I'd probably start by buying a kit anon. You'll need some basic woodworking tools for inletting and finishing the stock, and some type of cold blue product to finish the metal components. Dixie Gun Works has tons of related kits and materials. Probably books too.
You can build a smoothbore with pipes, furnishings, and wood from home depot.
You can buy kits that come with everything you need.
