>questions that dont deserve their own thread

The idea of a collapsible hunting spear looks kinda neat, but does it actually works well? Or is it just a gimmick?

The screw-on joints looks pretty weak, i doubt it can withstand something like an angry boar charging at you
>>
>>33169476
"Collapsible" is not an adjective I'd want attached to anything between me and a pissed off wild animal, regardless of how strong the joints were.
>>
>>33169476
>The screw-on joints looks pretty weak
Exactly what are you using to inform your opinion?

The only problem I see is the parts of the shaft are not interchangeable. Something which should definitely be the case in a high stress situation.
>>
I am in the process of "restoring" a vz24. (basically just putting the thing in a stock)

I'm wondering if I can drop it into a k98 stock that I have lying around, and fit a vz24 handguard to it. Looking at both guns, the stocks looks identical to me other than the handguard.

Nice.

What drew me to the gun was a low 3 digit serial number that matches with the bolt. The barrel has German proof marks on it and the receiver has no marks other than a few tiny Czech lions and a long ass Czech marking on the side. I'm guessing the Czechs scrubbed the serial off and marked their own.

It's a shame it didn't come with the original stock, but I think it will be interesting nonetheless

So I understand that the idea behind not having the hammer rest against the firing pin is that should the hammer be hit from behind, it would still somehow transfer this impulse to the firing pin which would hit the primer, my question is, is there a video of this happening? I have trouble imagining it.

Which model of Kar.98? Both the Kar.98k and Vz.24 are standard-length M98 actions, so the stock from one will fit on the action of the other and vice-versa.
>and fit a vz24 handguard to it.
Not so simple. The Vz.24 lower barrel band that holds the handguard on is not in the same location as on the Kar.98k, it will not secure the handguard properly. The Vz.24 barrel band also attaches to the stock via a cross bolt; whereas the Kar.98k lower band uses a spring clip. You would have to modify the Kar.98k stock so the Vz.24 barrel band can sit in the right place.

>>33170025
>I'm guessing the Czechs scrubbed the serial off and marked their own.
More likely the Germans took it and replaced the barrel. Czechs didn't make Vz.24 rifles after WW2. Pics?

Is it all that common for a metal lower replacement to simply not fit on a PTR?

I got a painted metal lower and done some fitting and the end cap/stock will only go about half way down. I've worked on it for a couple hours straight last night, and I honestly can't figure out what it's hanging up on, but when it does it's a solid hang. It has to be on the tongue that slips under the end cap, but it fits in there fine when not on the upper receiver. It's like it torques the end cap to a funny angle.

Anyone had a similar experience? Anyone have pics of a fitted one if adjustments had to be made?
>>
>>33169476
Look on the bright side: if the joints break you still have a wee little short sword.
>>

>>
>>33170472
Now that you mention it, you may be on to something. I noticed the sight on it is an original k98 and a vz24 handguard won't fit it. I'm not with the gun right now but I will take some pics when I am.

I know next to nothing about k98s, and this is the first one I've owned, so it is all new to me.

You might have a Vz.98N, rather than a Vz.24. These were Kar.98k copies made post-WW2 in Czechoslovakia for the Czech Army and for export.

During WW2 the CZ-Brno Mauser production lines at Brno and Povaska Bystrica had been transitioned from making Vz.24s to making Kar.98ks by the occupying German. After the war the Czechs just kept making Kar.98ks, only calling them Vz.98N (N=Nemacka=German) instead; they made no more Vz.24s.

I want to buy a Walther P22 for a "Self Defence" gun in case shit ever hits the fan.

1. Are Walthers good guns? Or just 007 Meme Tier?

2. What damage does a .22 round do to a Human? A youtube video explaining this would be great.

I know that .45 acp would have greater stopping power, but would a .22 shot center mass still be enough to stop someone charging at me with a knife? Then i could walk up and double tap them in the skull?

Thanks

.22 just isn't reliable enough for self defense use. Also, poor shot placement which can happen during a SHTF scenario, makes mag capacity very important. Save up for a nice 9mm/whatever centerfire weapon.
>>
>>33172678
would a 22 still stop someone? The goal isnt necessarily to kill someone in a single shot. its more to stop someone charging at you.

if i have 10 shots, ill still take 10 shots.

and shot placement is important, id just aim for the chest or stomach. Im just trying to hit them, and stop them.. im happy to shoot someone in the face while they are holding their stomach..

