Can't find the old thread, dunno how to properly start the next one, so in the meanwhile you get this.

NTB (Norwegian news agency) reports today that USAF have bombed AQ in Yemen. At least 8 enemies reported KIA.

Here's the one that puzzles me. In Iraq today, PKK forces have clashed with kurdish security forces in the northwest. 1 dead, 7 wounded. Say what? The sources here are those security forced, according to NTB.

Finally, again according to NTB, Iraqi forces claim to have found an ISIS media production center in western Mosul.
>>
who cares
are you going to go kill the bad guys?
>>
Why are VICE the only ones doing decent reports from the ground involving western reporters
>>
>>33183369

Because they have good local branches? Yes, more agencies like that would be nice. But things could be worse. Remember the 'embedded' American news reports back when the Iraq war was still young? 'Oh what a glorious thing it is to be allowed to race over the desert in an American tank' reporting has to be one of the great lows of international news work.

Command nuseyritov and Russian invaders announced the capture of Palmyra. IG Units retreated from the ruins of the ancient settlement. Earlier, Palmyra already captures the infidels, but then she went back in the hands of the IG. Now, the ruins of the city controlled by the infidels again.

Russian propaganda with pomp reported that Shoigu "personally reported to Putin about it."

Meanwhile, according to the Syrian opposition, part of the ancient artifacts of Palmyra Russian export to Russia.

"To do this, even in the St. Petersburg Hermitage released the room where the exhibits brought from Syria, having historical value. This is outright theft, theft of cultural and is no different from the actions of barbarians who destroy monuments. This is the story of Syria and all those cultural monuments belong to the Syrian people. It is illegal to remove them from the country, or to destroy, no one has a right to. In this case, there is no difference between Russia and the IG, "said the European office of the Syrian opposition.

Yeah it's a Foxy one but the article originates with Associated Press (AP).

The interesting part of the article is that the Pakis appear to be targeting the Pashtuns on the Afghan border.

PKK are a hard lined commie group, the Kurdish security groups are just Kurdish formed militia. Not all Kurds agree and like PKK, they are all fighting for their Kurdistan but PKK are a bit more extreme.

It's like how ISIS and Al-Qaeda started clashing, both have the same ideals but disagreements in their methods of carrying it out.

I was talking about this in the other thread, the krg aka the peshmerga & other Kurds do not get along. It wasn't the pkk they fought with it was some local yazidi units that were trained & have ties to the pkk
>>
>>33183598
Nah it was the ybs a yazidis militia fighting the peshmerga. The krg are not well liked by well anyone really. They alienated yazidis & assyrians and have back stabbed other Kurds many times and are cozy with turkey
>>
>>33184746
Pesh has been moving to solidify relations more with the SDF and Iranian fronts (actually it's the other way around), but this is all fairly and it's a bunch of posturing to see who gets the biggest pull if a Federation gets established.

I think it was last week Barzani and Erdy had a meeting. I know KRG also told PKK to FUCK OFF out of N. Iraq recently. I highly suspect Turkish Kurds will be left out if there's ever is a movement to establish a Federation.

interesting vid, little boring but very pretty HD filming. Yikes the close encounter at about 15 minutes is embarrassing for both sides. Embarrassing for ISIS cause how the hell can you not hit guys that close to you, embarrassing for the Iraqis cause wtf just turn around and fire back...
>>
>>33184953
Meh. Quite literally for a long time YPG is/was PKK Syrian branch. Water is murky, I'd lean more towards saying YPG are PKK than YPG are not.

primarily the kurdish party in Iraq. Remember that the Iraqi government and the kurds do not get along, they have only been fighting together because of the ISIS threat to everyone. As soon as ISIS is gone the Iraqi government will begin fighting the kurds, and the civil war will become civil war part II, unless both sides make political compromises and don't stab each other in the back.....

TOW, most likely one that the Sauds or other Gulf States brought in (US still a possible provider, but they've been more apprehensive to directly arm them).

