Can someone explain what would happen if a railgun round hit something like a ship?

Would it not just overpenetrate it and do nothing except create a few small holes?

It fragments and tumbles, like all military rounds do.

Stop talking about this shit. It's already scrapped.

Ok then cocksucker, what would happen if a magnetically accelerated projectile with the specifics outlined in the project for such weapon were to hit a ship? Asking for interest in the field of ballistics.

The cavitation and hot plasma wake (dont know what its really called, but a round going that speed would superheat the air around it) would do some damage. If the projectile was hard, then it would eventually shatter which would be like a small IED going off in terms of fragmentation, considering the mach 7 speeds.
>>
It would be extremely painful
>>
Shot placement is all that matters. You just have to poke holes in the vitals.

Cant they be loaded with explosives?

Rounds they planned on testing at Wallops Island.
>Inert, which would contain no explosives and would be used to test guidance and control.

>Kinetic energy dispensing variant, which would be used against air targets. This variant would contain 0.2 pound (0.1 kilogram) of explosives to burst the casing of the projectile and dispense tungsten pellets.

>High-explosive variant, which would contain 2 pounds (0.9 kilogram) of explosives. High explosive projectiles would be used against water surface targets and are intended to burst and fragment just prior to striking the target.

if the ship was solid metal very bad things would happen. if it has thin walls the projectile would go right through.

Since a projectile would be shot at a high arc, it would go through the deck and exit the bottom of the hull. Since the sea water isn't compressible, the exit hole would be larger than the entrance hole due to more transfer of energy in a larger time period.

>Cant they be loaded with explosives?
Yes but the payload is small. Dispersing tungsten pellets just before impact is better. It works like a giant armor piercing shotgun.

The worst thing about being hit by a railgun is that if one hits there's probably another five or more on the way in the next 60 seconds. Since the projectiles are small and railgun rate of fire is surprisingly high you can afford to fire bursts.

>>33201549
They can be steered like any missile, you could probably send a solid one lengthways through the entire ship

Damn didn't realize they had built a real testbed!

Apparently not.
>>
Don't know shit about railguns, but when when kinetic energy exceeds the force holding the round together, it will explode.

So it will penetrate or detonate, depending on velocity and composition.

>when when kinetic energy exceeds the force holding the round together, it will explode.

That's some interesting physics considering the maximum kinetic energy is when the round leaves the barrel.
