So we agree that shotguns are the best firearm a man can own in a real life scenario.
REAL LIFE means the everyday situation when a gun could be needed both for defence and food bringer, with the former hopefully once or twice in a lifetime or else you're living in a big fat shithole

ANYWAY WHY SHOTGUNS ARE GOAT

Cheap, powerful, easy to operate and maintain, some of the simplest mechanics are used, can shoot a cloud of pellets of a big fat over .70 caliber chunk of lead, the most flexible weapon/none (probably only knives can be more flexible) comfortably accurate up to 100 yards which is plenty for any real life need, ammo is plentiful, cheap and even can be hand loaded with minimum skill and equipment, ability to make cut shells if need arise in a pinch, easy to clean and a quality gun with a chrome lined barrel would last a lifetime

Cons, no penetration on hard targets with conventional ammo, extremely bulky and heavy ammo, relatively heavy recoil with any load

Discuss, also Shotgun General Thread

What are you talking about? If you shoulder your shotgun right then the you should have no problem whatsoever firing light #8 target load. I literally shoot 200 (8 rounds of 25) rounds at the trap field each day on the weekends and dont feel a damn thing.

>>33175397
Actually, if the 20ga is extremely lighter than your heavy 12ga then the recoil might be felt more.

If it isn't too old but still was made before the Freedom group brought them out, that isn't that bad of deal if youre just set on an 870. If it comes with any choke tubes that would make it even better. Mossbergs in general are overrated on /k/ just because everyone here is so poor, but honestly they aren't bad for a poorfag shotgun. A maverick 88 is cheap as well.
>>
>>33175514
How old? I wouldn't touch a post-Freedom Group 870 at all because I'm not big on shit QC and a gun that rusts even in the desert.

Provided it predates that, it's a bit expensive for a used shotgun in my experience teebeeaitch but if you want an 870 then you do you.
I personally prefer the control layout on Mossbergs but that's personal preference.

>>33175336
Shotguns are a Jack-of-all-trades weapon. They can do everything, but a gun purpose-built for a given function will outperform it. The exception to this being killing birds, obviously.
If you can only own one gun, it should be a 12ga for that reason: it's excellent at a couple things and adequate for most things.

I also think shotguns are generally pretty underrated for home defense on /k/, taking a backseat to semiauto rifles. Primarily this seems to be because
>muh cops and military only use shotguns for breaching in [current year].
I think this ignores some key things like the fact that shotguns have absolutely phenomenal incapacitated/kill rates for a single shot to the torso (85% iirc, been a while since I read the study but I do remember it outpacing rifles by a bit and pistols by a ton).
>>
>>33175655
The wingmaster is a classic bird gun (if the name didn't give it away). Seeing that picture makes me angry at the Freedom Group because you can't just buy a brand new one in pristine condition without worrying about some quality control oversight. In fact, I would be a little concerned about about the condition of the bore. Modern hunting regulations prohibit use of lead shot for duck hunting, so people are forced to use steel shot. A significant amount of usage of steel shot will damage a steel bore over time. And that is a popular shotgun for duck hunting, so there could have been some steel shot through it. The guy would have to be an avid duck hunter to really have that effect on the barrel, but its definitely worth checking it out before hand in person if you can.
>>
>>33175690
Yes they are. The only thing they are good for is bird hunting and as a breaching tool, for everything else there are much better options.

Well I do believe that here in this place people will always shill about the AR as this being a US board and there the AR platform is like a VW Golf TDI for Europeans; actually I feel that outside the US you will find that smooth bore guns far overwhelm other kind of guns, then you'll have 9mm pistols and then AKs.

Although you can carry a lot of .22, you can take on any game in America. However you can get hand reloadable brass shells, and since the lead isn't coated you can also make your own shot.

The only issue is primers.
>>
>>33177417
Buckshot is perfectly fine for deer (I wonder if that is why it is called buckshot), boar, coyote, any medium game that you would use a .30 caliber for. People take moose with 12ga slugs, as well. Not to mention all smaller games like squirrels and rabbits that you can't take with a .30 caliber without losing all the meat just by using a light and small shotsize.

Only time it isn't adequate is if you are in the open plains of the west or some shit. If youre shooting mule deer at 300 yards, okay fine a 12 ga isn't that good. But youre scoped .308 that you use for 300 yards is no good in the woods where I live.

I use those very same turkey loads in your box for turkey hunting, and I've seen how ineffective they are against coyote. They always run away and you gotta track them down after they run themselves dead. I know human skin and coyote hide are different, and I'm sure there are some nice youtube videos showing turkey loads do good against gel. I would rather trust buckshot a #3 or #4 buckshot, over a turkey load to incapacitate a person and without the over penetration of a OO buck.