You can sometimes tell from the flight trajectory what kind of missile it is as well. But the most for sure way is to just look at the launcher.

Like pic related. Kornet ATGM.

Since the YPG-Rojava/SAA agreement in Manbij area, this really seems to be an option.

However, proof me wrong that -pic related- isnt BY FAR the best way/option since years to finaly make it to Deir Ez Zor

And ANNA claimed back in 2013 that the SAA was about to retake Aleppo.

Turkish gov official claims that they'd rather have the SAA control Manbij than the Kurds.

In other news, ISF has reportedly stormed the Al-Samoud and Tal Al-Ruman districts in Mosul. ISF have made steady progress in the southern part of West Mosul. Though it has not been without its issues as ISIL mounted a strong counterattack today which saw an estimated 10 SVBIED's hit ISF forces.

Pic related is French Arty near Mosul. They've been busy, with about 34 arty missions called in just in the past week.

Well the thing is that Manbij will most likely go back to the SAA in a post war situation from what I can tell. Kurds are gonna use it as a bargaining chip to get more autonomy or powers devolved to them should the conflict end. My guess is that the Turks just want to speed up the transfer of land in order to minimize Kurdish holdings. That and take Manbij.

The plan is totally obvious. Track ISIS agents in foreign countries, neutralize the ones in the US, and let them burn themselves out in Syria and Mosul. Assad, the Kurds and the Iraqis and Friends are already doing the job well enough we don't need to bother about sending troops. Statements as to doing otherwise during the last election cycle were just meant to attack the previous administration for SEEMING weak when we really don't need to bother killing all the Abu Hajars if everyone else will do it for us.

TOW: launcher has a distinct taper to it, missile in early stages of flight has two distinct side-ejecting exhaust flames. Missile maintains its orientation in flight and does not roll. It maintains a slight up attitude during flight. The tracking flare can appear yellow or red, I'm not sure if this is because of the cameras used to film it or what.

Kornet, HJ-8, and many other Russian and Chinese missiles: red tracking flare, roll in flight giving the flare a slight spiralling motion if you look for it. Maintain a slight up attitude in flight

Metis and Metis-M: bright sparking tracking flare in a particularly pronounced spiral motion. The rolling is really obvious in these guys, it makes the tracking flare carve big circles in the sky shitting out sparks

Apparently, on Friday a bunch of benghazi islamist groups now operating south of the oil crescent launched a surprise attack against Ras Lanuf and Es Sider, capturing the most important oil terminals as well as the major Air Base of the LNA (the tobruk-based eastern government)

Everyone though it was just a successfull raid and they shouldnt be able to hold on it, but they were joined by the Petroleum Guards and some sirte-based Misrata units and despite attempts the whole weekend over, they still hold the oil towns.

Now today there were reports that fighting has moved further east towards Brega, while the eastern government has declared a full mobilization.

It's just a drop of water in the ocean, really. To me the most interesting aspect is how much harder it gets for Norwegian government to punish other Norwegians who went to Iraq or Syria to volunteer for non-IS groups like YPG. How do you take them to court for something the govt sent others to do as well? I like it.

«Den som på rettstridig måte deltar i militær virksomhet i en væpnet konflikt i utlandet, straffes med inntil 6 år, med mindre vedkommende deltar på vegne av en statlig styrke».

That's Norwegian law. § 145. It essentially say that fighting in a foreign armed conflict and not in a government force is punishable by up to six years in prison. So Norwegians can legally join IDF as a volunteer, but not a militia. Like YPG. But so far, our govt have only chased the ass of the ISIS volunteers.
>>
>>33219028

Going to correct myself there. There's the word 'rettsstridig' used as a qualifier. Means 'illegal'. This is legalese and lawyer fodder, because if you have been fighting honorably and according to the laws of war, not killing anyone who was not killing others and so on, you have not been fighting 'illegally'. So the ISIS volunteers, bright bunch who like to pose on Facebook with Kalashnikovs and civilian corpses, gets their asses reamed if they are stupid enough to return to Norway. I am happy to say that half of those guys aren't even alive any more. 'Their friends and family had no idea, they thought they were on vacations at Mecca'.

