Object 279 Kotin (Oбъeкт 279 Кoтин) was a Soviet experimental heavy tank developed at the end of 1959.
This special purpose tank was intended to fight on cross country terrain, inaccessible to conventional tanks, acting as a heavy breakthrough tank, and if necessary withstanding even the shockwave of a nuclear explosion. It was planned as a tank of the Supreme Command Reserve

Most modern tanks are already resistant to nuclear blasts including neutron bombs. It is one of the reasons that neutron bombs fell out of favor.
Surprisingly tank armor can stop acute radiation.

But infantry on the move are toast to neutron bombs. Still in arsenal because tanks without infantry are weak.
>>33112875
But cannot cross a lot of bridges. Too heavy, too wide and too slow. Given up in favor of MBTs that did not require very special snowflake battlefield conditions to be successful. Also apparently tracks were vulnerable to fairly small mines.
>>33114321
If infanrty dies the enemies forces in the same area will die as well. All thats left is tank on tank action.

>implying its not also a submarine
>>33115085
True. There's no way that infantry could be rapidly deployed after the bombs go off. No way at all.
>>33112875
Looks like a UFO duct taped to a tank.

It is like the soviet union in general, could be interesting in theory, but sucks horribly in reality.

New anon In the ring, the bombed nation would have lost a solid ammount of their infantry while the bombers are waiting just out of range.
The surviving bombee's would be heavily heavily outnumbered.
Fucking idiot
>>33116495
how would this ever be viable
ever
>>33116519
I guess it would solve refueling problems.
>>33114071
I'm pretty sure in the case of Object 279 they had the actual blastwave of the nearby explosion in mind, not radiation protection which is indeed common for every tank.
>>33116579
Based on the design I would assume so. Very streamlined, and I guess their main goal would be to point towards the blast.

Yes, one of the inner ones is blockaded, now go and fix that.

Idea behind neutron bombs in defensive use is folks on defense can be prepared to survive a neutron bomb. Infantry on move are not dug in and have few options to defend against them.
So when the enemy tanks advance they are advancing into your combined arms defense.
Also you usually don't plan to nuke your own troops.
>>33114071
Modern tanks can't withstood been flipped over.
>including neutron bombs. It is one of the reasons that neutron bombs fell out of favor.
NATO tanks have no neutron protection. MBT-70 was supposed to have very high protection against neutrons and overall NBC protection but you know the history. It was replaced by Abram tank which NBC protection consist of crew gas masks lul.
>Surprisingly tank armor can stop acute radiation.
No it doesn't
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MBT-70
>For protection against neutron radiation a 15 to 20 cm thick layer of polythene was installed around the crew compartment.
