This is Japanese Comiket.

I just wondering. What is the effect of explosive device if they detonated in the middle of this otaku crowd? total 100% casualty or the explosive force will be absorbed by most of the crowd? For example, what if this thing exploded in middle of the crowd:-

1) Hand grenade
2) 40mm grenade round
3) 60mm mortar
4) 81mm mortar
5) 120mm mortar
6) 155mm artillery shell

Typically, most munitions come with a casualty producing radius published in the literature.

Fortunately, Japan is a gun free zone, so there is no risk of such an event taking place.

It'll be very orderly

But, I mean in tightly packed crowd, will the force will reach its maximum casualty radius or being reduced because of crowd?
>>
>>33088567
After a short range the primary killer will be fragmentation and not blast overpressure, I would assume that most frags stop after penetrating one or two bodies

Hmm..That's a good point. Thanks Anon!
>>
>>33088567
Unlikely. These weapons are designed to kill mainly through fragmentation. For example, the 155mm has a kill radius of 50m, however, in a tightly packed crowd most of the fragments will be stopped long before that.

Agree.. Kinda forget that the keyword is 'fragmentation' not blast or explosive. Point taken.

airburst frag is the soloution to bodies stopping frag

155mm you're talking 1lb chunks of razor sharp jagged shrapnel, you're tearing the first 10 people around impact into fine paste, the next 20 into ground beef and chunks of limb, and everyone else in OP's pic is a casualty
>>
>>33090510
Pressure grenades are terrible in open areas. Remember that Hitler survived a suitcase bomb because it went off in an open room instead of an enclosed bunker.
>>
>>33088559

That's pretty cool.

Take note that this heavily depends on the stature of the population. A grenade in a tightly packed American crowd is likely to kill only three people while in Japan it could result in as many as 300 deaths.
>>
>>33088559
Japanese discipline. This is why they won the Pacific War.
>>
>>33090677
This is spot on, thinking that a 155 mm shell wouldn't mortally injure or severely incapacitate everybody in that square is rubbish. I'd also imagine the pure force of the blast liquefying internals of anything not hit by shrapnel in a decent part of the area.

As for the rest, search up lethal radius and estimate. The grenades and 60 mm mortar will take out a dozen or two dozen people, the other mortars a few dozen.

What's the difference? Does WP are more effective for maximum casualty in tightly packed crowd than HE-FRAG?

>frag relies slightly on blast and mostly on shrapnel/fragments to kill, both of which have very limited ranges with such small charges
>WP relies on burning and/or choking with its chemical cloud, which is unhindered by large amounts of people the same way frag is

Remember : it's not a war crime if you're not killing humans

155mm airburst https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNCUeItvovs&feature=youtu.be&t=17
I highly doubt you'll be able to achieve 100% casualty even with 155mm airburst because no matter how many fragments you have due to area rule you are bound to miss quite a few lucky persons even inside the killzone. If it's not an airburst the fragments will probably be affected by the sheer number of bodies it has to penetrate, though I wouldn't count on it. If it's not an airburst though, I think a lot of the fragments will be dispersed in an upside down cone shape so you will miss a lot of people.

>>33093549
Oops, my mistake. But my point still stands : you don't burn the house down for a couple of cockroaches. You poison them with gas, or in their case WP. 20 thermobarics would just be overkill.

Then again, there's no kill like overkill. You know what, OP? Here are two answers : a few mortar rounds of WP or a salvo of thermobaric rockets will do the trick, with results varying from burning japs to levelled Comiket. The choice is yours.

>>
>>33088495
Frags, yes. Blast pressure, no. You'll see a reduction in the area of primary frag casualties but no change in the OP(over pressure) radius. the degree of reduction will depend on the average shape/size of the frags. A smaller grenade/shell with a fragmenting liner will be more effected than say a shaped antipersonnel mine.

>>33091624
WP= white phosphorous, a type of incendiary. imho probs wouldnt work better in the end unless you really got some nice coverage with it.

>>33091386
It does. sometimes is seen with suicide bombers who use vests in a crowded area.
