Looking to get my first gun, went to a gun show today. A vendor is offering a DPMS Oracle AR for 500. Should I pull the trigger? Keep in mind I'm a non gun owning fagit so what would you guys recommend for extra gear or would a couple extra mags be fine? Also looked at a 10/22 for 300 maybe that would be a good plinker to start out with.
DPMS is garbage. That particular rifle is double-distilled, concentrated garbage.

What do you recommend for a beginner on a budget?
What is your budget?

Palmetto state armory kit and youtube instructional videos.

0-700 range, 700$ gun would have to blow me away

Can you build/assemble or do you have to buy pre-built?
Once you build your own you will probably never consider buying prebuilt. It makes more sense to build.

I can follow instructions well, I should be able to put one together ok. My plan was to spend a few days with it disassembling and reassembling any AR I bought to get comfortable with the weapon before I took it to the range. What's the skill level in putting a kit together?

why need all bells and whistle, lever gun works fine. kill target dead.

Lots of Marlins at the show. Got to hold a Joslyn Carbine that was produced in the Civil War that was selling for 65k. They had some mint garands that made my dick hard but 1800 for a first gun purchase is ridiculous. Carbines we're going for 1200.

Just basic mechanical skills. Familiarity with tools in general. If you can change the brakes on a car you can build an AR.
Aero precision lower or blem PSA lower. $50.00
Barrel: PSA FN CHF ultralightweight midlength. $225.00
ALG QMS lower parts kit. $80.00
PSA premium BCG. $80.00
B5 Bravo stock and handguard. $85.00
DD rear sight. $70.00
BCM gunfighter grip. $26.00
BCM gunfighter mod 4 charging handle. $50.00
A2 flash supressor. $8.00
BCM blem upper receiver. $50.00
QD endplate. $25.00
Milspec receiver extension, buffer, and spring. $60.00
Shopped the sales, so didn't pay the above retail values. Spent around $700-$750. Put together in about 45 minutes. The tools you need to put it together are tools you need to have anyway to maintain and work on your rifle.
With a safe full of ARs of equal or higher value, this is the one I go to first. It is dripping with KISS quality and you can feel it when you hold and shoot it. My favorite AR. Too bad I built it for the wife and it's hers.

you can by a 336 for 400 buckaroos NIB
Build a PSA off of an upper and lower half. The blemished ones are perfectly fine. Anything other than PTAC will do you just fine. Alternatively, you can buy a M&P Sport II online and have it transfered to a local shop; those are great quality & value rifles as well.
If you want a Marlin lever gun, stay away from ~2010-2014 production years. Before or after is fine.

A Remlin? No thanks.
A real Marlin 336 is always something nice to have though.
>>33197913
How long have you been shooting OP? Just curious.
But if you want a rifle get an m&p 15 brand new. You can find them for around that price and brand new. I love mine.

>>33198654
That's fantastic. Do you have any info about building a m16a2 from kit parts? What about a build in the 500 range so I can spend extra on mags, a nice case and quality ammo?
>>33198732
Haven't shot since I was a kid in the country doing everything wrong ("want to see my dads guns?"). So about 15 years. I'm looking to start with a really user friendly weapon, a kind of get off work early and go to the range kind of hobby shooting.
>>33198732
Opinion on the ruger ar556? That was 630 on sale at the show, felt less basic than the Oracle but 500 seemed like a steal
>>33198739
16" barrel on carbine gas = why?
Those barrels look to be gov't profile or even hbars. Yuk.
Better than DPMS, but still meh.
>>33198860
what do you want out of 500 dollars pre built man
>>33198860
because any shorter would be an SBR?

You got me there.
A pre-built is always going to save the bucks somewhere.

>>33199001
I'm sorry, are we talking about revolvers here?
>>33198745
Never built an A2.
You could save on the barrel and get something cheaper. I wouldn't, but you could. A good case doesn't cost much more than $25 - $35 and magazines are only $8.00 or so each.
>>33199072
Not him but if you really want to be cheap OP, you can get a case on craigslist or armslist for like 10 bucks. That's what I did.
