It's not an LCS, it's billed as a frigate. Completely different mission than an LCS, as evidenced by the weapons package. It's going to be a disposable spam ship. That and LCS as a concept is fairly redundant and not cost effective, the jobs it has are already covered. Coastal anti shipping duties fulfilled by corvettes and land based naval aviation. Coastal ASW is also fulfilled by land based naval aviation and supplemented by destroyer borne helicopters. They Chinese especially are not lacking in corvettes or land based sub hunters.

Most importantly they aren't cheap and they are suitable for far fewer roles than a frigate or destroyer.

Kek, two choppers on the Flight IIA Burkes is *not* enough for independent operations without a carrier. One-third rule, especially. You might've noticed how the LCS seems to be 75% chopper pad and hangars by volume. There's a very good reason for that. The rest of it goes to the well deck, which seems short-sighted now, but is a pretty good idea considering that the potential of said well deck is limited only by what new UAVs are designs to fit in it in coming years.

With the addition of the passive towed array they're basically the next-gen ASW escort. Sure, there's a lot we could add - active/passive hull sonar for the shallows, a full jamming/ECM suite, etc, but then they'll get *really* expensive and we'll lose the main benefit the offer now, enough boats to provide ASW pickets for every SAG.

The USN has drones that can be launched from both drone submarines and normal submarines. Surface ships also have lasers, VTOL transports and within a few decades VTOL fighter jets and bombers. And that's just what's unclassified.

While there isn't much backing for sea keeping arguments on a hull that hasn't been built yet, there is little need for a ship of this type in the PLAN and resources would be better used on improving land based naval aviation (as they seem to be doing with y-8). The PLAN has already invested quite a lot into corvettes that are well suited to coastal duties. The best I can figure is that they want to experiment with hull forms while their shipyard prices are low due to the current levels of production.