All of the rest of the peanut gallery in the ME, Qatar, UAE, Turkey, Israel wanted us to go in. France and UK wanted in although the political process thwarted any British support for a major ground operation. Thankfully Barry O' decided the bullshit was being laid on too thick, and made the correct and moral decision not to follow through on "red line" ultimatums.

Great blog post detailing ISIS' 2nd taking of Palmyra.
http://spioenkop.blogspot.ca/2017/03/back-and-forth-how-islamic-state-retook.html?m=1
I didn't realise the Americans bombed so many assets, makes me wonder if they didn't would they have achieved a breakthrough at T4. Probably not, but the Americans hitting 14(!) Tanks surely helped blunt the spear.

That probably killed off a large chunk of the war spoils they captured, how pathetic though I didn't realise they captured so much shit the 2nd time taking Palmyra.

There are still some. We see a lot fewer against tanks though and some suspect that to be because of the new Russian-influenced anti-tow system on most of the Syrian tanks.

But yes, it appears that ever since mid-2016 the amount of TOW provided by the Turks/Gulf/CIA diminished.

The SAA is continuing their drive east from Aleppo through ISIS land and is now about to reach the Euphrates again for the first time in several years. It seems like the next pitched battle will be for Jirah Air Base.

SDF forces have cut the road between Raqqa and Deir, which was the last road out of Raqqa. It seems the SDF is running out of empty desert to "conquer" and it will be interesting to see what's next.

Turkroaches and their ex-terrorist goons continue their body snatching campaign near Manbij and have captured a foreign YPG volunteer. No doubt he will be treated fairly and not be left by his government to rot in a Turkish prison forever.

Why can't we let these "FSA" fucks eat a JDAM as a warning shot again?

>>33227144

We seem to be at a misunderstanding here. I do not question the ISIS having a considerable armored vehicle park. I am questioned the idea that ISIS would be sacrificing their best tanks for a fairly low value location such as Palmyra. It was a surprise big enough that they even fought for it rather than slipping away to a more vital location while they still could. SO, I would expect the Palmyra tanks to be just such that had their value spent already.
>>
>>33227285
>I am questioned the idea that ISIS would be sacrificing their best tanks for a fairly low value location such as Palmyra.
What are you on about. They were captured there, are you saying they should they have driven them 300 miles across barren desert to Deir or something? Or maybe it makes sense to use them to cross the empty desert to T4 against enemy tanks and take part in the assault there. Not sure how a rare T-72B magically loses its value here.
>>
>>33227336

A tank loses its value once you run out of spare parts, ammo, fuel, engines, gear boxes, track drives, barrels, or guys who can crew it - unless you can resupply Real Soon. They are running a war, not a militaria collection.
>>
>>33227364
It's T-55s and a few T-72s famalam. Not exactly an Abrams. Also why would the tanks be stationed there without fuel or supplies?

If you read the article here >>33220924 it's quite evident the tanks were all abandoned intact when ISIS unexpectedly swept in.

Incidentally, how much of that material would the ISIS guy be likely able to actually use?

I am aware that ISIS has a number of sunni, former Saddam army officers. But it has been a rough couple of years. The list of commanders with technical knowledge to make real use of artillery and armor should be growing thin by now. I do acknowledge that the ISIS ranks are not predominantly filled by goat herders but I think I need to be convinced of their military training for more complex weapon systems.
>>
>>33227520
Dunno, general thoughts on how good is the strategy, tech. Besides, remember that against a similarly inferior force in Afghanistan the Russian, UK and later American army got.... Let's say, more than they expected.

