Agreed. They Howard Leights also suck if you have glasses on, and they don't take aftermarket gel cups. My Peltor Tactical 6S have been great, especially since I added fancy cooling gel cups. They've been amazing, and I've had them for about 5 years now.

just because he shoots interesting guns and has a friendly youtube channel doesn't make him a paragon of knowledge for safety. you go to his channel for fun videos, not for auditory safety

the great thing about things like this the mountain of scientific research. if you have access to a database like JSTOR or hell, just government organizations like OSHA, there are tons of articles on hearing and sound

you can get 33 nrr plugs and 30 nrr muffs compared to ~23-25 for electronic. i guess if you're in a swat team or something the situational awareness is good but if you're just shooting at a range, I'd take the extra protection, especially so with all the other guns going off and the length of time you're exposed to it

My first earpro was a pair of earmuffs that I stole from woodshop in high school.
Now I use a set of Tasco Golden Eagles that I stole from work, and inside I wear foam earplugs that I also stole from work.
Not until this thread has it occurred to me that I stole literally every piece of hearing protection equipment I have ever used.
>>
>>33144498
Same. I've had EEEEEEEEE for as long as I can remember. My hearing has always been bad around background noise. I work in a machine shop and I can't hear anyone.
>>
Whatever cheapos I have lying around my room. I'm in a band so I always have earplugs lying around, half the time in my back pocket. I have a few attatched to strings in my gun related toolbox that I usually take to the range and wear around my neck as I'm walking in to tip off the ROs that I'm not some retard who's going to end up shooting the ceiling or waving my hand in front of the barrel if I'm not being supervised.

I haven't really looked into muffs but I kind of want to. Plugs work fine for pistol shooting but when in the future I get my hands on some heavier shit I might want to double up with muffs. I find earmuffs uncomfortable but am willing to take suggestions as to which ones might be good for shooting.

>>
>>33143784
Why not both?
>>
>>33144928
This, unless you have to have a conversation with someone next to you on the range, what the fuck are you losing by spending an extra 3 seconds to insert plugs to protect your fucking hearing
>>
>>33143134

For years I've only used the free ear plugs provided to me at work (usually Howard Leight, either the green ones or the yellow/pink ones). One time I bought some howard leight orange ones at CVS that were better than the free ones.

I like plugs because they cut sound much better than muffs, but you can't take them in/out easy, and it takes a few tries to get them in my ears perfect, so I hate having to take them out once they're in. Plus they're weird to talk with them in, I just get all the bass of my voice vibrating my brain. Last year I got a set of the electronic howard leight Impact sport muffs, only got to use them once so far, pretty decent but like other muffs they raise up off my ear with my SKS. Plus it's disorienting getting used to the active bit.
>>
>>33143784
what is wrong with protecting your ears? not to mention some of us already have the EEEEE and would like to lessen any more impact.

Seriously. You can't undo the damage. After 9 years of working as a mechanic in dealerships, I'm surprised my hearing isn't more damaged than it is. I dunno how bad I am compared to how I used to be, but I can hear things others can't, so I guess I'm still doing pretty good. Air hammers and impacts are a hell of a drug

>mfw 2 years ago I started wearing ear plugs to concerts/shows

>>I sleep with a fan or space heater on and secretly wonder if it's the silence that bothers me, or because I don't want to hear the "eeeeeeee" since I never have and never want to
You don't want to, seriously. I live with it every day. You're doing god's work anon
>>
>>33144953
It depends on what kind of plugs you are using, the square ones are weird but the tapered ones are very comfortable if you roll them up a bit first before sticking them in. Like I said earlier in the thread I'm in a band so I'm used to wearing them for long periods of time on stage and in the van to block out my bandmates' snoring.

Muffs on the other hand hurt the outer rim of my ear like a bitch after like 30 minutes of wearing them.
>>
>>33143134
I use peltor muffs and their tri-flange plugs. I don't know shit about what good ear-pro is, so I just got what was cheap
>>
>>33145486
Tinnitus fucking sucks. I don't know how it started, but I've had it since I was a kid, and now I have to sleep with some kind of background noise if I'm not dead tired. If not, it's EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE all the way to sleep.
>>
>>33146078
I've had it since I was a kid too, far before any exposure to firearms or loud music. Guess I'll just live with it until either I die, or medical science advances and everyone has bionic hearing installed in their head. I wear glasses too so I'm still waiting for those 1x8 power diamond retinas.

I don't, period.

When the real world comes at you, and a tactical firefight suddenly unfurls before your eyes, you won't have ear protectors.

Being proficient with your weapon system includes acclimation to its audio profile. And when a prowler gets into your house, you're gonna need to have all your senses on point to locate him, and take him down.

I used to use what was provided to me at shooting ranges, which were muffs, but the last several times i have elected to use the foam inserts because: They are more comfortable than what was provided to me at the range, and they offer higher NRR(32).
From my research, the NRR doesn't scale linearly, every extra point in the NRR adds a lot. In the future i am thinking of getting an earbud insert with earmuff combo.

IDK man, seems like you're paying a shit ton of money for the device to have options/be comfortable than it is to protect your ears.

Looking at most of the sport ear products, they seem to have a pretty low average NRR rating.
