I've got a CZ-452 sitting at a buddies place until I get the cash to buy a safe and get my license. Gave him the money for it, it's on his license.

Neat little gun to shoot, would be nice to shoot it more than once a few months but being broke does that.

I got my license last Friday and I applied on the 30th of December, all came so quick.

I'm a student, but I don't drink or smoke like all the other millennial fags, so it isn't too hard to save money. I can save $100 a week if I try to.

The rifle is a Howa 1500 in .223 with a 20" heavy barrel ("varmint barrel"). It was only $600 for the rifle, $225 for the scope, $40 for the rings, and $150 for the bipod. I also got lens caps for like $70 and a kydex cheek rest for $50 (installing this weekend).
I might also get a floor plate to accept AICS mags, but that'll be $140 and isn't in commercial production yet.

I got mine with a neat fixed 4x scope for about 800$ all up, which I thought was a fucking bargain.

Not sure about VIC but if it's like QLD, then it's probably best to do the following:
>Join SSAA (Sporting Shooters Association of Australia) for $85 for a year
>Complete a Cat. A/B safety course delivered by SSAA, I think this is like $67 for beginners
>Apply for the license with the genuine reason as "sports target shooting", using your SSAA membership as proof. I paid for 3 years of licensing which was/is $195 in QLD
>Apply for a PTA (permit to acquire) for your first weapon, this is like $35 in QLD

You'll need a safe, they're about $150-200 for a 3-5 gun safe. You CAN store it in a licensed friend's safe, however.

A Howa 1500 is a good, budget rifle that looks like it's worth a lot more than it really is. You can get it set up and ready to fire for close to $1000 (depending on your local pricing).
My rifle is >>33090569, was about $1135, and $90 for a rifle bag (though you can get less).
There are other costs too like cleaning kits but that's not that much more ($150 tops).

tl;dr budget yourself about $1500, or $1700 if you don't have a safe.

Getting your first gun is a great fucking feeling. Just knowing that you aren't completely defenseless in case some serious shit goes down, and just being able to sit there and pop off rounds into paper is a great feeling.

I also recently joined the club. Never even fired a gun until July of 2016, now I own three. Going to get a .22 next, then a 12 guage.

I personally think the Howa 1500 is one of the best stock actions you can buy. I'm a little scared of how little you spent on your scope but you can always upgrade that later.

Do you know what twist your barrel is?

.223 is available in a pretty wide range of bullet styles and weights. Everything from super fast 35gr NTX to heavy 77gr BTHP. If possible you should test out as many loads as you can to see which shoots best in your rifle. You'd be amazed at how different even identical guns shoot various rounds.