In a life or death situation the body is flooded with adrenaline and will suppress pain. The goal is to hit the central nervous system, failing that you need to destroy the attackers body. Basically, the higher the forward surface area of the round the better chance you have of hitting something vital. Look around at what law enforcement/anyone in defense uses. High capacity centerfire weapons.

Also, good luck in court after executing someone with a shot to the head.
>>
>>33172726

>>
>>33172900
Not true, .357 magnum is. Just a bitch and a half to carry in a gun large enough to absorb the recoil well.
>>
>>33172927
I didnt list it as a good option because when shit hits the fan, chances are you wont be hitting the person on your first shot. I imagine you could fire off 3 or 4 rounds of a 9mm in the same amount of time you could fire once or twice of a .357. not to mention if you're indoors, enjoy blowing out them ear-drums

this scenario would imply either a war, or an absence of Law and Law Enforcement.

also the Fight or Flight adrenaline point is an excellent point, no doubt, but im just more curious of whether a .22 would be able to overcome that and slow someone down enough to execute them without hassle..

>>33172900
see above.

Why .22? Because I already have a 357, a 22, a 30.06, 2 12ga shotguns and a 9mm..

Im more concerned with the cost of buying bulk ammunition and the ease that a smaller calibre such as a 22 would provide.

No the boar has a short sword, you have a broken table leg.

Those connections would snap over a knee easy, they are too short, if the threaded threaded was 3inches long it would be a much more sturdy connection. Only the last half inch would need to be threaded but a longer insert would make it so that any bending force isn't focused solely on the threads themselves

I really can't tell how sturdy these screw joints are, but I'd just like to point out thow they are used, in germany at least (it seems to be spanish in origin, I guess hunting practice is somewhat similar there).
You shoot a boar from a fixed position (very rarely from a stalk), then follow its trail with a dog. The spear is only used to finish it off, and then only if the dog is too close to shoot without endangering it. The boar is then usually wounded, weak, trying to flee rather than attack. A boar that would actually charge is rare for one (means you fucked up majorly beforehand) and hard to defend against with a spear too. The vast majority of hunters doesn't use spears, but prefers short rifles in .308 or stronger.

Any reasonably priced safe serves to deter only total retards and legal problems if something needs to be kept in a safe in your jurisdiction.
If you actually want to keep things safe you need a vault.
>>
>>33189116
>>33189170
The stack on safes are just lockers, about the same safety as a lockable wooden cabinet. Even the $500 "safes" are still able to be opened with a fire axe and about 30 minutes. If you want a real safe, AMSEC, the better Fort Knox, or Sturdy Safe are good brands to look at.

The cheap lockers are good for keeping children out, the sub-$1000 ones are good for your average jackass that doesn't wanna lug it around or have much time to get in. It would take a real safe to deter a determined criminal.
>>
I solemnly swear this is not bait.
I don't understand why people like the AR15 so much. You can't get a folding stock or decent "pistol" configuration because of the stick coming out the back and they are famously unreliable outside of good conditions. I get that there's a wide aftermarket but that seems like something that should happen for a better rifle than this thing. So clearly I'm missing something, but what?

Sometimes it's from weird gun calibers that were holdovers from WWI, since the tooling already existed for those sizes of bore and ammo. The 8.8cm "Flak 88" everybody knows and loves was based on the Flak 16 from WWI, which itself was a modification made to WWI era medium artillery pieces repurposed for an AA role.

Sometimes it's because it's the smallest possible cartridge they could do to do something they wanted. The Wehrmacht liked the 7.5cm guns because it was considered the smallest viable tank gun to fire HE rounds.

Sometimes the "weird" calibers in millimeters are from guns designed in imperial measurements. The 76mm gun the US used on the Hellcat (among other things) is a 3 inch gun.
>>

>Sometimes the "weird" calibers in millimeters are from guns designed in imperial measurements.
pretty much always

37mm is a 1 pounder
40mm is a 2 pounder,
47mm is a 3 pounder
57mm is a 6 pounder

and so on. its a hold over from cannonball times.
the other ones that doesnt fit the pound pattern, comes from the imperial system. and then you have some variatons in the gauging, etc

If you want a reliable .22 pistol with that form factor, get a Ruger SR22 instead.

