GPs are completely covered liability-wise under the law, at least in NSW. The report they have to give is also about your current state, not what you were like in the past.

No idea, but when you tick that box, they send you a form that allows the doctor to share medical information with the gun registry, and a sealed envelope like what you have when you get a referral. The sealed envelope basically outlines all the information they're requesting.

On the form that I filled out to let the doctor pass on the medical information, it outlined the doctor's legal liabilities and responsibilities. I forgot to photocopy my form, so I don't know if the doctor was covered under state or federal law, but probably state, I doubt it'd be much different from state to state though, and is probably only limited to usual doctor stuff like immediate threats of violence or self-harm.
