Looking to get my first AR soon, any suggestions? I am an avid handgun shooter and regularly compete in GSSF. I Just never entered the long gun world. What is /k/ recommendation?

Build it
if not willing to build it
BCM or LMT

I'd say build, theres millions of YouTube videos out there showing you how to build, especially for under 500 bucks. What state do you live in OP?
>>
>>33096388
Don't do it. AR's are so unreliable. They are pretty much junk that get men killed.

Get a fucking AK47. They are better in every way.

>>33097156

buy an FAL or variant faggot

Faggots. All of you.

COLT LE6920

FACT: Gold standard for a reason, many reasons actually.

Carbine length gas system on a 16 barrel = FAIL

:)

>>33096388
For real though OP. get something with an adjustable stock and a 20in barrel.

Do not listen to the memes about 1:7 twist. You only need that shit for tracers and heavy ass shit that you will never shoot.

Personally, I would also recommend a pencil barrel. but thats just me projecting what I plan on building next.
>>
>>33097423
An A4 clone would be a good first AR

>>
>>33096388
Why get a plastic toy gun? Get a Mini-14. It will hold it's value over the years and will out perform just about every AR variant out there, except the expensive hand-machined brands like LMT ($2,600) and Colt ($1,800)
>>
aero ac-15m

$550 or so, mid length gas system, good quality
>>
>>33097369
fudd myths. Stop shitposting

I own an AR15A4. My dad has a 16" cmmg carbine and an aero precision 18" rifle. He always comments on how the buffer spring and full gas system makes the recoil a lot less sharp for bench shooting. Personally I'm gonna build a 14.5" SOPMOD clone because the 20" is horrible for maneuvering in tight spaces
>>
>>33097509
>mini-14
>living in a state that does not have an assault weapons ban.

Pick one,
If you lived in Cali or Jew York, sure.

but they just aren't that great. Don't get me wrong, they are cool as shit, but whats the point?

AR 15's are way cheaper, lighter, better, more aftermarket parts.

Also, it doesn't have expensive ass proprietary mags.
>>
>>33097535
Carbine gas on 16" is less than ideal, especially when you throw in gas ports that might be off some, lighter semi
auto BCG's and the variation in ammo. The longer the barrel, up until you need a rifle length gas system, the more
over-gassed it is and the faster the BCG is moving which isn't a good thing(usually). Hence H buffers and H1 thorough however
many there are now. The middy gas was developed for a reason, and to tame the ungodly
ferocious recoil of the mighty cannon that is .223 ain't it. Lot of 16" carbines in the world and they work fine, but they aren't ideal.
Short of parts compatibility which in the case of the gas tube isn't a big deal in my book, there is no good reason these days
to want a 16" carbine over a middy.
>>
>>33097559
>aero ac-15m as mentioned above

Not $550, $750 unless you buy the stripped version with no mag and then sink $200 into it to make it usable.

I can get a Mini-14 for $675 at my Wal-Mart. 30 rd mags are $50 and made of metal, not plastic

I have a S&W M&P 15 Sport that I am quite pleased with. Low weight, good value, no malfunctions so far, and minute-of-armadillo accuracy.
>>
>>33097620
Well my le6920 was designed, factory built, assembled and tested by Colt. So i think i'm fine.
>>
Go to a gun shop, Let them put one together for you and skip the whole shit show of replacing parts later down the road

I've never seen them at the price. I would consider getting one if they were that cheap here.

I'd suggest Kendos gunshop.

the two things you're going to swap out anyway? why pay extra for that?
>>
>>33097620
>they aren't ideal
Nothing less than a rifle length is ideal with the stoner system.

Middies and carbines bolts both fail at ridiculous round counts, advances in metallurgy is the only cure for this.

>there is no good reason these days to want a 16" carbine over a middy

I would say very cold conditions is a good reason, both Canada and Norway seem to think so.
>>
>>33097756
I didn't say it was a bad thing, just wanted to point out that you are not getting an AR for $550. I think $700-$750 is really the lowest you can go and still get the rifle with sights and a couple mags.

Outside of building one yourself that is.
>>
>>33097837
Canada and Norway run carbine length due to the integrated barrel mounts

>get flat top receiver (A2 post is just annoying)
>put rds on it
>put magpul furniture on it

then you have the upper receiver from the stock rifle that you can add a lower onto and youll have 2 ARs
just dont buy an AR and not shoot it and add a whole bunch of shit you think youll need

i have a bog ol box of
>vertical grips
>handstops
>mag couplers
>cheek weld saddle

The Saint is like 10 years too late to the market. Plus it's a collab with BCM, which means you could have just got a real BCM to begin with.
>>
>>33098030

this.

Springfield just saw what plebs put on their rifles (with the exception of the thingy in the lower which puts tension on the upper so it wont wobble) and priced it at an entry level price point

tl;dr the saint isnt anything new, especially when people are just buying lowers now and adding their own shit to it

Just built my first for about $470, and the best part id I got to pick exactly what parts I wanted to didn't have to pay for garbage shit that I was gonna end up replacing anyway.
Granted that was taking advantage of Palmetto State's weekend deals (which I highly recommend), but it's still a complete rifle for under $500, built exactly the way I want, and I get the satisfaction of knowing that I built it myself.

Daniel Defense is a solid choice too. If you keep an eye out on GunBroker you can get one for $600-$700 under MSRP.
