Didn't see one so I made one. What are your favorite boots for....
>Operating
>Hiking
>Every day use

I just got a pair of Jungle boots and god damn are these things fucking comfy. Cant wait to operate/hike with them.
>>
>>33163121
Lol. By far the most uncomfortable boot I've ever worn. We were issued these I'm Korea wth the ridge soles and they are absolute shit. I had desert colors in iraq that has ripple soles so it's not the sole. There is just zero padding and that nylon will crease and start digging into your achilles on long range patrols.

I noticed these boots are popular with larpers and military want to be's that never served.

I wear civilian hiking boots because ib hate how every faggot wears military boots every chance they get. Too try hard for me.

Anything Danner are literally the best boots you can buy.
>>
>>33163121
I have a black pair of these. The soles are absolute ass but they are aesthetic as fuck. I might wear them for hiking but not for actual operating
>>
>>33163121
The winterized air force boots are pretty nice. The gortex lining prevents the rough inside from rubbing through your socks.

Salomon QUEST 4D 2 GTX® Men’s Walking Boots

Used by military personnel the world over and not too combat oriented to wear in most civilian settings. Look pretty fucking sexy under a pair of good jeans too.

Every day boots pic related. Georgia boot company. Really the only style of boots I like for every day use because I can slip them on and off. Really comfortable, and I get about an inch of height when I wear them which puts me from a 5'11" midget to a studly 6'.

I don't have operating boots because I'm a civilian, but I keep two pairs of tan Rocky C4T boots for my shitkickers/truck box boots.

Innawoods I just got a pair of Under Armour Speed Freek boots, but I can't attest to their longevity yet. Only been got about 40 miles of trail in them so far (some of which pretty rigorous), but they're light and comfortable. They're not waterproof, which I actually consider a plus for my purposes. Also pretty cheap, relatively speaking.
>>
>>33163560
All those modern hiking boots with their patchwork of thin suede and mesh (or cordura and rubber, which is a lot better), with their synthetic lining and membranes. None of these features are durable. The membrane invariably fails from movement, sweat, dirt, whatever. You can't clean them really thoroughly unless you soak them in water or something. The seams are a weak spot, every one of them. The lining will erode from abrasion. I get that they are comfortable and all, but I still can't get behind them.
Oh, and they also stink from sweat.
>>
>>33163238

Light, and As long as the water doesn't get in above the tongue of the boot your feet will stay dry. Wear them every shift

I agree with you on almost everything you mentioned, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to call bullshit on the stinking of sweat part. Most high end synthetic boots have a Gore-Tex construction meaning they're even better at getting rid of the sweat stink than leathers. But everything else you said is pretty accurate. Although, the things you mentioned are generally more prevalent in low end synthetic boots and almost nonexistent in higher end boots.

The boots pictured have multiple seasons of wilderness trail work and wildland firefighting on them, plus probably 1200 miles hiked in rugged terrain. I'm pretty good about maintenance and honestly for $250 they could shit the bed right now and I'd've gotten my money's worth. However I bought resoleable, rebuildable boots for a reason so here's hoping I get one more season in them before I send them to Danner for that sweet, sweet factory rebuild.

Not OP but Rothco is just another re-branded Chinese knock-off Jungle boot. If you look at real ones vs. the fake ones, it's not hard to see the differences. Look at my pic vs. OP's and you'll see what I mean. Your best bet is to get a pair of issue boots. The ones I always preferred were made by "RO Search", but most of the gov't contract boots are similar. You'll usually pay more for the green ones now because they are usually harder to find new/unused if OD is what you're into.

Loved these. Had a pair I wore a deployment until I walked a literal hole into the sole.

Then I went to supply on home station and got anther pair. I was k9 and we deploy in singles and supply hooked it up big time. so I always went and picked the most expensive shit I could find.

The only downside is I was stationed in Colorado at the time and they aren't insulated enough for walking in snow. I had a pair of danner's insulated with gore tex for that.

I had a pair of pic related that were super comfy but fell apart within three weeks at an RTC. I bought another pair and used them for home station.

Those rocky s2v's and the danners were the best boots I even owned.

