It's a 100w LED chip. Looks like this model or something similar:

That one is rated at 10k lumen. There's debate over how accurate those ratings are on these types of chips.

Without proper cooling, it will heat up until failure. I don't really have a more scientific answer than that, l just know heatsinks for them are very common.
You can just google "100w LED" followed by flashlight, project, DIY, or any other term that suits what you'd like to know and there will be tons of stuff including build logs and kits.
Some guy put 10 of them together in an array. It's on youtube.

It's made with one of those fleabay 100 watt LEDs, two upconverter, and a custom controller board I designed and etched.

The upconverters take the 12ish volts of the battery and jump it up to 32 volts, at which point the power is switched by the controller for different brightness and shit. The controller is pretty basic, just an attiny doing PWM control for a mosfet and checking if the battery voltage is below a cutoff.
