For $500 you can get quite s few options.
>k31
>m96
>m39
Or almost any non German Mauser, meaning Czech, Yugoslavian, Turkish, polish, or Russian capture.
You can also get an m1903a3 or m1917 if you shop around a bit
>>33160441
>Recommend me a good milsurp bolt action rifle for around $500
You can get a HOWA for that money and you'd end up with an actually good rifle.
>>33160441
you can get pretty much any ww2 bolt rifle with 500 as long as your okay with it not being pristine, collectors grade and all matching. pick a country you like and buy their gun.
>>33161020
2nd this. Don't buy milsurp if you aren't a collector.
>>33160816
Why not just get an ishapore at that point? Or pony up the cash and just shoot .303
>>33161050
3rd on this. There's no worse feeling than fucking up a piece of history
Get a k31 so you can revel in the glory that is 7.5x55 swiss

im with you guys in that its a market for collectors.
what is the consensus on purchasing a well-done sporterized piece?
I passed on a carcano a while ago at a gun show, don't own any sporerized stuff, and i wanted to keep it that way. but this one was obviously done by a skilled hand and i'm kind of kicking myself over it, because I know i'll never find it again.

What matters then is how well it works as a sporting rifle. Some guy who chops only the forestock off a Mosin M91 but leaves the barrel 30" long probably wasn't a very good gun owner.
picked up a k31 from my LGS yesterday, god it is such a honey of a gun paid around $500 (but in a different currency) very nice gun to shoot and great to just rack the bolts back and forward whilst marveling at how very swiss it all is

4thing this, unless the bore is pristine it's not going to be a very good shooter and most milsurps are chambered for a proprietary caliber.
You won't find 8x56r in stores, i haven't 7.7 jap in stores in years.
Only recently did i find 7.62x54r. 8mm mauser seems available.
The most common would be 30-06.

Take off the buttplate.
See if the guy left you a neat gift.
I have a dilemma.
I'm looking at getting either a m44 Mosin Carbine or a SMLE mk 3.
What would you recommend?
>>33163876
m44 cause fireballs
>>33163876
Not a SMLE...

If you can find a German Mauser, good luck, but a Czech or Yugo Mauser will do.. Or a Spanish F8
Fuck Mosin garbage, that's for poor fucks.
>>33164786
>Recommends cheap Mausers
>Says Mosins are for the poor
Hmmmm.
Where are you people still finding k31s for 500?
>>33163876
7.62x54R is more available than .303, so I'd recommend the M44.

Some of the really old rifles, tastefully sportorized, have a certain appeal IMO. There is something endearing about them
