You forgot to mention
>autism sheath for carrying on your back

The "best" swords were the swords designed to be used in the time when swords were actually used, and not just a status symbol carried in ceremony or by officers. They are simple and effective, designed with functionality over decoration. They were like the pistols of the day, a good self defense weapon, and your side arm on the battlefield.

This is my VA Rhinelander, an Oakeshott XIIa style that would be at home in Europe around the mid 13th century, except for having superior steel/tempering and the hilt being more like early Renaissance. The Katana around the 13th-15th century as well for it's size, not as sure with Japanese history though.
>>
>>33174609
Some of the Japanese WW2 swords were designed from combat experience in china. Specifically the Koa Isshin Mantetsu sword was made from high grade steel using special forging techniques to create superior blades for use in combat.

It's really good, I like it. Like most of their machetes, it needs some work out of the box, but they are durable as shit. Mine has held up great to two years of use, a lot of that beating on thicker white pine up in Maine in the summers. My only real complaint is the handle is comfortable but a bit slippery, not really a big deal since it's a D guard. Also a bit of shock reaches the hand while chopping. It's pretty blade heavy (nothing crazy), if you are looking for something more sword like, consider the Condor Naval Cutlass.

My modifications:
-Convexed the edge
- rounded the spine on mine (better for breaking dead branches, saves the edge)
- Wrapped an old belt around the top of the sheath, I put my belt through the old belt (instead of the loop) so it hangs at a 45 degree angle, like a sword, 24" is too much to hang straight, it gets in the way while climbing over logs.

For big cheap knives, also consider the GI-tanto... and If you can aford it. The Ontario SP-10 ($50) is a freaking beast.
>>
>>33175157
>Tactical Spork
The idea of a spork that has a knife in the handle is pretty good. But that implementation is just too tacticool.

My Katana is a "Nanbokucho" style... Honestly not super familiar with what that actually means.

But what I do know, is it's a 30" blade with, 31" from the Tsuba (guard), with a 13" handle, and that's pretty massive for a Katana, almost O-Katana sized, normally Katanas were 28 1/2ish blades with 10-11ish handles. And I know (well have heard) that larger Katana were more common later on in the 13th-15th century.

Like I said before, I am far from an expert, barely a novice on Japanese history. But this is what I meant by mentioning it's size.

Oh a coast fag. I'm about 2 1/2 hours North/west from you. The nearest "big" town in Dover Foxcroft. The nearest town is Monson.

I live up there for about 2-3 months in the summer. We are about 25 miles from the nearest town, most a lot of it on dirt road, we our on a little peninsula on a beautiful lake.

Btw, I really recommend getting a Schrade Brush Sword (pic related), I just got mine and I'm in love with it. I've not gotten a chance to really test it out, but I feel like it would be perfect for the woods of Maine. It feels like a big knife, more than a machete. And it's only like $33. My only worry is if the steel will hold up, I think it will based on reviews.
>>
>>33177944
In the woods here I pretty much consider knives and big machetes toys. For real bushwhacking I use an Estwing hatchet. Seems to work better on the dry pine shit we have up here. I fully admit I got the bowie machete just for something fun to fuck with

Isn't that area pretty much nothing but old people and unemployed mill workers living on social sec. or unemployment and drinking gallons of Allen's per day? I went to Dover-Foxcroft once and that's what it looked like...

Everything down here's a tourist trap but at least we have jobs and money...

Well you aren't wrong, the whole Roxan (no clue how spell her name) trying to turn central Maine into a wildlife reserve thing, was pretty much the nail in the coffin for the economy.

And yeah I agree, normally I pack a Snow&Neally Hudson Bay Ax (that I how to drastically thin the edge) with me for serious work... but in my area, where they selectively log every five or 10 years, there are a lot of 1 to 2 inch patches of moosewood and Poplar... so a nice heavy machete or big knife make short work of that when making a clearing.

Nothing wrong with fun to fuck with, that's why a got my two swords and Xl Espada

Jesus fuck why. I hate giant folding knives. I do wish I had that much disposable money to blow on /k/ shit though.

I never really got the Snow and Nealley hype. Everyone loves their wooden axe handles but I'm not a fan. Get me a cheapo Home Depot yellow fiberglass handled ax and it'll almost never break. And if it does I can still get like 5 more before I've spent as much as you did on your one Snow and Nealley.

I don't really know what to think about the whole Roxanne thing. On the one hand I'm very pro hunting and such and I hate to see land that's closed to outdoors people, but on the other hand I'm very pro property rights, and I don't like telling someone they can't do something with land they own.
>>
>>33178498
I even said it in that comment... fun... I'm not exactly rich, I'm a college fag, I don't have much disposable income, But years ago I figured out how to make my blade hobby self sustaining. I invested in sharpening equipment, and I make enough money from that on the side to pay for my blades. Although lately most of my sharpening has gone to living expenses.

