Went to the dmz in 06 while stationed in Korea. North Korean troops were emaciated, unarmed except for what I'm assuming were officers with old ass shit, and really small and silly looking in retarded uniforms.

I was there when they successfully detonated their first nuke and the military didn't care. I was downtown getting drunk the same day. Nobody takes them seriously and the South would absolutely stomp them out of existence.

It's the same with any totalitarian state. Nobody is going to act on their own for fear of reprisal, either to themselves or their families. And the dictators keep a few people extremely loyal to them (Gestapo, KGB, NSA etc) looking around to make sure people know there are eyes and ears everywhere. This basically makes it impossible to conspire. Not to mention the generals and stuff get to live very comfy lives. They have no real incentive to revolt.

You make sure the people high up are benefitting from the system too much to want to damage it, the people close to them to fear for their families too much to do anything, and the people far away to believe in the cult of personality.

In the book 1984 one of the big reveals was that the two way television actually only gets used to spy on the inner circle members, not the commoner.