The SR22 will feed more types of ammo without any hiccups.

My P22, which I've now sold, would FTE/FTF with a lot of brands because the slide on the P22 is too heavy, or creates too much friction, or something.

Go to your LGS, fingerfuck all the guns in that price range, research the best-feeling ones, then boil it down from there.

If you're too lazy to read the stick or do your own research, Glock 19, M&P, some sort of CZ, or a PPQ.

Also consider used guns if you're a poorfag, since there are a lot of older trade-in guns like S&W 59 series that are still good and cheap.

3mm makes a big difference in velocities you will see per given volume of powder. Cross sectional area is 0.25*pi*(d^2) and air resistance is a function of cross sectional area.

Long story short there is a reason why the penetration in sabot rounds fired from tanks are usually ~22mm in diameter.

AR if you have shot before/have some experience
10/22 if you have never shot before

If you don't want to buy a 22 of some sort, go to a range and rent or try theirs, you want to get used to shooting without jumping to intermediate or full caliber to avoid developing bad habits like flinching

If you're limited to shotguns or handguns I'd say shotguns, as you can trap shoot/hunt/have limited HD with it, but if you're paranoid, go handgun for CC/HD/target shooting

PTR is also not a **great** starter gun, roller delayed is somewhat more complicated, so it would be difficult to figure out as a first timer. On top of that, full sized rounds are pretty expensive and you don't want to start flinching from your first gun.

I would have preferred a battle rifle though, what is so hard to figure out about a PTR? Is the kick that different from a bolt action? Is it hard to zero in? I know from research it destroys casings and flings them like 20 feet but that's not a concern.
I originally wanted a cheapo AR-15 as a starter, but I want one with a 20" barrel and a foregrip and ones that can handle those are all in the 1200 dollar range. They also tend to come with 30 round mags and don't ship to Maryland. Fucking Maryland.

Ship it via UPS or FedEx to yourself at your relative's new house. You may have to tell them there's a gun in the box, but you don't have to label the outside or anything (you shouldn't regardless, it's a good way to get your shit stolen).

Depends on the materials used.

If it was a solid aluminum shaft with 1/2-13 threads it would probably fair decently. Though that one it looks like the threads are shorter then their width, which is bad. Your strongest thread is 1.5 times its width. So for a 1/2" thread you'd want 3/4" of engagement.

And if anyone has ever had to deal with an airline and a lost or delayed bag before, you know why I'd rather just ship it.

Assuming you'd probably be indoors (otherwise you'd be shooting), I'd go for something with a shorter handle.

If you want to spend $75 or so, get a spax.

If you want to grab something that's not technically a weapon or something on the cheap that will work fine as a melee weapon, try a welder's chipping hammer.

I keep a few of them scattered around the house. They come in different sizes and the heads can vary a bit, but there's always a cone-shaped pointed end and a flattened dual-beveled edge opposite that. There's no reason you couldn't sharpen either but there really isn't much need.

They feel good in your hand, are sturdy, and have a nice weight.
Plus, dual wielding skill tree unlocked.

For $10, I'm not sure what beats it.

Was wondering if any experienced outdoorsmen could give recommendations on their favorite bolt action rifles... or talk me out of the Ruger Guide Gun.

And if there's a caliber round for a bolt action that won't blow a deer into unsalvageable pieces but will still stop a 350lb black bear or a 150lb mountain cat.

Finally, if I have something in .223/5.56 for small game and a handgun for the odd crazed hillbilly (as well a new rifle for deer/bear/cats), is there any reason I really need a shotgun?

One sees, from time to time in works of fiction, reservists in smaller countries being called up in the event of shit hitting the fan on a global scale and being issued weapons from the last generation of weapons systems, or even the one before that.

What would happen in the event of an unlimited national emergency in the US which required the mobilization of all our reservists? Would we be able to put an M4A1 in the hands of every soldier, or would they end up, in some cases, with stuff from older generations (and, if this is the case, what would that be)?
>>

They make smaller mattocks too, but those chipping hammers look neat as fuck.

May have to look into getting one. The wire handle would be a turnoff only if it keeps it from securing in something like an old school nightstick loop.

