wounded and killed is not really allowed on most media outlets.

Then it just got annoying. If I was Muhammad, I would plant random wires and shit every mile or so, we would just die of starvation before our patrol was over.

"Only the dead have seen the war" has a 10 minute scene of a wounded Iraqi chocking on his own blood and then eventually dying. It's pretty gud scene, mang. Overall, the doc was good but not great. The focus was some faggy Australian journalist and he got annoying.

>What exactly is wrong about the depiction of that shit in the movie?

Anyone that loose and fast with their behaviour, I would have clipped their nuts- hard and they would have been very unhappy. If they kept doing it, I wouldn't have to because the rest of their team would have held them down and personally twisted their balls off. Ordinance guys are some of the most professional soldiers (and navy) I've ever worked with in any country, they don't 'bend the rules' so to speak, because that will get them and possibly a lot of other people killed and injured. The other major problems I can remember off the top of my head, (been a few years since I saw it) are that they're running around without an escort and that was a big no-no, when you're lugging around a fair bit of explosives yourself, you're a big target for the enemy who will want it and are prepared to kill you for it. Plus ord specialists aren't exactly a dime a dozen, so any losses are a big impact on the performance of the whole unit.
Somewhat secondary, their communication was fucking rubbish. Back in command, I'd have a whole other team of guys plotting them, where they are, where they're going, if there's any problems ahead or when they're coming back, do they need anything else and how they're going. That might seem like nagging, but they work long hours in a shit environment and they'll grudging admit, at least they know we've got their back 100% and will scramble extra teams/escorts if they're in the shit or go out of comms.

Post invasion Iraq was very challenging compared to Afghan, there seemed to be a lot more people gunning for you, so we had comparatively lot of contacts and anything urban was always a complete shitfest.

>>33215752
>we would just die of starvation before our patrol was over.
They got pretty nasty in Afghan, they'd take a position long enough to cover the whole fucking area in mines, IED's, booby traps and then bug out.
