It really is. The most spatially and energy efficient pistol cartridge ever designed. Natrually truncated, naturally high sectional density - proportions that are optimal for grip fed magazines. People call 40 a compromise but it's really a streamlining of previously existing principles.

I think it's too good for its time, like Bach, not appreciated in its heyday but to be adulated for generations to come.

It's all true, look at the numbers. They are readily available, compare capacity/energy/crush cavity/ barrier penetration/ relations between the 40 and all comers, it wins.

Ok .357Sig can give it a run for it's money but I think we're splitting hairs because .357Sig is just 40S&W pressures with lighter - higher section density but slimmer rounds.

9mm to .40 seems to be a noticeable bump in penetration and expansion.

.40 to .45 seems to be pretty similar performance, disregarding the .45 Winchester 230gr Ranger.

Eh I figured as much, just wanted to be sure though. some of the shit you read online makes it out as if .40 glocks will beat themselves to shit in a relatively short amount of time because they weren't originally built for .40, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense if you look at the standard pressures of both rounds and consider that glock has gotten more .40 friendly with each generation.

It's an impractical round for self defense. You'll over-penetrate 10 times out of 10.

I think he's referring to the example at 16:28 where the person got shot with 2 .40 hollow points center mass and lived. I don't really know why this video keeps getting posted, though; I don't think anyone doubts that rifles are capable of doing more damage than pistols, but in this video there's an example of a woman blowing the fuck out of her jaw with a rifle and survived. Also, the Dr. mentioned how the 5.56 through the leg example would've looked like an ice-pick injury had the round not tumbled. The two examples he used to exemplify the ballistics of rifles (JFK and that other dude) were headshots, which probably would've had a similar outcome with a pistol caliber desu. This presentation is centered around how to deal with gunshot wounds during surgery and whatnot, and the examples he uses have more to do with shock value than providing any sort of objective information regarding ballistics. My biggest takeaway is that bullets of ANY sort, pistol or otherwise, have the potential to be shit manstoppers if you don't hit vital structures.

First time shooting today and something that is irking me is that one of the clerks told me that I wouldn't like .40 when I told him I wanted to try 40 next, but didn't go into any detail. 40 seems awesome to me. Manageable, high cap, more energy and bigger mass than 9mm. So, exactly what is not to like?

Wow a huge non-issue, totally got me :)

I like .40, it's great for shooting completion in the Major categories. I just think most shooters will be more effective with a decent 9mm round because of shot placement, easy follow-up shots, less muzzle flip. Do the benefits of using .40 over 9mm outweigh the cons? Probably not and people are moving en masse back towards 9mm, but .40 is still a very lethal round that can achieve decent penetration.
