First of yes, the 5.56 round was designed to maim, not kill. but you can get ARs chambered in a variety of other calibers, my personal favorite is 458 socom, look into that if you find the AR platform fits you .

As far as AKM pattern weapon is concerned, yes they are inherently inaccurate, there's no way around it. Plus the x39 caliber has a "rainbow" like trajectory with a max effective ranf of maybe 200yds. Lss, It's a hopeless platform, what you've heard is true, look elsewhere.