Right, speaking as a Norwegian then. We keep looking in Israel's direction because we've been off and on interested in the Palestinian cause. Used to be a lot of that interest back when Arafat, Perez and Rabin were doing the dance. Partly because Rabin and Perez were socialists and we had socialists govern here as well, and partly because the Palestinian cause was big with the more hard core socialists. Of course, Fatah died with Arafat and Hamas got no love from us, while Netanyahu is inedible even with our right wingers. We still have a few volunteers going to IDF or spend a year on kibbutzes, but the numbers are very few now. For my part I am aware that the IDF are still getting 30 billion dollars per year from USA even with Obamas lack of love, and I also know that ISIS have been trying to stir the shit up in Palestinian areas - actually I am surprised that they have not had more success. I'm suspecting that there is a real nasty fight going on between Hamas and ISIS in the shadows.

So, IDF armor? As long as USA keep you running, you are going to be a terrifying defense force. If Trump gets pissed off and remove that support, you are dead. Not from enemy attacks but for lack of funding.

>>
>>33227780

Depends on which package you look at, and on which info source.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_foreign_aid

In fiscal year 2014, the U.S. government allocated the following amounts for aid:

Total economic and military assistance: $43.10 billion

Total military assistance: $10.57 billion
Total economic assistance: $32.53 billion

of which USAID Implemented: $17.82 billion[4]

But seriously, I gotta run off for a couple hours. I'll find a better article when I get back.
>>
>>33227818

.... and I fucked up. Sorry, wrong quoted numbers. ok bbiab.
>>
>>33227694
Well, regarding the funding, you're probably right. Although we would keep going for a while, but it'd be hard.
Regarding Isis, they've fired a couple of rockets pretending to be hamas affiliated to get us to bomb them, but we didn't fall for it. But then hamas tried to bomb a train and shot at a military construction vehicle, so we trolled them a bit anyway.
>>
>>33226478
What the other guy said, not saying it was 14 tanks in a V offensive formation moving through a field, I bet a bunch of them were hit before they could be moved from the spot the were captured. US was doing Syria's scorched earth for them, since they fail at doing it themselves every time.

And it's done at this point in the war, but I remember the days leading up to Kobane with ISIS having like tank formations of 10+ T-55s moving through fields at the Kurds and the YPG lacking even sufficient amount of RPGs, Kurds trying to shoot tanks with 40mm HE rockets lol.
When they were practically safe from air attacks since the US hadn't entered ISIS was very army-esque.
>>
>>33227470
Most of it, hence why a bunch of it was bombed by the air before they had a chance to escape with it or fully utilise it.
>>
>>33227620
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to use any of the things. They can use them poorly and still be vaguely effective.

Well, fuck. Turned out to be easier to find twenty page articles about US military funding of IDF, than a quick comprehensive table of annual numbers. It does not help that they relabeled the funding types just a few years ago. Basically I have to agree with you that THREE billion dollars is pretty close to the annual number. Not 30. In my defense, the last time I went looking for these numbers they weren't given me in dollars. Oh well. Still a nice number.

>WASHINGTON

>The U.S. military has carved out a new role in Syria, with small numbers of troops now positioned to prevent an escalation of violence among an array of militias and other forces that have converged on an increasingly complex battlefield.
>A Pentagon spokesman, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, on Monday said the U.S. troops are on the western outskirts of Manbij to "reassure and deter," and are making themselves visible by flying American flags. It is neither an offensive nor defense role, he said, but a mission designed to keep a lid on tensions that risk creating new levels of violence in northern Syria.

NTB and AFP. The slaughter bill is in for the ISIS attack on the Sardar Daud Kahn hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan wednesday this week. 30 dead, and at least 50 wounded. The hospital is near the American embassy and is the biggest military hospital in the capital.

how many fighters involved?
>>

The article available to me only mentions 'multiple attackers'. There was one initial suicide bomber, and other attackers took up positions on the 2nd and 3rd floor. Afghan defense dept spokesman Dawlat Waziri referred to them as 'an unknown number' and also claimed they were all killed. Considering the value of that source, most of the attackers might even have slipped away afterwards.