Those are the boots I wore through basic and they held to the abuse very well. Once you toss the included "in-soles" and they're broken in they felt great, but the soles like the one in your pic can be a bit slick compared to the ones with "ripple" soles.

Daily reminder that Americans can't make proper boots.
These are my finnish Sievi boots and I've used them every day for the colder halves of the years.
I got them from my uncle and they had already then been used for multiple years and I've had them for 3 or 4 years now I think.
But they just keep going, I have literally no complaints about these boots, they are simply fantastic for both innawoods use and everyday use. They have a nice furr lining and zippered sides.

It's sad how the majority of stitchdown boots have little or no sole cuishioning. The biggest disadvantage with PU foam cushioning is that it ages, but with the soles being replaceable that should be no problem.

I have a pair of used S2Vs. I'd be lying if I said they weren't the ugliest fucking pair of boots I've ever seen, but they're one of the most comfy pairs I've worn.

However, they also have a problem of squeaking when I walk, and the soles slide on pretty much any fucking surface that isn't dirt; I have a pair Ro Search boots that don't slide at all compared to them, and they can be worn as dress shoes too. I've since regulated my S2Vs to dog shit duty when I'm out in the yard or cutting grass.

I liked the C4Ts that I had a couple years ago, so I might go with a pair of C7s or try out those Nike SFBs that everyone is raving about. Belleville's mini-mil boots look good too.

I've been wearing the same pair of 'jungle boots' for close to a decade now. They are my all around boots I wear for just about everything.

Other boots are used depending on weather or activity. The big fucking boots are used to hook into cross country skis.
>>
>>33182091
>>33182148
Sewn soles are easier to replace and also sturdier in the first place.
If the boot is used up by the time the sole needs replacement, that's usually because it was never made to last. Mesh and suede doesn't last, synthetic lining doesn't last. Not that there's anything wrong with that (especially if you don't want to deal with the logistics of replacing soles anyway) but the old concept of a sturdy upper and replaceable soles has merit too. It's just sad when it lacks cushioning, considering how useful and easily implemented it is.

Yeah I just bought some a month and a half ago and they're pretty fucking great. I used to buy chink boots for ~$100 from Fred Meyer and those bitches would fall apart in 9 months or sooner so I figured "fuck it, I'll pay twice as much for some Danner boots because they'll probably last longer". If they last a year without disintegrating I'll be satisfied, but I hope they last way longer and from what I've heard as long as you take care of the leather they will.
>>
>>33183899
Danner will resole your boots and other unknown shit. I've been out since 2014 so I haven't kept up with their warranty policy.

>KIWI leather conditioner
we don't have that here, we have black goo for old stype boots with lots of wmd chemicals, that's it, that's why i made something myself.

that's why inde th eend it's better to just buy good cheap boots made in this country where sometimes i can repair it somehow.

Unfortunately only 4-5 months where i live the temp gets lower de 15ºC daily so that might explain the lack of products for leather boots.

(they say just wash and sometimes put mineral oil on it, and that's it)
>>
>>33184212
I've read arguments against using oil that could go rancid... but nobody seems to be quite sure in the end.
I've got this natural product here:
>Lanolin
>Beeswax
>Castor oil
>Rapeseed oil
>Coconut oil
>Carnauba wax
Lanolin and Beeswax is a very basic mixture I've seen sold.
Paraffin and stearine wax and synthtic oils such as vaseline are also used.
>>
>>33184445
Yeah, i used on my friend's boot but i didn't overkill on oil like i did on my boots, because at the time i didn't want a lot of beeswax on it, so when i end up seeying the damage after two months that the boots was storaged (summer here) it was too late.

Anyway, lesson learned.

Most the time they are old, already worn, beaten to shit and are so used they are starting to fall apart. Ask just about anyone who has had to wear military boots nonstop if they are comfy. They arent. Jungle boots are also a joke unless you legit live in a jungle. Even they are uncomfy to everyone.

Milsurp boots like the jungle boot should only be used for fashion. Other wise buy some solomon boots or some Reebok boots.