Yurotrash here. I want to buy an AR15.
Assuming I can't build my own for legal reasons, what are my best options with the following:
M&P15 Sport 2 - 1000€
Ruger AR556 - 1250€
Mossberg MMR Tactical - 1300€
Windham Weaponry - 1500€

There are better brands out there (Daniel Defense, Schmeisser, Noveske, ADCOR...) but they're all well over 2.5k/3k so no way.

>>33201865
G3s don't care much about mud or sand. Their only real reliability problems are freezing and you need to move up a roller size every 8k rounds or so.

There is a reason you never see horizontally planes blades, like on a mattock, on any other purpose built weapon: the most likely direction of torque when a hit deflects will be to the side, twisting it out of alignment with your swing.

I mean the Marines have only just 2 years ago moved away from the M16A4 so I'm sure those will be put into the hands of reserve units quite easily. I'm sure there's plenty of these still in storage lockers on bases around the country.

>>
Should I get an FAL for my first rifle or an SKS?

So far here's how I see it

FAL:
+/-.308 is a more preferable round but costs more
+++Sexy as fuck
+20 Round magazines
-Mags are expensive
-$1100 buckaroos for a DSA

SKS:
+/- 7.62x39
+Stripper clips look like fun
+Cheaper but still rising in value, might rise more
+Built in bayonet
-Smaller capacity
>>
>>33205791
Odd that the wood wasn't patched.

Depending on the bore, possibly $50 more than what a regular 91/30 goes for.
>>
>>33205814
desu I'd get a Russian SKS soon before they're way out there in price.
I flat out refuse to pay $300+ for a fucking Yugoslav 59/66.

Greetings from hell. I come before the murder/k/ube to beg forgiveness for the circumstances of my birth and to seek guidance in rifle selection. Before me are two options that please the local tyrants. I understand that I can build whatever I want but I would rather have something I can use in a home defense situation without becoming a felon.
>ARES SCR
+more accurate
+less recoil
+cheaper ammo
~retrofuturistic vibes
-reeks of compliance
>Tula SKS
+more powerful
+cheaper
+stabby thing that goes up
~slavaboo vibes
-clipazine loaded

If you've just got money burning a hole in your pocket, I'd go with the FAL. I want one, but I'm poor and a $1100 rifle just isn't something I need bad enough right now. If you're not a poorfag like me, go for it. If money is a concern, however, go with the SKS. You'll be able to afford to shoot it more.

Is a Beretta 92F too cliche for a detective-type character in the 80s?
>>
>>33210344
I have never been to a store that had more 30-06 than 308/7.62x51 on the shelves.

Never seen a police dept use 30-06 (there may be some) but plenty that use 308.

All the military 7.62x51.

Nope. I have it correct. If you're thinking about SHTF, it will be easier to keep a 308 fed than a 30-06.
>>
>>33210390
No matter the era, the two most cliche choices for some kind of detective are a nice-looking snub nose revolver, or a well-kept older warhorse kind of pistol for the era, like a 1911.

If he's a P.I, you could give him something that's either an older era M&P weapon, or a newer but uncommon or unusual weapon. Maybe something like a CZ75, Hi Power, P7, P210, etc.
Older weapons give a character a hard-boiled vibe, like they've been in the business for a while and use what works.
Newer, but unusual or foreign weapons separate the character from typical cops and gives the vibe that they've done their own research or just know more about what they want in a gun than other cops.
Picking a common service pistol for the time makes them more by-the-book and level headed, and more in-line with the cops around them.
>>
>>33210647
Well in the 80s, I want him to be fairly new, but still have been in the business for a little. While later I want to put him in 2017 as much older.

I was thinking for his older incarnation giving him a P320 with an RMR on it, mostly because the 320 has been accepted by the military. That makes it tough and durable like he likes while the RMR is an indication that he wants the best in a gun and will take any advantage he can get.
>>
I don't know much about where to find unique guns. I want to buy a tec 9 but don't know where to look.
>>
>>33210844
Maybe you could give him something like an early production P226 as a young guy, and then either a new production P226 with a bunch of aftermarket stuff or some other newer Sig like the 320.
A new but promising and capable weapon in the early days that becomes renowned for quality and reliability in the modern day.
