Standard infantry tactics call for things outside of traditional assault rifle range to be engaged with artillery or air assets. This is not always possible, as afganistan has shown.

Cartridge proposals like the .264 USA have shown a desire for something inbetween an intermediate cartridge and full power cartridges, and intermediate power if you will. This is likely where the future of the battle rifle lies.