S&W boots and Original SWAT are the most comfortable, very strong and they come in lots of different sizes & colors, even if you have wide feet, too, they've got your size with the Original SWAT, you don't need to fool around with any of that "breaking them in" bullshit, either.

S&W are more durable, yet Original SWAT are more comfortable and they look a little bit cooler. I get compliments all the time with both.

Note: My pair of original swats want very moldy-smelly in the inside of the boot after about 9 months. I wore them almost every day, through snow, rain, desert and muck. S&W'S are better, thus far, in most categories.

They're better than most posts ITT for sure, but a pair of custom Nick's or Whites blow Danner the fuck out. Course, once you're buying those you're in a whole nother price bracket and the kinds of people who use those boots are wildland firefighters and linemen who need serious fucking boots.
>>
>>33163238

Da, I got a pair of AF HW boots at Ollie's for $25. Because I had forgotten how awful the issue boots are. The soles are heavy and the body offers no support or padding so you end up feeling like you've got bricks lashed to your feet so any amount of walking or even worse, standing ends up fatiguing your feet. Then the heel cups tend to dig in, eventually leading to blisters and the laces tend to dig into the instep as well.

Personally I've almost entirely gone the way of the slav, with sneakers and track pants. I so have a pair of 5.11 8" ATACs that are quite nice, they're keep my feet warm in northeast winters, cool when hiking inna desert and even remain quite comfortable when wet.

Let me tell you as someone who wears a pair himself, if you have only one or two pairs of boots, you don't want tanker boots. My autism about non-tankers wearing them aside, they are terrible for ankle support. They're marginally better than cowboy boots because the straps secure your feet a bit, but only in actually holding them onto your feet.

Corcoran brand (AKA the only ones you're getting stateside) especially, because of the design of the straps (I'd prefer two bottom straps and one longer at the top), and that they're not actually watertight at the upper seams (and the tongue only covers up to the ankle anyway), and unless you're being stationed or rotating through Korea, you won't get a good pair.

That aside, I wear mine nearly every day to work because it's one of the only tangible traditions this fucking army has.

What does /fit think of lowa combat boot gtx? They seem stiff for rucking or everyday use, basically anything other than mountaineering. Maybe they break in, idk

I see you have the little leather apron things at the bottom of your laces. I never lace those into my boots when I've had the choice, but I hear it's supposed to increase the lifespan of the footwear. Do you have an an opinion on those things?

Malestrom commando boots. I just found them a little while ago on amazon and got myself a pair. In the process of breaking them in right now. At first glance, they seem pretty solid with good stitching, comfy and all that. Leather is meh, and insole is your typical cheap foam insole. If you do get a pair, size half a size up from usgi desert/hot weather boots.

Why does your leather look so supple

It's all about the base coat, and I lace them so they're flexible where they need to be.

When you first polish them you put a coat on, melt it in with a lighter, then buff with a brush, then repeat. Do this three times, then you polish as normal finishing with a brush twice, then last two coats you apply polish, buff with a soft rag and water. From then on you pretty much just need to buff it with a rag and some water and it'll stay shiny and protected.

Dad showed me how to do it when I was like 12 and got my first pair of real leather boots. I buff em twice a week with water and a rag and only apply polish like once a month.

Actually made in Vietnam. Salomon has very good CC at their plant

Frankly if the sole is worn out the rest of the boot is pretty well cooked too. Good midsole support is critical in a hiker or similar purpose boot. If you wear out a sole I can almost promise the midsole is totally collapsed too. Just buy a new pair and get a good supportive boot again

Merrill is totally a budget brand now with dogshit QC. I wouldn't spend any money on them. If you're a north american, look at salomon, oboz, and vasque instead. An extra $20 will get you at least three times the lifespan. The bastards cheapened every material they could. I'm not even convinced that the vibram is alright considering the level of Merrills bumblefuckery

The kiltie?
Protects the boot from the laces, and acts as a brush/debris guard as well, which is pretty crucial for certain uses.

That's what you get for making midsoles out of plastic and cardboard. (Or, to be more fair: for making a non-replaceable part of the shoe a cushioning element.) Leather midsoles don't wear out before the rest of the upper does.