I don't know what it is, I just really like wooden handles, even on my spiting mauls even though I probably have to re mount them twice a season from over strikes. I get a lot of hand shock from fiberglass, and I don't like that. I'm eventually going to get a Gransfors Bruk Forest ax... you probably think they are really over priced, I can understand.

I agree she has the right to own land... but I think it is rotten of her intentionally kind of strangle the economy in places with it. More so she was pushing to have more than just her land made into the national park.
>>
>>33178651
That doesn't even look fun though. It doesn't even look comfortable to hold or use.

Did you fell that tree by hand? Have fucking fun with that dude. My roommate's just like that, loves chopping trees with an axe for some reason. I never understood it.

I am ashamed to admit that at least half of the blades I own are Mtech or worse... I'm pretty broke

and yeah I haven't been following the issue that closely. If she really is trying to convert land that isn't her property then that is really shitty

The XL Espada is actually one of the most Ergonomic knives I own, it's actually pretty amazing, there are like 10 different ways to hold the damn thing. I don't use it for much obviously. I got it on a pretty big sale, like $90.

Yeah I did down this one with an ax, but I got bored and cut up the rest with my Stihl. Normally I use a chain saw, but time to time, if it's not around anything important, felling a tree by hand can be a fun challenge, and a good work out.

It's patterned after particularly heavy duty swords used to defeat armour and kabuto and survive afterwards.

I believe hanwei wanted to recreate the Dotanuki school style of smiths that were active in that era. They made very robust blades of superior sharpness and cutting ability and were favoured by generals and samurai alike.

Yes, it was the warring period directly before the Muromachi era. Heavy, powerful blades were quite popular in this period and well into the Muromachi years that saw alot of political changes, warlords, clan battles and wars with Korea, ultimately culminating in the Tokugawa shogunate.

Heavy swords like these were prized for being perfect for heavy battles, capable of splitting a Kabuto helmet, easily cutting a lightly armoured foot soldier down or withstanding sword strikes. After Tokugawa came to power and the warring period came to a close swords like these fell out of favour for more lighter, practical styles.

Once again thanks for the great info, it's nice to actually know a thing or two about the design history of what I have.

I wish manufacturers like Hanwei would put more historical background info up about their blades, if they are based on historical blades. Like Albion is pretty good about it.

I've always found getting into the technicalities of Japanese culture a bit daunting because of the language barrier.

Say you would not happen to know what this (pic related) is? It was given to me by one of my Physics Professors a while ago, after we had a long discussion about the harmonics of European longswords. He did not tell me much, just that it's some type of catalog for modern traditionally forged Japanese swords from Japan, and he "had to take a test" to get it. Any thing you can tell me about it?

>>
>>33177818
A katana blade is anything between 2 and 3 shaku (30.3cm), so yours is definitely on the longer side, but I don't think it's irregular either.
It always depends on the style, some like in the Bizen area were famous for their short blades, even during the warring era (15-16th centuries), so it's not like the longer, beefier swords were favored everywhere but those usually denotes battle periods sword designs, whereas shorter swords could have been used in the Edo period as well.
Yours appeared to be from a kyushu style, this region was indeed famous for its typically longer and tougher blades and the fencing style that went with it (Jigen-ryu for instance).

Probably a catalog published by the NTHK, which is the main governing body of Nihonto in Japan. It looks like a showcase of modern smiths, like your professor said. Gendaito (modern traditionally made swords) are starting to become more collectable and appreciated these days past the usual living national treasure smiths.

Sure but then if you start going "It's more of a dai-katana / o-katana / odachi than a typical katana" (not you oc), you're already on the edo-bs-regulations-route because you're already defining the weapon according to its blade length, so that's why I myself stuck with it.

In the end, it doesn't matter that much, but regardless a 30'' blade length katana isn't particularly out of place, especially if you go for the Kyushu vibe.

That's one thing I never got about Maine, is the obsession with logging. My dad insisted on heating the house with wood, and splitting it all by hand. I had to split wood a lot growing up, it sucked ass. Refused to use a log splitter.

I'm glad you like it. I'm still not a fan. If it's not going to be small enough to fit in a pocket, it might as well just be a fixed blade IMO, those are way more fun

Oh it fits in my pocket just fine, takes up the whole thing... But it fits.

Up there were use a log splitter and Chain Saw most of the time.

We are off the grid, only on a little solar (just for power tools and phones pretty much), and everything else is on gas (stoves and fridges) that has to be brought in on truck via A.E.Robinson every 4 so months. So the only heating has to be done by wood stove.

Keep in mind, I only am up there in the summer for 2-3 months. Other family members of mine stay up from around May to September.

I've read that it had happened before, but I think in the context of the story it was hearsay, and so as to whether it actually happened or not is rather dubious. If I'm remembering correctly it was in the book "The Pacific", which is second hand story telling straight from the memoirs of actual soldiers, however, with it being that way it buries the truth somewhat.

Early on the M1s had a bayonet sword but it was phased out pretty early on in favor for a smaller bayonet knife.