Not to mention that they are magnum 3" shell firing 1 7/8oz of shot. Those fuckers kick. The purpose of them is to put a dense pattern of shot even out to 50 yards that will cover a turkey's neck.

I prefer the 500 for shorter OAL but if the +3 capacity outweighs that for you get the 590.
590A1 is shit though. Don't get that. Ghost rings are the wrong way to use a shotgun (point, don't aim), the barrel is thicker so retards don't smash it when they accidentally leave it in heavy doors like those on ships and the metal FCG doesn't add shit over the polymer one except weight. I have a 50 year-old 500 with polymer trigger group that's still going strong and it's had the shit beat out of it by everyone that's owned it, me included.

So youre telling me that after hundreds of years of people using shot pellets in both war and hunting that you discovered a small shot pellets meant for bird are actually suitable for humans?

At least the most important thing is just knowing how to operating your gun and firing effectively. If you hit your target you will at least have some advantage even if your puny bird pellets don't fully incapacitate them.

But if you miss, that is 1 7/8oz of lead going somewhere you don't want it since you chose a magnum turkey load. It isn't like you don't have to worry about what is behind where you are shooting. That will always be a factor regardless.

And the limited use shotguns still have in the military is buckshot, so what is your point?

Not to mention the examples you listed, they are going to cartridges that are more easy to control in sub 300 yard distances. The magnum turkey loads you keep talking about kick more than a regular 2 3/4" buckshot in addition to capacity lose in the magazine tube, so it is a moot point.
>>
>>33177918
"Gauge" refers to the diameter of a sphere of lead that will fit in the bore.
"12 Gauge" means the sphere in question weighs 1/12 of a pound.
Smaller numbers=bigger bore
".20 gauge" is fucking enormous bro.
"20 gauge" is smaller than 12ga.

>Rifles have universally gone from 7.62x39, 51 and 54R to 5.56x45 and 5.45x39
B8 but I'll bite:
1) Russia still issues both 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 depending on role and environment because both rounds have their strong points.
2) The full-power cartridges in question are still fielded, just in a different role
3) The transition to intermediate cartridges has more to do with doctrinal changes and mechanical differences changing engagement distances in wars. Most modern conflict happens inside 300m and inside that distance volume of fire generally determines who wins. 7.62x51 weighs significantly more than 5.56x45, meaning soldiers can carry more 5.56, meaning they can shoot more.

>shotgun (point, don't aim)
Thats only true for wingshooting. The pattern isn't larger than your hand at real close range so still need to aim it properly. When you get like 15/20 yards out then out of an open choke the pattern gets a wide but not by much. The point youre making about the ghost ring is still valid though. If youre using a bead sight like youre supposed to, then you can get on the target faster than a ghost ring iron sight. Honestly a bead sight is very similar to a red dot in that easy fast acquisition, though you have to stay in the gun so your always aiming down where the gun is pointing. If you were mainly using slugs then ghost ring or some kind of rifle style sight would help.

>>33179198

Git gud or get a smaller gun. Recoil is the "equal and opposite reaction" of the force of your shot going the other way. The lower the recoil, the less power your shot has.
This is day one shit.
If #00 buck is too much for you then use a smaller load. #4 buck is pretty well agreed-upon to be the smallest you wanna go but there's no reason to use neutered loads, ever, which is what "low-recoil" means.

if you really want an 870 cause you love the design but cant find an older used one the express is an acceptable option. its not a cost effective or smart choice but under rems unfinished rush job there is a good gun. its like buying a knife whose maker didnt bother to sharpen them even though they used to come razorsharp 2 decades ago. if you are willing to put in work an express can be ok. or you could just buy a 500 and not have to put in work to get something out of the box acceptable.

Not doubting you, I've had interior parts magically vanish from firearms before too.

The whole mechanism screws into the hook on the right, and the spring and ball sit in a hole in the receiver. The ball catches on the plate and keeps it in position. Basically the only part of your safety actually mounted to the receiver has disappeared.

The bayonet points up a little because that's how the 590A1's bayonet mount is, it happens with all bayonets. It's not really near the line of the bore though

Nobody, I bought a cheap knockoff m1917 bayonet and a cheap AR15 bayonet off amazon and kitbashed them. I had to do a lot of cutting and filing to make the mounting hardware fit. Was worth it though, stubby bayonets look silly on a 590a1. Them trench gun aesthetics.

