Ian is too good for TV.
His father appeared on Tales of the Gun a few times to talk about Japanese stuff, but that was a long time ago when the channel still showed history.
It's been years since Mail Call, Dogfights, Battle 360 America, Mankind, and WW2 in HD,etc.
Aside from Forged in Fire there's nothing even military related. They don't even do reruns anymore, just retarded staged pawn or restoration shows that got old after the first season.

>>

>Forged in Fire

I love that show. I also like watching the YouTube videos of people who have been on. One guy said it's 5000 degrees because of the ovens, can't think of what the forge thing is called, and they also turn on TV lights and turn all fans and air conditioners off so it doesn't effect the sound. That's why those guys overheat.
>>
>>33185984
What, about Ian's father?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6peJ0ur4jY
3:30min in. He's an expert on Japanese firearms. Ian has even talked to him a few times for Forgotten Weapons.
>>
>>33185939

For real. I saw a slime-ball in NYC trademark a company name and website that had been in use for over a decade by a client in the mid west.

But since said slime-ball got the trademark first, court had to side with him. So now he gets the company name and traffic after my client had to change their DNS server name.

Wish my client had just purchased the TM.
>>
>>33186016
I like watching the process of that stuff. Makes me want to run out and get some metal, create a forge with some gas torches and bricks, and then start whacking shit with a hammer to make a blade. It looks fun.
Until I inevitably hurt myself horrifically.

This kind of reminds me of a channel I used to like called G4, then later G4/TechTV. It was all about video games and stuff, but almost concurrently to this, it turned to shit. They started just playing Cops reruns all the time. So is it just the natural progression of cable channels to get worse and worse?

Ian's post actually points this out.
>>
>>33186963
it was peak mid 2000s mang

remember getting hype for x-plays MGS3 review, seeing interesting shit on cinematech and watching them fail at esports on tv was great.
>>
>>33186952
That whole thing was baffling
the channel got popular because of video game/electronic/nerd shit and was only climbing
Then retard producers stuck with old mindsets and business tactics started putting in normie retard shit in order to appeal to wider audience.
Whoops who would've thought if you did that your views and rating start to plummet. I guess no one really likes video game/tech shit then.

Guess it wouldn't have matter anyways since the targeted demographic watches stuff online and streaming services now so unless they adapted to that then they would've probably tanked eventually anyways
>>
>>33186522
I too wish the History channel was actually history more often, but I do enjoy the Ancient Aliens bullshit. It's pretty funny.
>>
>>33187105
This. The fates of Tech TV and G4 were unfortunate. I remember when we first got cable in like 2000 I would watch those and the anime channel (we had Time Warner) regularly. Sometimes I wish I could be 13 again but then I remember that it sucked ass.

>>
>>33186952
>>33186963
The original TechTV was good; it had useful information all the time, even if it did feel almost more like a public access channel.

Then G4 bought them out, fired just about everybody except Morgan Webb, and brought in their already-existing staff of young hipsters with foul mouths to do things like AotS.

Shockingly, they didn't get rich doing that, and wound up getting bought out by Esquire or something so that they could shut down the whole network and use the transponder for the metrosexual (I Am Not Making This Up(tm)) channel they thought would make *them* rich.

I have no idea who legally owns what used to be TechTV or its transmission rights these days.

None of the actual history programs are produced by History Channel.

It's not quite the same, but something you can learn is proper filing. A lot safer and cheaper than building a forge, and it's a really handy skill to have. I know that the old British gunsmiths started their apprentices off learning how to file properly.

I suppose the downside is that you'll spend the rest of your life noticing bad filework and cheap finishes.

Cops is a popular show for networks to run because:

>there are a ton of episodes available
>IIRC, it's not an expensive property to obtain for syndication
>it does pretty well because people like watching shit like that

Channels start out well, then try doing too much, then they falter, then it dies. Channels that do well are ones that have a niche, like El Ray.

>air old TV shows like Miami Vice and Airwolf during the day.
>Air a bunch of old campy movies that hipsters love
>have some newer movies here and there (Arnold's 6th Day is airing now)
>sprinkle it with some original content here and there but don't overdo it

Other channels have popped up now that air nothing but old B&W shows all day. Popular with hipsters and old folks, plus you'd imagine syndication rights for some old 50's Western show that wasn't Gunsmoke or Cheyenne ain't too expensive.

My father got contacted to do some stuff for the history channel coming in as a subject expert, speak on camera in length about it. They basically wanted him to do it for free - travel covered and nominal pay for time - and told him he should be happy with it because publicity.

But really if you have some extremely obscure knowledge in a rather mundane historical event, publicity don't mean shit. Esp. when he'd already been on the history channel in the 90s, back before they were shit.

UFO files was fun. So were the occasional Bermuda triangle shows. They were rare, different, and usually had good stories. They generally didn't speculate much, just ran video and had people with shakey cameras tell stories. Ancient Aliens is nothing BUT speculation, and by a summer blockbuster trailer narrator at that. The more bullshit connections are made, the harder it is to think "what if" and that's no fun.

Aren't they trying to bring back Mythbusters? The guy from Nerdist was doing some Host Search series or something?

Skeptical anyway - the last few seasons of MB were pretty mediocre. To much focus on "look at this cool shot" and less on the process and science. Felt like they got the production teams from the other shit to work on it.

On two fronts. One is as a competition build show, in the junkyard wars variety as I understand. That's the discovery network followup. Fun, but not the same thing. The building is there though, and in my opinion that was one of the more important parts.

Secondly, amazon or netflix or someone is bringing back the old build team in a show much closer to mythbusters called the White Rabbit Project.

Normally I'd be cautiously optimistic about Discovery's solution, but the state of the network in recent years has left me more skeptical. I'm pretty excited for White Rabbit Project. As much as I love mythbusters, I think it's probably for the best. There's plenty more material out there, but it's time to approach from some different angles to capture it. I'm also happy not to have to associate mythbusters with the rest of that travesty. It was a real gem, especially for a serial show.

Nostalgia from another era of documentary programming found on a /wsg/ thread. Not /k/ specifically, but in that old style none the less. Hard to believe it's almost a decade old:

he does some other stuff on the side too.
he had to sign an NDA so he can't talk about it but he consulted for Battlefield 1 along with the guy from c and arsenal
he also works for armament research which does some consulting work as well, not exactly sure in what capacity.
He lives off grid in a self built house so his expenses are very minimal I think.
The 5k+ pledged on his patreon doesn't hurt either.

Begs for money on the internet for both FW and Inrange.
Seems to work as a consultant for videogames and the like, for example for BF1.
Perhaps works as a consultant for some firearms R&D.

That's basically it. He also has degree in areonautic/areospace engineering so it's likely that this is the source of money needed to built "forgotten weapons reference collection" in the early years of the channel.
>>
>>33204645
where is there any evidence that Ian works as a consultant?
>>
>>33204663
For videogames there's a tweet or facebook post(I don't remember) when he said that he's in contact with EA, but can't disclose what is he doing there.

For firearm development - in one of the inrange Q&A's he mentions something about some company asking him about some of their idea they wanted to push on market he's also involved in HMG STG44 reproduction in some way.

Funny enough, and I know this is no way comparable to actual combat, my dad used to do reenactments, and when he was doing "cqb" he would bang an empty clip off his helmet to draw out the German reeancters. Said it would work everyonce in awhile.
