>Possibly one of the last of the Five Eyes countries to retain a Second World War era handgun, the Canadian Forces announced plans to begin the solicitation and testing process of finding a handgun to replace the currently issued 9x19mm Browning Hi-Powers.

>>
>>33090198

Oh, they definitely make good product. I also think it's logical for us to produce our own arms domestically. HOWEVER, it does significantly reduce the potential designs we can adopt as not every company will want to sell all the documents and stuff required to manufacture the firearms themselves.

Hell, why not just modernize an existing, proven design?
>>
>>33090029
Nah its changing. They're more than likely gonna go with glocks due to the whole current modernisation effort. But everything happens slowly here so we'll probably see them in 2030

>>
>>33090413

I hear it's really the magazines that are fucked up.

I'd still buy a "previously loved" Inglis just for the history.
>>
>>33090413
I've got a 1933 Colt government model (1911) that spent it's life as a police issue sidearm in Argentina.
That gun still works fine.
I highly doubt the Canucks could out do the horrors that gun has been through.
>>
>>33090449

Most of the guns have been canibalised for parts. Of the functioning sidearms, most are unmatching.

These guns were made during ww2 to equip canadian soliders prior to d-day. they were not manufactured with a service life of 80 years in mind.

>>
>>33090016
These guns are all absolutely trashed, they barely function at all. They should have been replaced decades ago.
Moreover, it won't happen anyways. A while ago the idea of selling surplus Inglis Hi-Powers second-hand was discussed as a way to save a bit of money, but the government was adamant that they would never consider anything other than paying to have them destroyed because "muh deadly army guns on the street"
As if I couldn't just go buy a Glock that actually works if I wanted a gun to commit crimes with

Got out of the Canadian Army 7 years ago and they were saying they were going to replace the BHP back then.

It'll never happen.

That being said medics and some other occupations got Sig 226s which were vastly superior to BHPs.

The Browning was pretty fucking useless in Afghanistan as the tiniest amount of dust & grit was enough to cause misfeeds. Leave it in a holster and go on a patrol for a few hours and it would collect enough dust from the wind to become stiff & gritty. Probably not the fault of the design so much as the extreme age and wear of the pistols. Many of them were basically bare metal they were so heavily worn.
>>
>>33095040
>A while ago the idea of selling surplus Inglis Hi-Powers second-hand

You don't want them. They're all complete shit at this point.
>>
>>33095254
I know, but if they were cheap enough (I mean like dirt cheap, as they should be) it could be worth getting one just as a historical artifact, not as something to actually shoot (I have working guns for that)
>>

I had a little laugh at the armourer in the comments saying that they've been issuing P225s more widely in recent years because they literally could not find enough cobbled-together Hi Powers that actually worked to equip everybody who is supposed to get a pistol.

Assuming they actually make a purchase (which I don't think will happen), I could see them going with a CZ of some kind. Cheap, decent, and not American (which is a very high priority for Liberals).

Of course if they manage to find someone in Quebec who claims they can manufacture a pistol all bets are off.
>>
>>33095463
They would also be able to fulfill their otherwise impossible demand for it to be made by Colt Canada, since they can just make it themselves if they feel like it without paying anybody

>>
Either a P226 or 225 seeing as several branches are using the Sigs. That or maybe a Glock of sorts. Something already in use in the Armed Forces
>>
>>33095522
>demand for it to be made by Colt Canada
Oh wow. I guess that means they'll build a new factory in Quebec for 9mm 1911s. It'll take 12 years and $7 billion, and the military will be disbanded before the first pistol is delivered.
>>
>>33095463
>Of course if they manage to find someone in Quebec who claims they can manufacture a pistol all bets are off.

All firearms used by the forces must *now* be made by Colt Canada, CF's designated "centre of excellence" or w.e. they call it.

They have a quasi legal monopoly that scares all firearms manufacturers away like the plague.

Just another obstacle in addition to the unending levels of bureaucracies.

>>
>>33095932
Because ours are so old that any new ones wouldn't be parts compatible, and if you have to replace them all anyways why stick with the same outdated design?
I love Hi Powers, but you can't pretend they're not totally outdated in military use.
>>
>>33095963
Shut up, there's literally nothing wrong with the Hi-Power anymore. Our soldiers are just too retarded to appreciate the design when everyone from the last 30 years has been sucking on the striker fire's thumb.

Honestly pistols aren't that important to a military, they can just go and buy a contract for a the Glock 17M, the Sig P320, the Beretta 92A1, or whatever, not even really bother trialing them, they can roll the dice on them, all of them are more than good enough (proven by numerous military & police contracts, on top of worldwide commercial sales) and will fill their sidearm needs for decades and decades, they're tried and true, and for what little use they will see the Maples will appreciate them just fine.

>>33089963
Honestly this could work too, imagine Hi-Powers with Novak sights, disconnect removed, a forward rail, maybe an aluminum frame. Change the frame slightly to make 17 rounds fit flush and ask MecGar to make your magazines, then give the gun a nice matte two-tone finish with cerakote (gray and black, perhaps) and rubberized plastic grips in an OD or foliage green color. Optionally a combat style hammer and enlarged slide release.

They know the system of this pistol works and everyone in the armed forces are already familiar with the pistol, they wouldn't have to do any kind of significant retraining. "Hey, here's the same kind of pistol we had but brand new and upgraded, you know how it works, eh."

>>33090038
Get raked.
>>
>>33095973
>Nothing wrong with the Hi Power
It is not the pinnacle of handgun technology anymore anon. Whether you like guns like Glocks or not, they are objectively superior to the Hi Power in pretty much every metric as a widespread military issue sidearm.

We can literally buy firearms online and have it shipped to your doorstep within the week no need for FFL transfers.

However when it comes to Background checks vs PAL/RPAL, its sorta the same.

PAL/RPAL wins by a slight margin due to the speed of it being checked instantaneously/ one time license ordeal vs the ATF 4473 forms for each purchase

Canucks lose out on magazines and classification though. With a slight edge of variety of imports due to 99r compliance in the US