>>33191559
I meant a m1905. A m1917 bayonet would be more accurate but I couldn't find a sufficiently cheap repro for a project that I didn't know would be successful

https://www.amazon.com/SZCO-Supplies-926826-M1905-Bayonet/dp/B00870XRZ0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1488611402&sr=8-1&keywords=m1905+bayonet

I went with this bayonet for the mounting hardware because the back clip attached with a hex bolt. Internally the blade was attached to a tube which made the conversion easier than it would have been otherwise. The slot in the crossguard wasn't wide enough to fit the 1905 blade, so I had to file it to be longer while still being in the middle of the crossguard.

how does the ithaca 37 even work? My friend's maverick 88 has an ejection hole for the spent shell, which when cycled, ejects at the same time as a new shell is loaded into the feeding ramp in the hole in the bottom. since the ithaca 37 has only one hole, the hole in the bottom, how does it preform both operations at the same time? ejection and feeding at the same racking movement?

sorry if autism, am not big on shotguns

>>
>>33192553
If the bead is metal they are usually screwed in - plastic can be a push-fit.

Depending on the diameter of the sheared-off part left in the rib, then drilling down the centre and a screw extractor.

It's metal. Here's a better picture. Would a circular hole in the top allow me to unscrew it? I have super-tiny flat/philips screwdrivers.
>>
>>33192570
It might, but it depends how tight the fit of the thread is and if Locktite was used.

I believe you can get left-hand drills (not kidding) - if you could get one it might ease it out as you drilled with the drill in reverse.. The problem with any drilled hole will be getting the hole started without the drill jumping off and onto the blued barrel. From your slightly fuzzy photo, to looks like it's broken off flush, which is a shame. if it's slightly proud you could try slotting it with a Dremel and then use a screwdriver. Soak it in a releasing fluid first.

If the bead is brass then warming the barrel will make it grip tighter - brass expands more than steel.

Good luck

Just got my new 18.5" 590A1

Was looking at tube extensions, and unless I'm losing my mind my tube is significantly longer than like every other 590A1 18.5" I've seen.

Most people seem to say the S&J Hardware +2 extension is the way to go which ends flush with the barrel, only it's 6.75" which would CLEARLY fly clear past my barrel.

What's the deal? Did they change the tube design recently or something?

Noguns here, I don't understand a couple things about chokes.

Can you fire shot out of a slug barrel in a home defense context? How often can you fire lead shot out of a rifled barrel before it affects the rifling?
>>
>>33194484
For slug barrel you mean a fully rifled one? If so yes you can fire shot in a rifled bbl but you'd have a weird, donut shaped fast spread.
Leading can be a serious issue especially with bare shot. 'Cupped' shit into wads should mitigate the problem. But understand we are talking a very orthodox use of a rifled shotgun.

Also google 'paradox choke' and learn about how partial rifling works in hunting

The shell lifter is a sort of j-shaped two-pronged fork that doubles as the ejector. When the gun is in battery it rests above the bolt.

When you cycle the action, lifter is cammed down and ejects the shell. When the bolt is in its rearmost position, the bolt releases the shell interruptor and the next round feeds on top of the lifter. Bolt is cycled forward and the round is fed into the chamber.

Looks about right for a 18.5" bbl and a 5-shot tube. Compare to my 500.
Generally 20" bbl and 7-shot tube sit flush, so I can't really imagine a scenario where a 7-shot tube doesn't stick out past a 18.5"bbl.
That's just my guess though. I know jack shit about 590A1s.

are ithaca 37s that expensive? I constantly find them for around 350 canadabux up here, though they are mostly skeet models or something, not the aesthetic military-looking model
>>
>>33199718
They run $300-$500 used for long-barreled birdguns. It's not about not being able to afford it. It's that I don't need to drop a few hundred on another shotgun sitting next to my other 3 shotguns.
>>
>>33199718
Or wait are you talking about them being expensive to produce? It's just in terms of the specs required, the care put into them, and the materials used. It costs more to make a 37 than a Mossman or Remington does, and when those are the primary competitors, you need to price it similarly.

Hell Remington's hurting and cutting corners because they can't compete with Mossberg.
>>
>>33199868
Oh I see

I was thinking of picking up some non-collectible ithaca 37 (like a post war birdgun) and cutting it down to a more manageable length for bear/predator defense and grouse hunting while hiking around.

>>
>>33199905
why is remington having a tough time?
>>
>>33200048
There are a couple posts about it ITT
Basically they were bought out by a big conglomerate (Freedom Group) and their QC went to shit, presumably to increase profit margins and stay competitive with Mossberg, which pretty much dominated the "solid budget shotguns" category and thus sets what an acceptable price for a good shotgun is.
So Remington across the board, but particularly their budget models, have a ton of issues now. Basically they're coasting due to the company's excellent reputation but it can't last forever
>>
Is shooting a pump even okay for skeet or sporting clays? I want to try it out to see if I like it, but for some fucking reason every place around here that does it doesn't rent
