I've owned both the 5.11 Recons and A.T.A.C 8" Side-Zip in both Suede and Black.

I don't want to bash on 5.11 at all, but the recon started falling apart after just one year of medium to heavy use, mostly hiking and running.

I must stress that I put my footwear through absolute shit due to the nature of my job, which proves in a way that 5.11 isn't actually all that bad.

Personally, I'd get the A.T.A.C 8" Side-Zip in Coyote Tan if you're looking for both a comfortable yet versatile boot.

Attached photo is A.T.A.C 8" Black, damn good pair of boots for the price.

I truly and honestly don't know why people like high cut boots when you look at the modern low and mid cut offerings.

If you don't mind a heavy boot, ASOLOs are fucking tanks when it comes to abuse and harsh conditions.

As someone who needs 670-1 boots, I 100% agree. 8' boots are annoying as fuck if you don't need them. 5'-6' are perfect if you actually need the ankle support.
