How did soldiers in WW1 and 2 not lose all there hearing due to lack of ear protection?
I couldn't find any evidence showing that infantry had any form of hearing protection in WW1 or 2 so how did they all not go deaf due to the sounds of rifle rounds?

Of course they had extensive hearing damage. Where do you think the meme of the old deaf guy going, "Whaa?" comes from?
>>

Because hearing loss due to rifles is over blown. Ive shot the m2 several times with no hearing protection and the worst that's ever happened is a mild ringing for a short period. Even firing the m203 at the range we didn't wear anything. The only time I could imagine it being even a bit bad is indoors where it might echo.

Also, a lot of bad things did happen to old time vets, they just drank a lot of it away.

This

Just a small anecdote I have, I had a chance to sit down and have lunch with a WWII Marine veteran, salty bastard was in Bougainville and the entirety of the battle of Iwo Jima, and I pretty much had to speak in a raised voice the entire conversation even though he had a hearing aid on, he had some crazy stories though.

Now in WWII I think I read somewhere that naval crews and some artillerymen would stuff cotton in their ears if they had the chance before fire missions/naval battles.

Tank crew headsets didn't have muffs for their headsets either, I think bomber headsets were the only ones with muffs on them but Im not sure.

Some people would use cigarette butts

Thank a lot of hay? Why would I do that?
>>

That works to an extent, I tried that during some range with tanks, SMAWs, TOWs, AAVs and small arms, wish I decided to try it for a regular rifle range instead...
