is there a point in getting 9mm handguns anymore?
even if you dont like .40s or 10mms you can convert them to other calibers, like 9mm, and have 2-3 guns in one package

my lgs has a selection of both .40 and 9mm glocks and Im trying to decide, not start an inevitable fight, but does a plain jane 9mm have any differences then a .40 aside from caliber? size, weight, build quality, ect?
>>
Convert glock 20 to 9mm: new barrel, new mags, new extractor, new springs. Price last time I looked 200 to 250.
Cost of police trade in 350 out the door
One gun with two calibers vs two guns plus extras.
>>
>>33179400
How many rounds does an average police trade in have through it?
>>
>>33179315
I don't need the same gun in 3 calibers. I don't want to spend money buying 3 different types of ammo for the same gun. I dont believe there is any quantifiable reason to own a .40 or 10mm. Any questions?
>>
>>33179653
if it's under 10,000 does it even matter?
>>
>>33179315
i have a G22 because the standard mags hold 15 and i'm autistic about going through exact rows of ammo in each box. three rows per mag, no half empty rows.

beyond that, literally no reason to go .40 over 9mm
>>
>>33179653
Totally depends on where it came from and why it was sent in. I had a stash of unissued 21s come in after a caliber switch and a handful of like new m&ps when a safety was required. Most have seen a little over 1200 to 1600 rounds if they were duty guns for two years and lots of carry. I always tell people to buy in a gunship instead of online so you can inspect everything, you can find some real bargains that way. When I worked in Atlanta there was a county that got new guns every year and sold the old ones with a free training class with the officers, and I think it would count as a safety course for your hunting license but it's been a minute.
>>
>>33179653
A lot of police guns never leave their holster except for recertification
>>
>>33179315
also, it's a late gen 2 i picked up for 300 bucks in NC. mag was fucked up so i sent it in to glock, they gave me two new mags. i need night sights though.

Pretty much this. I can see why some people would want the other calibers, I just personally don't.
>>
>>33179400
Convert G22 to 9mm, 1 barrel change. That's it. Same mags, same recoil spring, same extractor.

OP buy any Glock .40 and you can shoot 9mm or .357 sig with just a barrel change.
>>
The big problem is that whatever the caliber, you're still stuck with a Gluck.
>>
9mm is almost half the cost of .45 acp where I am. That's why my 1911 is collecting dust while my CZ is my carry.
>>
>>33179981
>9mm is almost half the cost of .45 acp where I am. That's why my 1911 is collecting dust while my CZ is my carry.

You decide what to carry based on ammunition costs?

Sir, you are VERY thrifty.

>muh calibre wars

shit I know guns are kind of a dead topic on /k/ but can't we just ease off?
>>
Caliber conversion is a meme. Buy the gun you want, in the caliber you want, along with a bunch of ammo to shoot.

>muh panic buy shortages

Fucking stockpile.
>>
>>33180015
>You decide what to carry based on ammunition costs?

Not him, but doesn't most of /k/ do that?

Yeah, 9mm can be effective, but its popularity can largely be owed to its cost and availability.
>>
>>33180015
> shoot 9mm way more than .45 acp recreationally
> way more familiar and confidant with that gun as a result
>????
>rely on a different gun for self defense
>>
>>33180015
If i can practice twice as much with 9 than 45 why wouldn't i? Especially since i don't subscribe to the stoppin powah meme. I rather have more bullets.
>>
>>33180036
>9mm can be effective, but its popularity can largely be owed to its cost and availability.

We should all carry ,22lr then: at 5 cents a round, we can save up to buy scopes to duct tape in place.

Reductio ad absurdium /tip
>>
>>33179400
Good luck finding a police trade G20. Your more likely to find a G21, then spend $300+ for a G20 slide w/ barrel and $100 dollars per conversion barrel on top of that. It adds up.

OR Buy a surplus G22 or 23 for 357 sig/9mm conversion and a surplus G21 cause FORTYFIVE
>>
>>33180096
>Reductio ad absurdium

Either that, or a direct path of logic.

Because 90% of .40 SW weapons that are interchangeable with 9mm are just 9mm platforms that were converted to .40 SW.

They weren't designed around .40SW and are going to experience wear and tear at a faster rate because of it.

>then just convert it to 9mm and shoot that
Or you could just buy 9mm in the first place if that's what you plan on shooting. No point in carrying .40 if you don't practice with it.
>>
>>33179810
But country do you live in?

They take their guns out anytime they believe they will have to use deadly force (e.g., high risk traffic stop, possible gun threat, etc.)

t. American
>>
>>33180318
T. moron who understands nothing of firearm design

No, idiot, most guns are not retro fitted to fire 40S&W

In fact most 9millimemer designed platforms realized this and stopped trying to adopt their weak as shit frame to such a violent, powerful cartridge.

Same goes for 45 hilariously enough.

because I like to have multiple guns in various calibers and lay them out in front of me sometimes
>>
>>33179315
The problem is that the breech face is designed for a specific case diameter. A .40 caliber breech face will never be able to shoot 9mm with the same reliability, regardless of how many conversion parts you have in the gun, as a breech face that's milled specifically for 9mm case diameter. You definitely don't want to fuck around with a .45 caliber breech face if you want to convert it to shoot 9mm.

Caliber converted handguns should only be considered for their ability to let you practice shooting during ammo shortages, which are rare enough in America that you don't need to compromise reliability the rest of the time, if this is going to be the only pistol you own. For most people, it makes more sense to just choose a caliber and stick with it. Buy lots of that caliber instead of half a case of one caliber and half a case of another. The extra cost for conversion parts is usually not worth it unless there is some serious ammo rationing going on where you live for an extended period of time.

>>33179400
There are basically no police trade in Glock 20's, since the only times when police officers use them is when their department gives them leeway to choose their own gun, and even then, you probably don't want one because most officers are going have shot a lot of .40S&W out of the stock barrels anyway.

I have a Glock 35 I currently have converted to 9mm. It's pretty nice since I can jump in and out of Major/Minor shooting classes. Needed Extractor/ejector to make it function flawless, but they're easy to switch out and I've had zero issues

>>33187143
>Wants to prove .40 still has versatility over 9mm
>Uses 115 grain instead of 147 grain
115 is for target practice, I don't care if it's a hollow point. Cool channel, but flawed experiment

10mm is for me, I have bears in the area.

>is there a point in getting 9mm handguns anymore?
If I have to pull and fire to save my life I am going to be operating at 97% instinct fear and adrenaline. I don't need stopping power. I needs 5 extra rounds to ensure I actually hit my target while I'm pissing my pants.
>>
Off topic but I'm planning on starting a company called DNG(dead nigger guns).
Idea is to sell firearms that had verifiably put a dindu down.

Completely manageable if you are a regular shooter. I use the Underwood full loads too. .357 magnum kicks much harder.
