Looking to build/buy a new precision rifle. What is the "best" precision caliber out there? Not just in terms of accuracy though, please consider availability, price, and of course overall accuracy.
>>
9mm
>>
>>33134887
300WM if you give a single metric shit about price. Otherwise, .408 Cheytac and .338 Lapua both do wonderful jobs and putting holes in paper from very far away.

Personally, I can't even outshoot match grade 30-06, so make sure you can out shoot your rifle before moving up in price and such. If you can't fuck up shit with a 300 win mag at 800 yards, then you won't fuck shit up with a 338 Lapua at >1,000.
>>
If your going precision wont you be handloading so price is going to be fairly negleble.

Target shooting?
Hunting?

Range?

How long is my piece of string
>>
>availability, price, and of course overall accuracy

6.5 Creedmoor, HANDS DOWN

Or .308 match if you're a poor fag with less range

Or .338 Lapua Magnum if you're a richfag, and want slightly more power, with slightly less accuracy than 6.5

If you're just getting into long range shooting get yourself a savage or Tikka in .308 to cut your teeth before you dive head first into the deep end.

Get back to your call of duty kiddo.

Your photo is already god's perfect accuracy caliber though, in a short action at least. Use that. It's the best. Forget everything else.

Alternatively, 6.5x55 Swede is basically the long action version of 6.5 Mememoor. I have a post-war K98 that I turned into a 6.5 Swede and it's fuckin awesome. Total cost was under $600 but I did all the work myself.

Target. I just don't feel like buying a shitty mid tier rifle and end up buying an expensive rifle and end up essentially having wasted a bunch of money I could have used for ammo if I had waited patiently and saved up.
>>
>>33134963
Creedmoor or Swede, dude. 6.5mm bullets are king.

>>
>>33134887
6.5 creedmoor, hands down.

>same length as .308, with FAR better ballistics, and lower cartridge weight
>comparable external ballistics to .300WM, but with longer barrel life, shorter action length, lighter overall rifle
>compatible with AR-10 lowers
>wide range of bullet types available

The meme is real.

I've personally killed several swedish moose at distances of 4-500 meters with it

If you're going for the precision meme you should just go all the way and start reloading some meme caliber that nobody has ever heard of. And then extensively shitpost how it's the best shit around

Given that Op hasn't told us enough info to give a real answer I'm going to say 6.5 Grendel. Is cheap to pink with, you get a long barrel life compared to super high speed calibers, it's very accurate, it's got a short/fat powder stack, and it's low recoil. Even with a 16" barrel you can stretch it out to 1000 yards.
>>
>>33134887
.22 loudenboomer.
>>
>>33135681
I've been looking into 6.5x47 for a while now, never knew how dominant it was over the creedmoor.
>>
>>33135666
6mmBR is the best. Fight me
>>
>>33136070
Your close, 6mmLBC
.240 tomahawk would also be acceptable if you wanted to use 6.8spc components for a base.
>>
Savage 10fcp-sr in 6.5 Creedmoor, 24" barrel, Vortex PST 6-24 EBR2C, B&C/McMillan/whatever stock or chassis

RCBS Rock chucker, Lee 4 die set, Lapua small primer brass, H4350, 140 ELD-M bullets, Brass tumbler, ChargeMaster 1500 (or two).

Go shoot out a barrel learning how to properly shoot, do load development and having a good time. The advantages of 6.5 Creedmoor are: good ballistics vs cost & recoil.
>>
>>33136094

Get a Tikka, have some self respect

NF's don't have the best of glass and are priced due to warranty and military contracts. Tikka's are nice but needing a gunsmith to rebarrel. Granted the 6.5 24" CTR is a nice option but ~double the price of the fcp-sr

That would involve supporting the tacti-fudds who push that irredeemable piece of shit caliber.
>>
>>33136171
The CTR has some refinements over most out of the box rifles.
NF isnt the best glass, well you could argue that the BEAST or ATACR are up in that category, but the reticle on the vortexes breaks free and spins too often for my tastes, and the turrets arent as good.

Though the best answer is to hit up the snipershide optics PX and see what you can pick up there for cheap.

Some may have seen the light, happen to be sitting on some parts and components. I do get a good laugh when doing research on things and seeing "6.8spc will be the military caliber of choice within 15 years" on forums, and it was posted like seven years ago.

My ruger precision in 6.5 creed is amazingly accurate. Ammo is fairly inexpensive also
>>
>>33136114

Agree. Savage....isn't a precision tool. Neither, really, is Tikka; although it's a good starting point.

If you get real about it, and take your development seriously, you're looking at a Model 70 action with a new barrel, and a custom stock.

if you want pure accuracy, the 6mm PPC is the deal
>>
>>33138690
I really can't take those guys seriously. I mean, I get that the only thing it's really doing is removing the shooter from the equation, so it still takes alot of understanding of the factors that go into accuracy, but still. Just fucking lame
>>

>>
>>33134923
Handloading is cheaper than buying match grade ammo friendo. Ultimately more accurate too.
>>
>>33139052
On the positive side it's an effective and scientific way to purely measure the qualities of the cartridge and its components.

Lots of unbiased ballistics data with no room for error that can attributed to the shooter.
>>
>>33135694
Thats a slippery slope. There are like 3 companies that do the ARs right and only are handful of bolt guns
>>
>>33136204
Heavy 6.8spc is great! Within it very narrow niche. Which now is really only hunting and as a parent case.
>>
>>33135666
Start with 7.35 Carcano. Make some irrelevant minor change, rename it .289 Mediterranean and shit up every forum you can find.
>>
>>33139396
Don't forget to harass manufacturers to chamber rifles in said cartridge and be sure to let everyone know you've done so while calling the manufacturers turds for showing no interest.

6mm PPC is most accurate. It would probably be cheap if you handload.
>>
>>33134887

What kind of shooting ranges do you have available to you?

If you only have a few hundred meters to play with, just get a .308. Otherwise, 6.5 creed.
>>
>>33138604
Care to expand on that? I've seen Savages shoot better than most rifles out there.
>>
>>33144491
Keep in mind I think he was talking about "splitting hairs" level of accuracy, you can't really compare a 1300$ savage to a custom rifle with nearly triple the cost. If you define precise as ~ 1 MOA or slightly better then the Savage/ tikka is fine. If you want sub half moa constantly , they wont cut the mustard without becoming "custom rifle" level cost, and at that point you really need to look at the strength of each action.

I've had fantastic luck with my recent grendel build.

Odin works makes a solid barrel / bcg combo for not a lot of money.

Be prepared for a bit of work to get it reliable.

Finally joined a range with longer ranges (600 yards) So I'm looking for a scope to that would be fun to mess around with. I found this on Midway
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/772363/vortex-optics-viper-rifle-scope-30mm-tube-65-20x-44mm-side-focus-reticle-matte
I imagine it would be fine for 600 yards if I do my part. Any other suggestions for a $500 scope?

King for up to 1400 yards. Beyond that 338 lapua is almighty ruler.

>>
>>33145765
That was only 100 yards, but I've run it to 500 so far with no issues on steel. I'm going to stretch it to 750 this coming weekend.
>>
>>33145132
I wouldn't. For a BDC reticule you really need first focal plane, which that scope isnt. It would be a waste for at least that much. You would be better served with turret adjustments as well. Just easier to see, but not necessarily vital
