what does /k/ think about non-modern weaponry?

im finally coming to the end my my education and joining the job market, and im considering threating myself to either an off the shelf sword of some description, an antique 1796 or similar saber, or perhaps some kind of custom made dagger from a good smith.

what kinds of things do you own and want, /k/?
>>
>>33199995
went full weaboo and bought a true katana. i was taking karate and using training with one. in retrospect it wasn't worth the money. as the odds of actually needing a folded steel sword probably not high on the list of possibilities.

I do own an english longbow i bought after hunting with a compound bow and crossbow for a while. I really like going outback and shooting my longbow.
>>
>>33200078
>I do own an english longbow
may i ask what weight?
>>
>>33200097
55lbs i know it's a little wimpy compared to what "pros" do, but i don't plan to go to war with france anytime soon.
>>
>>33200175
well, at the very least itll preserve your joints, but 55lbs really is piss weak tier desu, are there even any historical examples of warbows with that draw weight?
>>
>>33200205
at best hunting was done with lesser than warbow strength, probably still more than what i'm doing.
>>
>>33199995
Made myself a battle axe some time ago, at some point when time becomes available I would like to belt out some kind of Seax or Rondel

>>33200175
>i don't plan to go to war with france anytime soon.
But what if they plan to go to war with you!
Actually heavy-draw recurve bows are fucking awful things so I don't blame you for using a lighter one
>>
>>33200251
The minimal hunting weight for a bow in my state is 40 for deer sized game. Your draw weight is good for elk and other large game.
>>
>>33200297
fuck me, i may work up the balls to take with me when my boys go bow hunting.
>>
>>33200078
>actually needing a folded steel sword probably not high on the list of possibilities.

no but these kids won't be breaking into anymore homes because of one

I'm pretty sure that was a typo and should have been "treating", but I cant help think of the picture of OP, waving a dagger at himself yelling "Graduate? Graduate you fucking pussy? well, look at me, all fucking educated, eh? Am I scared yet?"

Ok, ok, so I'm easily amused.

Have a stiletto made by french smith Dr Fabrice Cognot.

kek, i actually bought one of fabrices little knives, the ones made by folding the tang back on itself to create a handle. its a nice little thing, but smaller than the images made it look.
>>
Don't own anything myself, but I'm typically a fan of shortswords and bastard swords. Maces are bretty gud too.

I'd recommend not getting a custom knife if you intend to actually use it, since you obviously don't want to fuck it up.

Fabrice does his stuff to the right size - most medieval knives are remarkably tiny in the hand. His little folding raven knives in blacked steel and ebonised oak are pretty as hell.

Pic: Anelace or Aunlaz dagger by scottish smith JG Elmslie - grip is only about 3 and a quarter inches on a real one of these.

Well if you haven't noticed all the sword threads lately /k likes bladed weapons.

Currently I have a Lutel Kriegsmesser, Zombie Tools d'Capitan, and CRKT Woods Kangee T-hawk on my list. I'm also some what tempted to give the Cold Steel MAA Arming sword a try, normally their swords are shit tier, but this one seems to have promise as a beater.

>>
>>33200205
You do realize that's a perfectly normal modern hunting weight?
>>
>>33206039
that looks really uncomfy to me.

>>33206367
from what i hear the weight on modern bows is not at all comparable to older bows, especially not warbows.

historically 90lbs is a reletively weak weight for an english longbow, considering they topped out at about 180lbs. were talking bows so powerful your skeleton deformed to compensate for the increased strain on joints as you grew up using them.

>>33205875
im more of a once in a while /k/ poster desu, and these days i barely browse 4chan at all.
>>
>>33206721
Hence modern.

Longbow materials, design and they way the were made inherently weaker. So they made up for it with massive draw weights, that could reach out to hundreds of yards.

Modern hunting takes place under 50 yards, against unarmed targets.

Modern materials, build techniques, lamentations, and designs (recurves), even size(longer bows are easier to draw back, shorter bows transfer more energy into the arrow) can squeeze a lot of power out of lighter draw weights.

You really don't need much poundage at all to pierce flesh, especially human, as long as your packing broadheads.

People think draw weight is all that matters in how "powerful" a bow can be, ans its a big factor, yes but there's so much more to it than that.

That'd be a very large pistol. As the story goes at least the so-called guner's stiletto is to measure things related to cannons. They saw considerable popularity in some Italian city after said city banned the carrying of stilettos for anyone but gunners, resulting in a meteoric rise of self-proclaimed artillerymen there.

>>33206721
>were talking bows so powerful your skeleton deformed to compensate for the increased strain on joints as you grew up using them.

Pretty much any physical activity you do with some regularity will change your skeleton. It adapts to the demands placed upon it, or the absence thereof, just as your muscles and tendons do.

>>33206948
Yeah, apparently you can make an arrow poke out the other side of an elephant with a 90lbs bow. I suspect it'd be quite trivial to fail that task with many 90lbs bows.

Oh, that absolute shit show that used so called "experts" who often seemed to know next to nothing about historical uses and techniques.

What a joke. It was entertaining, but in no way what so ever, definitive, or historically representative of reality. Almost as bad as Gunny Lee on swords.

Let's see here

1: Bhutanese sword, possibly 18th-19th century
2: Mace, Tod's foundry head, DIY oak shaft.
3: Regenyei longsword, custom somewhat in the style of the early 16th century
4: Regenyei training sabre
5: Kris, Surakarta style fittings
6: Saami style knife by Per-Olof Jönestål of Kiruna.
7: Regenyei feder
8: Tozando KA15 iaito
9: Hanwei Practical katana, of some by now quite old generation
10: Swedish cavalry trooper's sabre m/1847
11: Police sabre with Stockholm's coat of arms, mid 19th century.
12: Swedish army fascine knife m/1848
13: Swedish infantry sergeant's sabre m/1899
14: Swedish naval cutlass m/1849 (much the same as the British P1804).
15: Kukri, standard everyday model base with some extra tarting up.
16: Masai seme, probably third quarter of the 20th century.
17: Unknown bits form SE Asia, hilt and blade&scabbard probably don't belong together.

10, 11 and 12 are all designed by a Swedish artillery officer named Johan August Hafström, who obviously had some quite different ideas from most of the rest of the west about what shape a sabre blade should be. I've yet to find anything suggesting what may have inspired him (yataghan, falcata, kukro, splitting an old leaf-blade in half) or if he came up with it all on his own. Sadly there doesn't seem to be much material available on it all even in Swedish.

Not pictures is assorted training things of wood, plastic and leather, as well as another two of Regenyei's (basic single hander and a Trnava light longsword feder).

>>33207197
While I haven't watched more than a scant few seconds, the concept itself doomed that one to being utter shite, and what little I saw of the execution did nothing to save it and everything to further condemn it. Any relationship between what they present and reality would be by pure accident, and that goes for both the background and the calculated results.

A quick look and well, not a terrible lot for sale. Prices don't seem outlandish at least, but the good deals will as always be found by getting lucky at auctions, not buying though a regular store.

I have several bows, mostly recurve, but one compound and one traditional longbow.

I have several reproduction swords, including 2 Crusader Swords and a celtic shortsword.

I'm currently in the process of sketching out the rough design for a custom built, battle-ready sword. No real reason, I just kinda want it, so I'm gonna do it.
