Has anybody ever tried out a Type 81? Are there any in the US, or did they only manage to make it to Canada?
They look like a neat Chinese equivalent of the Vz58.
There's less than a dozen in the US.
They won't enter production for the Canadian contract until July.

And even then, I'm not confident they'll be shipped up here for a good, long while.

can we at least assume that if they are shipped they will be functional?
I kind of want to order one but china quality control stories scare me

I've never heard any problems with Norinco SKS45s or MAK90s.

We can safely assume, but personally I wouldn't get one before hearing what others have to say about it. I'd rather just save a bit extra and pick up a Vz58

About 20 Type 81Ss and 3 EM356s (5.56mm Type 81) were imported for the 1989 SHOW Show before the importation ban was placed by Bush 41 in February 1989. The EM356s were literally tool room prototypes and didn't even come with magazines.
